@@GIOBOZZ The difference between Finnish nationalism and US nationalism is in the expression. You folk are a lot more vocal about it, to the rate that when foreigner stays in US for a while it feels a bit aggressive even, like getting rubbed in face with it - lol. Lived there for a while so yea I know. From flags all over place to the way folk just generally speak and how amazing many declared the nation. We have a saying in Finland that pride becomes before fall - and it warns about not getting too arrogant, and that is kinda telling about our way to behave in certain things. We don't vocalize the things we are proud about that much, but it's there absolutely. You would see grown men cry during the ceremonies of Veteran's day or equivalent. And some of these songs get me literally feeling cold shivers through and to tear up - I am a Finn, born and raised there, but I live in France cause my husband is French. Idk if I linked you before these war-era songs - that are more 'propaganda' - just to balance things out a bit. Some folk may not think of them as politically very correct these days, but when you are fighting an enemy - well you know. I'll leave few links here. Kremlin's Dream (Anti communist). kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3urpouQYrSLmqc (Oldest version of Njet Molotof - the propaganda film - turn on subtitles.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZqrd6GVi9mjo6c Between the eyes. (Shooting between the eyes the Russians). kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppayp419qM2hpJo And then - I suppose some folk used the Njet Molotof to troll the Russian trolls after Finland started the progress to join NATO, maybe bored due the comments on related videos. I think I found the song video by clicking on a link of it that from those comments - and that made the song a bit political again, and had Ukrainians notice it - so they made their own version. And here I link you also a kind of mixed version, which someone put together combining the Finnish one and the one from Ukraine. Oh well, and full version from Ukraine as last one too. Anyhow, you need subtitles again, all though they work better on the last one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2jcZ6l6pZ6ClZY kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJjFq2iifpJ_Zrc

This song doesn't want you to go battle. It wants you to take care of the veterans "take care (of the veterans), soon all the brothers are gone" and also never forget the sacrifice they made "tell to the grandkids with songs, memories should never fade". That's because veterans should be respected but also they don't want history to repeat itself.

As far as I can tell from my narrow point of view, for Americans Veterans are something different. We all have a grandpa who fought for our literall independence. And here we all know why 31.12 firework sounds brings back the absolute hell they lived throught. Someone from USA can't relate.

Those lines can also be taken as take care of the nation as soon all of them will be gone. Not taking care of the nation would be disrespectfull to the legacy of our veterans. As they said "Heille kallis on maa"

I have lived outside Finland all my adult life though being born in Finland of Finnish parents. I heard this song for the first time at my mother's memorial service 2007. She was greek orthodox and a couple of singers from that tradition were hired for the funeral service since the rest of us did not know enough to participate in the singing. At the memorial service one of the singers, after having found out that my father was a war veteran, asked if he could perform this song. He had this deep beautiful voice and the performance was powerful. I can never forget the way my father's face lit up and how he rose up, to shake hands with the singer, to thank for the courtesy. I cried then, and every time I hear this song played again.

This song makes me miss my grandfather so bad, I basically cry every time I hear it. He passed away years ago. It's not about going to war. It's the veterans asking us not to forget them. They are the ones that marched together once, when the world was on fire. Soon there will be none left. Down to the shore of a dim bay The sun has set from its path Sound of the evening call rings out Burden's been laid down to rest Then should you remember your father His step has grown tired Children and our grandchildren Now it is your turn Care for them, soon the brothers will be gone Remember them, to them this land is dear Spread the word to your grandchildren in song Never must their memories fade away Hymn echoes quietly in the crypt Darkly sounding its longing Time has harvested its crops Where the fields were tilled Once we marched side by side With the sky and the earth on fire From the shores of the bay of Ääninen To whom can the stories be told? Care for them, soon the brothers will be gone Remember them, to them this land is dear Spread the word to your grandchildren in song Never must their memories fade away The might of the waves of Ladoga Can be chained by no one Its shores once guarded by brothers Soon a new morning will dawn Proudly the tribes of Karelia Have borne and carried their pain Mother Earth's embrace now protects them As the last sentinel is now gone Care for them, soon the brothers will be gone Remember them, to them this land is dear Spread the word to your grandchildren in song Never must their memories fade away Shepherd of Earth and Heaven Is our safety, our shield Greatest of all is His mercy Great and unfathomable The Sun, the Moon and the stars Hills and the blossoming earth All is under His good grace And none shall be lost Once again, sing for the glory of Lord Behold, how beautiful is this land Give thanks, for Lord will carry us Even when the last bells shall toll Touch the Lord with your gaze When things seem to be dark Your mercy in dawn and in dusk Will be irreplaceable to us Quietly we travel the path Among the shadowy earth Far above with our Lord Can I gaze upon your face Once again, sing for the glory of Lord Behold, how beautiful is this land Give thanks, for Lord will carry us Even when the last bells shall toll

There is the feeling of dignity and well-deserved pride in the singing of these veterans, who gave their own personal sacrifices and efforts to preserve Finland for their offspring. They tell us younger generations to remember, and to tell onwards what it took for each one of them to give their everything for our country, and a request to take care of them for their remaining days. - We will certainly do it with our great debt of gratitude!

like many things, Americans are loudly patriotic. They'll tell to anyone who wants to hear (and don't want to hear) that USA is the best country in the world, nothing can beat the USA etc etc. Meanwhile finns are quietly patriotic. We'll joke about our country, we like to complain how everything is shit here, but we'd fight to the death to keep our country. Finland may not be the perfect country, but it's perfect for us finns.

Those men are the ones who fought 1939-1945 for Finlands independence. Video is 12 years old. Amount of living veterans is about 3500 today and they are +- 100 years old. So there will not be them left long anymore. So we need to take care of them and keep their memory alive. You are young american so I wont judge you, but if a finnish youngster would speak about "grown ass men" in this place I'd let them know about respect.

This is about remembering them giving their lives for our existence and how they are passing this duty for the younger generations (while young take care of them now own). There is rarely any praising, battle glory or triumph in Finnish patriotic songs. It's mostly pain that lines with "Sisu", a stoic determination and tenacity of purpose.

Knowing what they sing is what makes it more powerful, literally first chorus by "main" singer: -Aurinko laskenut o-on *Sun has settled -Kutsu jo soi iltahuudon *The order/call is already called of the night -Taakka jo laskettu on *Weight has put down already -Tahtoa muista sä silloin *Will(power) you will remember so -Askel jo uupunut o-on *Step was exhausted already -Lapsemme ja lapsemme lapset *(our) children and their children -Teidän jo vuoronne on *its your turn now That's just first chorus. If someone disagrees in my translations, see comments.. And the choir chorus is "Remember those(who died) and remember brotherhood and remember how expensive our land is"

It is a tradition to sing this song at the funeral of veterans. My grandfather was a vet of the continuation war and in his funeral, the veteran's choir came to sing this song. That is how I got to know this song and that is why I will always remember it. To see the respect and love from his brothers-at-arms singing this song, to send his soul to the afterlife, was such a moving experience to me. I have done my time to serve in our defense forces, but this song reminded me of the purpose of all of it. Rest in peace, Jaakko-vaari (vaari is grandpa in some of Finnish dialects)...

Thank you heroes! 🫡 🇫🇮 Broud to be Finn 🇫🇮 The parents, grandparents or great-grandparents of all of us Finns fought in the winter war. The whole nation together, there were so few of us that everyone had to participate. Eventually even the children. "Isoviha" of the 18th century was not to be repeated. At that "Isoviha" time, the Russians killed a large part of the Finns and kidnapped more than 30,000 children who were never found. So in the winter war the Finns knew what will happen if the soviet union gets through. There were no options. And still isn't.

there is actually a version of this where a veteran sings with some new recruits in an army uniform that's the 2nd most beatiful version I've seen of this song, not to say that there would be a bad version of this, I kinda wish now that I recorded I my grandfather (who was a veteran himself, left to war on his 18th birthday) singing this at one of the last times I saw him, I have never thought him as much of a singer but damn the voice he dug out for that was just somethng else, Its been almost 15 years since that day and I still can't hear this song without tearing like crazy...

And to put in to consideration, the saddest thing about this, is that most of these singers (which there are like 1 thousand, less, more don't really know the correct number, but) most of them, have passed away. Since this was recorded 10 years ago, there are only a few Finnish veterans still alive, or any WW2 veteran for that matter. And those who are still alive were probably inlisted in the army when they were like 18 or 17 but they are still 90+ years old by now. Honestly, whenever you have a history lesson in school about war, or in any topic for that matter, just remember, these people did fight for you to be in that class, so never forget. 🫡

You should react to some finnish Iskelmä music, and Suomirock, or Suomipop... They are type of music that don't really exist anywhere else in the world.. Yes, rock and pop exist everywhere, but they are not the same thing really.. You will understand what I mean, when you hear some. They are really catchy songs too.. This type of music was all over the radio for like half a century... It embodies the finnish melancolic vide. There are thousands and thousands of artists, with even more thousands of songs of it. It has been strong here for a looooong time.

Technically (US) Americans could have avoided both the world wars, especially if they had been willing to ignore losing some distant overseas territories, but instead they participated in both. They did see terrible battles. Finland obviously had no choice but to fight, or become Soviet slaves, but the Americans had a choice not to, yet they still fought. It took them a while to get moving, but you can hardly blame them for that. At least I can respect that. I also really respect the fact the USA never declared a war on Finland, despite Stalin's whining. The UK did declare, for example. The Americans understood Finland had no choice but to seek help from wherever help was available, even if it was the horrible Nazi-Germany.

Winter and Continual war were expensive to Finland, but we made it! Even we had to pay to Soviet Union sotakorvaus( I don't know English term and if I remember right sum was over 3 000 000 sotakorvausdollaria). And those who escaped war from Carelia their new homes cost at least same! But like I said we payd all that and it took many years before it was paid! So now in future Russians know they don't change to lose war in Ukraine only damage what they blow up caused to using water is over 4 000 000 000 euros plus everything Else on top! And sorry bad English!

Ilta-huuto (literally evening call) regular translation in military terminology: evening muster. "song" is not a good translation indeed. Especially if you are touched by military one way or the other. The meaning of evening here may be seen as a reference to the evening of our veterans lifes perhaps.... so it is significant to understand the vibes in which this is ment to be understood.

Have you watched the unknown soldier? Hardly :D Watch and learn. The Yankees can never, ever have the same guts that the Finns have. We will pull to the end if necessary. Don't even mention Sweden in your words because they don't know what winter war is or protecting their own country. You learned and have learned here the everyday life of winter warfare. For Finns, war is not a joke or a threat. The Finns will stand in line if necessary, and you and NATO are not needed for that. The best country ever
