Fire Ants vs. Maggots: What happens when a swarm of seething maggots take over a turkey carcass that a colony of fire ants (The Fire Nation) have been working on? Well, this is truly one of the grossest videos I've ever had to film on this channel, and as a scoleciphobe (fear of worms), there were points of screaming! I think our revulsion for creepy crawlies runs much deeper than just childhood. Millions of years of evolution have taught our ancestors to avoid things that indicate disease, filth, and decomposition, as they could be toxic or infectious.

At this point, there is a far longer evolutionary history of vertebrates being generally much larger than arthropods. Insectivorous reptiles and mammals would have a hard time if they were terrified of their own prey. Therefore, I think the human aversion to "creepy crawlies" comes from the far more recent (but still pretty long) evolutionary history of our primate ancestors being in danger from venomous spiders and insects, as well as illnesses associated with maggot-infested food sources

From watching many insect videos on KZbin I learned that the extreme zoom is what hugely decreases the grossness factor. Things like the surface of the turkey head start to look simply like some alien landscape. And the creatures themselves become individuals instead of an indistinct scuttering mass. You can clearly distinguish their heads, eyes, legs, antennae, the purpose of their movements... you begin to understand them. Normally we can't see any of that and it's just some unspecified wriggling. THAT's what grosses us out, I think. Idk, the maggot trying to poke its "head" out of the hole and going "nope, some pretty agressive guys (I mean, gals) up there"... was kinda cute tbh.

Congrats on your award! I have watched a lot of KZbin videos and yours are the best. Not only is good science discussed but it comes with an entertaining and heartwarming narrative. As a volunteer doing interp work in the dark lower levels of Spineless Marvels building of Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo, I can only hope to be half the storyteller that you are someday. My absolute favorite place at Basecamp is being between the Leafcutter and honeypot ant colonies and discussing how environment determines the unique adaptations of both species. I keep sitting through your videos and finding something that I thought I lost. When I was a kid, I loved playing with the ants outside and was scolded for holding them and playing with them. I was trained to only think of them as pests but I still cried when I had to exterminate them. Seeing your videos has made me want to make a new life for a lucky queen somewhere. In fact I really want to catch a carpenter queen but right now I don't have the room for a terrarium. Thank you. Also I like maggots and found this interesting. Thank you.

I'm like you. Watching animals or insects devour something doesn't gross me out (in fact, it can actually make me MORE hungry), but I'm not a fan of the smell of raw meat or decaying flesh. I'm also not bothered by spiders, centipedes, ants, bees/wasps or maggots, but cockroaches (and to a lesser extent, grasshoppers/locusts) trigger a primeval repulsion instinct in me. I don't think it's due to a childhood teaching moment like what happened to AntsCanada either; my parents always told me that cockroaches were unclean, but then why am I disgusted by grasshoppers as well? I think that it's instead due to some very primitive instinct in our brains from early evolutionary history that taught us that bugs/worms/parasites were bad, especially if they were ON/IN us, but it manifests itself slightly differently for every person.
