Thank you! Nothing calms me more than the suffering of other students

Great documentary of the frustration of learning to waterstart. So many vids of how to do it... all seemingly effortlessly. Seeing videos of others struggling and succeeding are more helpful. I found myself saying... "I do that... that too." Way to go Fiona!

this is a good instruction on what can go wrong. I actually learned something. every other instructional videos make it looks so easy.

what makes this so painful to watch are 2 things: she begins the exercise, which isn't a waterstart but a deep beach start with the board turned into the wind and the instructor doesn't correct this, he actually does quite the opposite by putting the board into the wind for each new attempt. Its impossible to launch from this starting position. Have the board on half wind course and Bob's your uncle. You can see this clearly on the near successes earlier in the vid when the board is upwind. It is probably the easiest to learn this on a downwind course. Having the wind coming directly onshore like it did in the vid is less than ideal to learn to beach start. In a waterstart onshore wind doesn't matter since you turn your board to halfwind or downwind course before launch for best lift anyway. Secondly I would have made her control the board with the sail alone standing in knee deep water until boom hand and sail hand actions become more ingrained so that the board doesn't go uncontrolled windward or leeward. She succeeded in the end and that's all that matters. Well done and thumbs up!

haha! THANKS, Fiona, and Jeff. have to agree whole-heartedly with whitecap below: the instructional videos are nice. but at about 2 minutes long each, that's about the duration of my patience when trying at the lake before I just decide to quit, uphaul, and go. seeing this 'entertaining' process and the common struggle of it all is of immeasurable help! : )

Well, it is actually a water start - in shallow water. A beach start to me means stepping onto the board and sailing away. A water start means that you are lying in the water and using the sail to lift you up and into a sailing position. The next stage is a deep water start where you need to organise the board and sail out without the help of being able to stand. It is all good fun!

Nice video!. I´m learning waterstart too, but I dindn´t get it in the last summer. I think I will get it because I´m seeing some mistakes in the video and I´ll try to avoid them. Congratulations Fiona!

Congrats to the wind. What a mission pulling those big puppies out. 😂. Too much wind in sail before footing.

Just the backfoot on the board,is easier,to bring the weight foreworth, while extending the front arm

Well, disputable. It's exactly waterstart learning. She has started not with one feet staying on the ground, but she was laying in water with both feets on board. So just a water start at shallow water :)
