The thing that gets me about this performance every time is how she can embody this song when she didn’t write it herself. I recall hearing Elvis Costello saying (or maybe I read it in an interview?) that her performance scared him 😂

Thank you for this reaction. Usually I watch reactions to enjoy someone else having a first experience with a performance I already know I love, but sometimes I’m in for a real treat and find a new favorite I’ve never heard. Very familiar with Fiona’s work, but had never seen this performance or heard the Elvis Costello original. Now I have all versions on repeat. Surprised there aren’t more reactions out there to this gem. Thank you!

The sad fact is, if she hadn't gone out on the MTV music awards and called out the industry, she would have been one of the biggest artists of all time. Personally I feel grateful she was able to stay free and "underground" (huge quotes there). She just kept putting out album after album of raw unfiltered genius. And I can't help but think that if she had maintained the level of fame she hit in the early 90's, that we would have gotten a lot more "radio friendly" influence. But who cares what I think lol. She is brilliant and you need to listen to waaay more of her MP :)

YES!!!!! I have long held this is as a shining example of an artist making a song their own by channeling... something inside them. I love Elvis Costello's version (funny to say his version when it's his song - but it is now Ms Apple's, imo). It bothers me when I watch the performance, I feel if the audience had any sense, they would have just stayed silent for a minute to reflect upon what they just experienced.

for some of her original work you should listen to something from her newest album, "fetch the bolt cutters" she takes long hiatuses between each album (8 years for fetch) and i think shes great for that. she takes her time with each album, she doesnt want to release album after album, she wants to release THE album that sits right with HER. you can feel that when you listen to her stuff.

One of the great Elvis Costello songs. The lyrics are as good as it gets. Fiona takes Elvis' album performance and takes it to a different level. "It's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing . It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing "I want to know the things you did that we do too, I want you I want to hear she pleases you more than I do, I want you Elvis is on guitar with a few of his original bandmates. You should review some Elvis Costello and the Attractions songs. for about 5 years in between 1978-1983 they were the best band on planet earth.
@user53623 ай бұрын
My guy... to add some context here a large part of what gobsmacked you in this reaction was the sheer, underrated genius of Fiona Apple. She's such an under-appreciated and timeless talent. What you saw here was a good representation of what she's all about in that she BLEEDS every one of her songs. Everything she does is so pure, raw and filled with emotion. If what you said at the beginning is true (that you haven't heard much by her before) you're in for a treat. She is a comparable to the likes of Billie Holiday and really is a once in a generation talent. She's an absolute poet, a musical prodigy and has an stunning voice and vocal range. I highly recommend starting with "Never is a Promise" which is a song she wrote when she was 15, and "I know" Live at Lago. They both give you a glimpse at the voice, the lyrics and the song-writing. It's a deep rabbit hole, but one very much worth going down. You'll be stunned you didn't pick up on her sooner.

***a stunning, artistic, emotionally raw, improvisational tour de force, rarely (if ever) equalled*** Note at the very end how Costello keeps watching Fiona, softly playing, vainly attempting to coax her into singing that final "I Want You." And... no matter how many times you watch this, she's not going to do it! Fiona's refusal comes as the result of her gut-wrenching performance that finally enables her to exorcise the angry obsession she's had with a lover who cheated. Fiona stands defiantly -- staring straight ahead --she no longer wants him. And though the song has no resolution (all the band can do is play the final chord) Fiona Apple, herself, most certainly finds resolution! And yeah, I know Fiona was only singing Elvis' lyrics, but no one will able to convince me that she hasn't lived that pain at some point in her life.

So... Elvis Costello is brilliant, and well worth acknowledging for this as well as his many other songs. Fiona Apple is brilliant in her own right, and well worth exploring for her own work. This particular performance is absolutely exceptional in every way. It's better than many of either Costello's or Apple's songs and performances, not because of anything else they each did being inferior in any way, but because this was a "lightening in a bottle" moment of synergy that cannot be replicated. I've seen some other bits and pieces of their collaboration, and it was obvious they held each other in very high regard. And yes, Michael's probably heard both Fiona and Elvis before at some point, but not figuring that out on the spot isn't a mortal sin.
5 ай бұрын
Not seen this before but Costello wrote this and it's no surprise. He is an exceptional songwriter. words and music...and Michael, if you are not very familiar with him, go back to his first album My Aim Is True and look at Alison therefrom. It's genius. And Red Shoes is a great guitar pop song contrasting with the height of the simplicity of the Sex Pistols et al in England when the radio might have Alison or Red Shoes follow Pretty Vacant When he worked with McCartney, Paul said to him perhaps don't feel the need to use so many chords...each to their own methinks... Fiona Apple's interpretation of I Want you is truly amazing but think of Joe Cocker and A Little Help From My Friends to measure it against. To be great, singing artists must be great interpreters as well s singers of their own words.

I’ve seen Fiona live a few times, so I get it, but I’m ready to go do a deep dive into Elvis Costello (I’ve never really paid attention to him before despite having seen him twice live)and am perplexed as to how his incredible performance was almost totally overlooked. This is a great version of this song. Fiona Apple really leans into the pain of the song. But it is an Elvis Costello song. When he does it live he leans into the anger. Michael, you need to review this live Elvis Costello version as a comparison. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2fTnIpoaNujga8 It's actually a guitar masterclass. A masterclass in how to use a guitar to evoke emotion. In this case, the emotion of raw anger. It's totally unconventional playing with the emotion at the center. It's maybe the angriest guitar song ever performed live. You have to see it and watch all the way to the end. You're a guitar guy, I'd be really interested to hear your take. Fiona is great but Elvis is King.
