Today I am doing a Finnishpod101 review. They claim to be the most fun, easiest and best way to learn Finnish. I took a deep dive to figure out whether it was true.

I love Finnish Pod 101. It was my main resource for learning the language and I love that they focus on spoken Finnish and how you guys actually talk.

To add to that some things I coupled with your videos such as shortening numbers “yks, kaks etc.” or words “ma oon” I’d still recommend watching Finnish programs and listening to people speak but FP101 is a great base source.

Kiitos paljon Aleksi, this was very useful. I was tempted to sign up last year but didn't want to spend money on something I might not like. I'll give it a go.

Kiitos Aleksi. I signed up because of your review. My super Duolingo is expiring next week so I won't renew it. I'm looking forward to using this and your Teachable Speak Finnish like a Boss.

Kiitti Aleksi - very comprehensive, useful review. I’m almost finished with my Duolingo Plus course, so will try it afterwards. I appreciate you “cons” part of the review also, and also have to agree with one of the other comments about DL not always giving right answers. It was better when they had moderators to respond to questions and comments for good feedback, which they’ve discontinued now :(

back in 2016 i used finnishpod101, and it was horrible. For example the course was about teaching words since i was a newbie. the word of the day was "vesi", which means water and you can use vesi in this phrase, and the phrase was this:" suomalaisessa vesijohtovedessä on vaheman bacterejia kuin pulotetussa vedessä".I memorised it for fun. Of course now, today i know a bit more grammar and i understand what is going on.Hopefully things on that site have changed.

Lol that's bad indeed. Some of the modules are not that great but recently they've improved quite a bit. Worth trying the free trial at least.
@MalkWilliams
@MalkWilliams 2 жыл бұрын
I recognise that! Not that specific sentence, but the sample sentences were waaaay too advanced, and included (as here) compound words; unrecognisable cases (if you're just trying to memorise vesi, a sample sentence with vettä and no explanation is unhelpful!); and on occasion a completely different synonym that has no relation to the word you're learning at all!

I've used Thai Pod 101 and their Word of the Day also gives some complicated examples - and you have to deal with the Thai alphabet at the same time! Thai Pod 101 did a great job of teaching the language's alphabet, however

I have also tried it before. Shortly, with some better account (not sure about the name of the level). It was alright, and you made a great point about it not having any structure. Compared to Varpu (which I discovered much later) who builds lessons and sense into learning, that was a big setback for me. Somehow, I couldn't use it successfully by myself. It got confusing and demotivating. Another thing I like (and dislike) is the Word of the day feature. It is great cause it gives you daily vocab, but who the heck made those examples? They were veeery tricky, for me as a beginner. I do think they have made some changes now, but I have as well slightly lost my interest and motivation since. But I am in Finland now, so I might even give it another go. Thank you for this review! Great video overall! :)

I used to do the premium, yes, studied from the website. But then, something came up with works and things, and didn’t visit the website until my premium subscription was finished. What a sound-like-a-good excuse that was! But yes I am still getting daily vocabulary from the website. Remembered some, cannot remember some. But sure I will follow up the website again. Thanks for reminding the available sections they provide.

Yritin, mutta tällä on sama ongelma kuin Duolingolla: Ei kielioppia! Ei sääntöjä, jotka saavat sinut hulluksi (illatiivi, lokatiivi), mutta hyödyllisiä. Opin "Suomen Masterin" kanssa ja se on paljon tehokkaampaa, eikö? Luulen että hyvä kielen ylläpitämiseen, mutta ei oppimiseen. Se ei ole 101.

Hei Aleksi! I have been using this app for 7 days now, and while the experience was great, the free trial ended and most of the lessons are now blocked (only 3 out of like 50 lessons at the Beginner level are available for free, for example). I have wrote a review on the app store and the developers responded, quote: "While we do offer some paid options, your Free Lifetime Account gives you access to all the newest Audio and Video lessons for life." Which is a lie considering what I've described before. If they are OK with lying to their customers like this, then I personally wouldn't trust them. Thanks for reading, I hope this gave some insight.

Moi. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. The free version has only 3 lessons of each module available. I explained this at beginning of the pricing section. They add weekly new lessons that are available in the free plan as well. If you want to continue with the access to all lessons, consider the Basic or Premium subscription. You can find a discount code from description.

This looks really useful. Kiitos, Aleksi!😁 (although, I'm still a bit freaked out by the differences in spoken & written Finnish😥. . .and my pronunciation is, let's just say, not great). Practice, practice, practice!!!

I seen Podcast 101 before. Maybe, I would try it in the future. It does seem a bit pricey. For now, I use Duolingo, KZbin and other sources to learn Russian and Swedish. However, I tell my friends that use Duolingo to double check translations because they are not always right. More than a few time, I was like that is not right. For Example, Duolingo: Каки ты языки знаешь? "What languages do you speak?" But this is wrong. This says, "What languages do you know?" This says, "What languages do you speak?" Каки ты языки говрою?

In Russian we usually say «какие языки ты знаешь?». «На каких языках ты говоришь?» sounds a little bit odd, it kinda implies that you have more than one mother language. There is also a formal way of asking «какими языками вы владеете» - «what languages do you possess?»

Great review bro! I tried premium plus before but the teacher responded quite slowly (in 1-2 days) and the comments are not adequate (maybe just simply point out the mistake, what words are better, and not much explanations). I also agree with Aleksi that the courses are a bit unorganized and not sure where to start with. But overall, it does help me all the basics, and I also love the cultural parts. Eventually I can exempt my basic Finnish course 1 in the university and go straight into course 2 😂

Would you make a video about your dating course? Or talk about it on Instagram? It seems like most people may not that you are creating a dating course, because you only emailed to people who signed up your other courses or on your mailing list.
