Ngl my biggest grievance with SS back in the day is why i love them now. They successfully blended nu metal with powerviolence, goregrind, black metal, and slam in a way, that at first seems disjointed and haphazard, but it’s actually carefully crafted to take you back to Iowa, adrenaline, and life is peachy but also still remind you of Darkthrone, Husker Dü, infest, Charles Bronson, cannibal corpse, and disgorge

@@a.pigeon I like those bands but even Suicide Silence recording the Cleansing live in the studio pretty raw and real bc of the performance still sounds more polished than what Im used to in extreme music. Check Brigada do Odio (1984) for something so raw you may not even enjoy it. They were the first actually extreme band in history of hardcore punk/metal (they came later than Discharge but were way more fast agressive and heavy) and they are from Brazil which was a very harsh, violent, scary and sad place to live in then.

People really don’t understand how divided core and metal was. Totally different islands and no bridge between. The people on each island were very tribalistic and despised the other camp. Not up in New England. I knew tons of kids listening to all kinds of bands.... from things like Dismember and Paradise Lost to early slam bands like Scattered Remnants and Suffocation. There were the At The Gates, In Flames, type fans. All the Relapse DM bands like Nile, Incantation, Dying Fetus, Soilent Green were quite popular. We also had the first incarnation of protodeathcore in full swing up here with bands like Barrit, Year of Our Lord, Fault, Shadows Fall, etc. By 1997 Relapse Records was extremely well connected to the hardcore scene, with grindcore bands being the first bridge between metal and hardcore..... Nasum, Brutal Truth, Benumb, Flesh Parade, Exhumed, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Excruciating Terror, Cattle Decapitation, or bay area LEGENDS Phobia.. etc, etc, etc.... even moving into bands like The Locust and shit.... tons of hardcore kids were listening to these bands pretty regularly. Labels like Earache and Century Media had been dabbling in hardcore and metalcore bands already.... Coalesce started off on Earache..... Century Media signed Turmoil pretty early in the 1990s as well.

Being from Europe, Belgium had some really great crossover-stuff in the mid- to late-90s. I saw Crawlspace play at Goodlife Fest and it was the most violent pit ever, as combining tough guy with death metal brought out the worst in people ;-). Friends of mine were doing Darkdayrising in the Netherlands and did trash, black and death metal with breakdowns. Whenever they played a typical metal show, the metalhead boomers often refused to move, "because they don't have long hair", while the HC scene was way more open to the mix of styles. Their song "Enemy" is killer and "Written in Blood" has riffs for days! Their discography holds up to this day. As Finn would say "10 out of 10!"

Eventually it shifted towards the modern version that began the incorporation of Technical Death Metal over the Brutal sound. One of my favorite examples of modern Deathcore is: Perceptions by What's Left Of Her and Monolith by Substructure. Two bands that never got to peak, but killed it with only one release.

Can confirm, If your flat brim hat was not turned at a very slight to borderline extreme angle, with all the stickers still on it, you were not cool. Also this to me was when everybody started blurring everything heavy together under an umbrella as “Screamo” music. Like legit, anything and everything even remotely heavy, ESPECIALLY from the outside perspective of non-fans/ listeners of hardcore and metal, was “Screamo music”. Deathcore to me was like touted as the new kid on the block bully, coming to destroy everything before it as the Most Brutal and Intense genre, while still having somewhat mainstream success. It scratched an itch, and it still scratches said itch.

Thanks for turning me on to Embodyment, Finn. That was indeed crunchy and groovy af. Would've been super stoked on them back in the day. Definitely sounds ahead of its time. I'm not the biggest deathcore fan, but, as a big death metal and hardcore fan, some bands/songs really hit the spot for me in a way that more traditional death metal and hardcore doesn't.

The intro to this killed me dead. Never realised Despised Icon got so much flack, the singer once said some nice things about one of my stupid bands so I'll always have a soft spot for them. OG death core is cool but I vibe way more with the newer stuff. I really like the bands that do the slow discordant breakdowns with creepy atmospheres.

Bands like Whitechapel, All Shall Perish, As Blood Runs Black, Suicide Silence, The Black Dahlia Murder, Animosity, Knights of the Abyss, etc, was a huge influence on me back when I was 16. I’m 33 now and listening to some of those seminal records from that 03-07 era still hits just as hard as it did back then.

All Shall Perish arguably started it all, and their album The Price of Existence was waaaaay too good for its time. Job For A Cowboy released the DOOM EP in 2005 and it fucking dominated my high school listening, I can't believe there was no mention of JFAC! Thy Art Is Murder, The Acacia Strain, and Fit For an Autopsy started out in that era as well, and those bands are aging like fine wine, growing the complexity of their songwriting and musicianship without compromising their sound. They're fucking killing it right now.

Yo. These are some absolutely SOLID picks. Excellent list indeed! As for your point at 13:00, I completely agree there does seem to be quite a bit of contest vs content, BUT it's still an absolute blast when you hear something stankface filthy. While deathcore is not what it used to be, I still believe it's in its prime.

Despised Icon was the only deathcore band I was really into back then. I went and saw them open for Job for a Cowboy and left after them. The venues AC was broken and it was a sauna. Along with those 2 it was Terror and A Life Once Lost. I dont remember people hating on them but I'll take your word for it. They are still my fav deathcore band to this day.
