Many years ago, in training, we dug down to bare mineral soil, and deployed the fire shelters. Brush was piled around us and they lit it on fire. There were charged lines in case anyone panicked. It was hot and smoky inside the shelter. There are small pinprick holes in the fire shelters and the "camera obscura" effect made it look like small flames were dancing on your fire gear. Really gave us confidence in the "Shake and Bake" fire shelters. I understand they don't do this anymore, which is too bad as it was a great confidence builder.

Great sorry about the inventor of the Pulaski tool. I have been in the fire service for 31 years, my father was a forest service firefighter for 34 year and I have never heard the story.

The pack test isn’t to standard. No running for a start, then the instructors encouraging them to race each other. Nothing like encouraging injury for nothing but worthless bragging rights. Firefighting is about teamwork, not trying to prove yourself better than the people working beside you.

Do you guys have branches all over the state? I will be an EMT in September and want to move out to Utah in the next few years; but I don't want to be confined to the SLC area for work.

Hi Carlos, we provide fire and emergency medical services to more than 400,000 residence in 15 municipalities in Salt Lake County and Eagle Mountain in Utah County. This is includes the communities that live in both Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon. So while we aren't statewide, we do have a lot of different areas to work in. The one exception to this would be our wildland team that does fight fires all over state and sometimes neighboring states. Hope that helps.
