Wyrm is just the Old English spelling of Worm. So when you call a dragon a "wyrm", you are really calling it a "worm", just using the old spelling. This is used to be the common term used instead of dragon. Why have a specialized word when we you could just call it a worm with wings?

I’m so enjoying the idea of this, plus looking into a long term for the “Spanverse”. With Finspan looking to be only marine species, a freshwater species expansion is totally possible. Not to mention with the possibility of Wingspan expansions for African birds and South American birds. May lots of success come from this game and many more to come

I went scoober diving at Thailand about 2.5 years ago and thought that hey, it would be easy to make a fish version of a game like wingspan where you dive down instead of going across and the fish cards can only go in certain depth. You can imagine my surprise this morning when these exact same mechanisms actually materialises out of a stonemaier game.

Generally, you can think of game developers like web developers compared to web designers. Web designers can come up with some really cool ideas, though sometimes they're impractical or poorly explained. It's up to the developer to see if they can actually be done with manufacturing costs, refining code logic/rulebooks, and actually getting the product/game out of the door.

Well said! The way I explain it is that designers create the game, while a developer helps to make the game even more fun, functional, balanced, and intuitive. I serve as a developer for all Stonemaier Games, and sometimes others (like Elizabeth Hargrave in this case) contribute as well.

I'm not a big Wingspan guy personally. But I've been interested in Wyrmspan and now this to see if they change the formula up enough to appeal to me. I haven't played Wyrmspan yet, but a family member recently got it so I'll give that a go first. If that doesn't work out, maybe this will?

Looks good and I'm sure this is a great game as with Wingspan and Wyrmspan. But curious to hear about the decision to release this before all the Wingspan expansions come out and so quickly after Wyrmspan. Just as a personal example, when Wyrmspan came out and I played it, I pretty much lost interest to play Wingspan again and most likely won't be buying any subsequent expansions unless they really knock it out of the park (and will probably sell my copy of Wingspan in the near future). Now I've been eagerly anticipating a Wyrmspan expansion and another new entry to the series is releasing before that, which means I'm also highly unlikely to purchase this - whereas I may have if releases were spaced out a bit more. Do you have any thoughts you'd be okay sharing with the decision process for releasing titles that could essentially a) cannibalize other games in the same line and/or b) potentially result on consumer fatigue? Is this less of a concern because these games are designed for different audiences and so the expectation is that many/most Wingspan lovers don't buy this product anyways? I know you have a lot going on right now so I wouldn't expect a reply to this, but it would be cool to hear your insights and opinions on this sort of thing because from my perspective we are increasingly seeing publishers put out multiple standalone games in the same universe, and often in quick succession when also still actively releasing expansions to the original game (e.g., Everdell, Dune Imperium, Clank!, Terra Mystica, Terraforming Mars, etc.).

It's a real fish that can leap out of the water and glide to evade predators - the sailfin flying fish :)

I’m not sure the vertical board is going to be very table/user-friendly. Depends on the final dimensions I guess. I do like the discard pile idea, and the diving. Seems like it’ll be different enough from Wing and Wyrmspan to be worth a play!

I have a different idea too. PokeSpan! Pokemon x Wingspan will be gorgeous! Almost the same mechanics as Wingspan but with triple battles. The 4 actions will be replaced by 5: 1. Summon/Evolve 2. Top Attackers/Defenders 3. Middle Attackers/Defenders 4. Bottom Attackers/Defenders 5. Catch a Pokemon
