Fire at will is very useful for those going through the Gamma quadrant campaign, with the myriad of swarmers. Would be nice if they would fix it.

All I want is for fire-at-will to be on par with the other firing modes. Bring its global cooldown back to 15 seconds, and buff redirecting arrays to make it a more consistent extension. Not only is scatter volley a much more effective damage build, even on heavier cruisers, it's just annoying when all of your abilties have a cooldown of 15 seconds except ONE. Throws off my whole rotation. Also, the omni-beam thing always annoys me. Cannon builds can have literally all set pieces in every slot. Before I decided to run all standard phasers (and whatever set pieces look like them), my Inquiry had all set phasers in front and back, and it was insanely powerful. It still is with standard [pen] phasers, but you know what I mean. 4/4 cuisers like the Odyssey have to use at least one standard beam array in the back, forcing a broadside build. Unfortunately, many of the beam set pieces are omni-beams, so you have to pick one. I'm lucky that there's a wide-angle quantum torpedo to use, because it fits my standard theme build perfectly.

i get creative with my FAW. I just use lock trajectory 3 with a ton of dual banks, fly past them at high speed, and keep them in my furing arc with spinning. is it efficient? no. is it fun? absolutely. does it make my captain look like he's completely nuts? that's the idea.

FAW also needs linking to any torps spotted. As torps wont fire without a valid target in its arc. Telling your tac officer to push the "BUTTON", yet no torps. So we still end up frantically clicking and tab targeting to try and get a shot off. When it comes to broadsiding. The physical model and weapon hardpoints seem to make a big difference too. On quite a few ships, a 250 arc should be easy, with lots of overlap. However, many times, what looks fine to me is not for the game. I have tried this in PVP against a sitting target. The sweet spot for everything to fire varies a lot between ships. It would not surprise me to find out the Narrow-band Phasers are just a modified omni template behind the scenes. The restricted arc and the limit of two suggests this.

I agree, the single character unlock aspect of lockbox and promo ships has always been my biggest frustration with them. Cryptic's solution to that was Mudd's market, and well, we've seen how most people feel about that.

Mudds can be useful but some ships added are very underwhelming the traits can be good but they are usually junk only a few packs are viable, the xindi definitely needs added to a mudds pack though it should never have been placed in the lobi store

Yep. The single character unlocks are why my most played ship is my Lexington, just due to having 16 characters. If there is a Mudd's Market Promo ship I will sometimes get that, like the S31 Heavy Command Dreadnought or the Anniversary packs for stuff like the Styx. Other than Mudd, I don't see any reason to spend money. I really wish I could get my Valkis on all my Romulans. It's not as good as the Lexington IMO, but it's beautiful, I like having races match ships just for RP reasons, and Romulans really don't have that many good ships.

Why not allow scatter volley and FAW to apply to all energy weapons. Then drop the faw shared cooldown to 15 sec, but slightly reduce the damage bonus?

Yeah, that's a whole other thing. Problem there is I don't have any ideas on how to fix it. Single Cannons just suck.

Could not find an STO video more relevant to my current playstyle; thank you so much for taking the time to make it and I hope Cryptic listens to you. Because of the Lexington being an account unlock, most of my characters are using it. I'm currently using 3 DBBs and Disco Torp up front, and 2 Omnis, a turret, and the Kinetic on the back. Even though I'm forward facing, I use ETM and Supercharged Weapons traits with FAW3 / TS1, just because in Advanced Content killing multiple enemies at once is faster than individual targeting. In Elite content though, BO works better. I too really hope they make FAW better. Heck, if the Tucker Class trait could extend to the CD of FAW that'd make me happy even with it's getting hit requirement.

I FIXED IT! Starship trait - Omnipresent Broadside While this trait is slotted, activation of any Beam: Fire at Will ability upgrades the fire mode to the max rank and grants a single torpedoes slotted in the aft of the ship the ability to fire a torpedo firing mode in a 360 degree ark. Now if we can only make it a real thing :(

in terms of broadside, I def wouldn't mind a zen store ship that has a console that flips your range cone around 90 degrees (aft becomes left and fore becomes right) letting you use any weapon in a broadside build so long as they are on a ship with the console hell could even make the ship's design itself be similar to something from the age of sail alternatively, have had this idea a while back of a bortasqu variant that has side cannons mounted to the hull that effectively turn battles into the battle of coruscant from revenge of the sith, though thats cannons not beams so would only add an alternative broadside option rather than solve the issues of the current

What gets me is the energy weapons are all backwards. The cannons should be more suited to single target burst yet the meta is CSV. When do you ever see a cannon based ship spraying and praying in the shows? Likewise, beam arrays have always been shown hitting multiple targets, yet beam overload/surgical strikes is the way to go with them. It's obviously too late for the devs to do anything about it now, but I wish it was more lore accurate.

My idea - Beam Overlord - you can equip an addition omnibeam. When you have three omni beams the cooldown is reduced by 3 seconds and hits from the beam will extend the duration of fire at will for .5 seconds upto 3 sec. It puts opptimization behind a difficult but not impossible effort step to get. Special Console; Weapon refractor - Allows special weapons to have a wider firing arc (Like the Galx dreadnaught). When it is used it reduces the cooldown of your next fire at will by 2 seconds and all beam weapons for the next sycle are treated as omnidirectional.

8 turrets with CRF III is NO joke. Had that on my Jem Hadar dreadnought. VAPORIZED anything light cruiser or smaller...

Excellent vid, Stu! I agree with all of this. I have switched over to mostly FAW Broadside builds and i enjoy it alot more, especially on my Neo Connie, Galaxy Razer, Sagan and L-Excelsior.

Hard not to do broadsides, when flying the more lethargic builds, like the Galaxy-X. Between the turn rates and inertia, it's hard to keep that nose on the enemy.

@@nunya3163 hard yes, but not impossible. Using the ship's inertia to powerslide into forward firing arc is how i've done it on the Gal-X when i ran BO on it.

@@PirateScumGaming Yeah, I am just not great a pilot, and get frustrated as I continue to drift out of range. I did notice that the set from the latest event help a lot, but the loss in durability was too much, when compared to the Disco set that I am running.

YES!! Reengineering Some of the torpedoes would be nice for the ARC mod & Narrow Angle beams would be great for Broadside builds. For sure.

100 percent agree I have a faw world razer build and it does alright in advanced content but could be a lot better and it still isn't as good as other firing modes available. Please post this on whatever communication will reach the devs so this could be looked into!!

Great video, Omnis should be allowed to be opened up like turrets I agree. I do like playing with cannon scatter volley 3 and fire at will 1 with two omnis in the back and a whole bunch of spiral wave disruptors in the front and fire at will needs a buff.

Just my thoughts. As a Tank, i prefer FaW3 alongside Ba'ul beams to compensate the 5-second-gap from Redirecting Arrays. If i get the Connie3 after the T6-2X Update, i would put the Trait on the new slot. Reducing FaW global cooldown to 15 seconds would help me to get 100% Uptime on that trait of the Connie3. This would constantly give me the 150% Thread-Generation out of the Connie3 Trait and grants more Uptime on FaW from Redirecting Arrays because of more Thread/Aggro. So i personally don't need a new Extender-Trait and will be fine with Redirecting Arrays. For the DPS-side i totally agree with you. ETM is nearly useless if you don't slot AND fire torpedoes. So broadsiding is no option with ETM. And ETM needs a lot awareness and timing with the FaW/TS flipflop. With Redirecting Arrays, you have to go slightliy in Off-tanking as u have to get shot by Foe. This may work in random advanced TFO's, but won't help you in Elite-content much if there is a "real" tank or hard-hitting DPS'ers outperforming you. So on this PoV, a real Externder like Whittering Barrage would do so much for the Player-base, if it is NOT put on single-character-unlocks. Please go for global cooldown reduction on FaW and put a real FaW-Extender on regular c-store ships. Make FaW great again.

For certain larger, slow turn rate ships, FAW should be built in targeting mode without it's current nerfing. It's not like multi-threat target acquisition doesn't already exist IRL. Heck, they could even code a special large ship beam array with multi-threat acquisition in mind. If possible, even code FAW nerfing to ship class. Of course your shuttles and scouts get nerfed the most. However, those big boys and heavies would get the sky burning FAW that ships of those classes would have been designed with in the first place.

They need to give us more options for rear omnis, the cryo for example, its another unique but counts as a set(which it is but so is cutting). But damage isnt all that either

So far I haven't noticed anything that contradicts what we saw before, only adding to the lore in areas that weren't yet filled in. So long as they continue to not contradict anything, I'm cool with additions.

I wanted to make absolutely sure for myself as to which Wide Angle Torps there are, and here's what I found: - Prolonged Engagement Photon Torp from Phoenix Store/Event Reclaim - Wide Angle Quantum Torp from any T6 Variant of the Sovereign - Wide Angle Inhibiting Chroniton Torp from Gamma Rep - Spatial Torpedo (22c.) from the Lobi Store - Kentari Missile Launcher from the Episode "Mirrors and Smoke" in "New Frontiers" - Rapid Fire Missile Launcher from the Lobi Store And, as mentioned by Stu, the dicontinued: - Wide Angle Voth Transphasic Chroniton Torp from the Bulwark Dreadnought Cruiser (discontinued) MUCH to my surprise, I found out that this one ALSO has 180° firing arc: - Heavy Digitizer Plasma Torp from the Episode "The Fujiwhara Effect" That's a total of 7 (currently available) Wide Angle torpedo-type weapons. Let's face it tho, only a few of them are actually useful for proper DPS builds.

I'm glad it's a little weak. Definitely don't miss the trash meta of FaW being the only firing mode. Since the game revolves around killing swarms, it's fitting that it's the most reliable to use but weak. My only problem with it is that its recharge is too aggressively long even with traits. If you aren't using a torp with Entwined, you only have Redirecting Arrays, which effectively only works on tank/delta builds. And even then, it expires and needs a refresh immediately or you'll lose a cycle. I wish there was a firing mode for true Fire at Will for cannons so I could live my dream of making a ww2 flak battleship that's firing a cloud of bullets in every direction. Having a Fire at Will that behaved like Scatter Volley would also be nice, so you get more targets on a dual beam bank build.

Excelsior 2 trait is good with its console, along with surgical strikes. Using it on Lexington build does really well. I use 2 of the flagship consoles for haste, damage. I just use faw 3 and scatter volley, lots of haste and it is a very colourful time firing torp spreads every 6-10 seconds. The omni restriction is silly

I'd like to see Cryptic make FaW a more unique ability, rather than trying to make it a weaker multi-target flavor of BO. My suggestion would be this: 1) Lower duration to 5 seconds. 2) Keep cooldown at 20 seconds. 3) Increase rate of fire by 500% while lowering weapon power use by 90%. 4) Give all beam weapons a 360 degree arc during the firing mode, even dual beam banks. 5) Remove the target cap, damage debuff, and accuracy penalty. If it's in range, it gets shot. 6) Disable weapons subsystem for 5 seconds after it finishes. Gotta let them emitters cool a bit after that. Obviously the exact numbers can be changed, but something like this would be cool. This would make it function more like a massive burst of damage that takes a long time to cooldown, rather than a sustained firing mode. Combining this with a high range grav well, which ships like the Odyssey (and its saucer pet!!!) and Science Vessels are likely to be packing anyway, would allow you to lock down a bunch of targets in range before hitting FaW for a short burst of massive damage. Essentially you hit FAW and delete everything within 10km...but if anything survives you can't immediately return fire. It's the "FIRE EVERYTHING!" moment from the movies, in a button. That would be so much cooler than simply making a beam clone of CSV.

Entwined Tactical Matrices is never going to stop you from activating an energy weapon firing mode upgrade. The only thing ETM would ever stop you from doing is activating a torpedo firing mode upgrade if you haven't fired off the "free" one ETM gave you with your CSV or FAW. If you use Torpedo Spread to get a free FAW I, and then, without firing off the upgraded torpedo before activating your "real" FAW you just won't get your free Torpedo Spread I.

I played a lot of the Starfleet Command games as a kid, one thing that would absolutely help broadside builds was implemented on those 1990s games and its non-existence in STO shocked me when I started. Broadside weapons mounts! Whoever designed the spaceframe layout seems to have forgotten that that was an option. If they were going to have a single firing mode that was FTP friendly it really should be Fire at Will, not Cannon Scatter Volley. FAW feels like you are a Starfleet captain flying into a swarm of enemy ships blasting away at targets of opportunity with their Phaser Arrays, CSV feels like you are too lazy to aim.

My backseat driver hot take...Seems like the game design put so much emphasis into turn rates and flanking that broadside and omni beams and fire at will seem to mitigate...and you see some of the most fun builds kind of just being stat nerfed by the game dev. They specifically had to go in and add the CD nerf, and the damage nerf...on Omni's they had to specifically limit the number of them...instead of free to play in a literal sense, everything's every limiting and pigeon holing. I always give more credence to implemented choices by developers, when they go out of their way to do a thing, there's a reason they do it, so when you see it wishing for change is like betting against the tide. IDK, this comment about broadside weapon mounts being cannon in older games really stands out, thanks for the throw back.

@@woscanl For omni-beams they don't just limit number but which ones can be slotted together. The ONLY weapon type they do that with. Now they have a 2-per ship torpedo type (Maelstrom) apparently without that secondary restriction, they should change omni-beams to the same. And to think, if someone on the original team had remembered to implement broadside weapons arcs this whole issue would have never happened.

I fly engineer, T6X2 Gagarin, 8 Isomags +3 Bellum, DBBs +DiscTorp, FAW III + ETM + MAS I, ERL III for single... generally get 200k in wild Advanced, 350k+ in controlled test... *personally* I find that enough, but yeah, to solo Elite bosses I have to switch to something with SSIII or RRtW... I do like having to use a few ships for different roles for now, had been stuck for ages on the Leg Gal X. It is also ridiculous now with the extra console, for a classic phaser build anyway.

I'm working on a crazy pilot corvette build that will maximize combat speed, so it will be all turrets as I'll be moving way too fast to be using cannons :)

Try a niche setup I'm using Entwined with reroute reserves on the legendary jem'hadar mix of advanced phasers and the disco wide and and Lorca torp with lorcator, and Terran phaser beam, all watcher boffs, the borg cutting beam borg console, and either soliton wave impeller or the la sirens special weapon plus a fully built up phaser crafted omni, I am using imolating phaser, and valdore shield console. I'm surprised how vicious the ship is setup that way

Instead of damage maybe FAW should buff crit chance. Or maybe buff the chance for the weapons procs to hit. Maybe add some doffs that make it drain engine power or something

A crit chance buff isn't enough. FaW needs to be leveled to be equivalent to the other firing modes, and a big part of that is restoring its 15 second global cooldown and giving it a proper extension trait.

Just a question about your 5/3 layout with the KBB in the back. I know you said you wouldn't put a turret in the place of the KKB, but wouldn't a trilithium turret be better in that slot? For that extra chance for firing cycle haste?

KBB is a solid basic option is hits hard but not affected by firing modes. 2.5% chance to gain 5% weapon haste per firing cycle (not per shot) is a small buff compared to traits like Emergency Weapon Cycle that last 30 sec that can be up all the time. If you're FTP it will be hard to acquire weapon haste and theirs infinity weapon options if you have some EC/Keys. trilithium turret is ok but theirs better options.

It's only a 5% chance for that haste, which doesn't stack with the Trilthium omni. And even then, that only helps Phaser builds, there's no trilithium disruptor or plasma turret.

Hey Stu! I was wondering if the Vincent Kish Duty Officer that grants a 25% chance of upgrading a Fire at Will I to a Fire at Will II apply to the Entwined Tactical Matrices Fire at Will I? Of course that wouldn't solve the underlying issue but it might help a bit. I don't have the ETM trait so I can't test this theory... Thank you for the videos!

Yes, the Vincent Kish duty officer would have a chance to turn ETM's FaW I to FaW II. But as you said, the doff only has a chance to apply its effect, and it only bumps it up by one level so you're still not going to have FaW III consistently. This doff is something I often use on ships with limited Tactical seating, like the Buran or Parliament, but I don't think it would offer enough benefit to use on if you already have access to FaW III.

Once I learned how ETM actually worked, I stopped using it. The tooltip is unclear & as a result you have a bunch of people swearing it's the best thing since slice bread, when it's actually more of a hinderence. I agree with the rest of your vid too, FAW & beam arrays really do need a buff. And for the love of God let us run 3 omni beams at once !!!

What about using Experimental Power Redirection instead of entwined power matrixies along with plasma and complex plasma.?

Experimental Power Redirection can't replace Entwined Tactical Matrices. You'd have to get the cooldown to the point that you'd be able to keep the console up 100% of the time, which isn't possible. And Complex Plasma Fires would be good if this were a plasma build, but this is phaser.

So question. Wouldn't using SAD be considered a 3rd FAW build with the new hanger consoles??

No. SAD's only effect on your ship's weapons is the -30 Damage Res debuff. Firing modes applied to fighters are irrelevant to what I'm talking about in this video. And even if it weren't, SAD doesn't extend the duration of FaW or CSV on pets, only triggers it. And it's only the level 1 versions or in a way it'd still the same problem as ETM.

Does the Polar Turret from home count as an omni? If not then technically you could have 3 couldn't you? Not quite sure how that piece of gear works.

yes, the morphogenic polaron omni beam counts as a set omni. it just also works as a turret.

I wish FAW would not have that 50% damage reduction. I feel like removing that would be a good first step to a buff.

It's FaW 1 that has the drastic damage drop, and I think part of that was because of the Excelsior II console, but still, the fact that FaW is already underpowered compared to other modes and then has to put up with having to run the level one version just further hurts it.

I've got a bit of a laugh here.... In recent testing that I ve done for some reviews.... I accidentally ended up with one of my ships actually 50% High dps Then all of the other build With exception to Csv And even then the gap was 50k Dps If I recall correctly. And the biuld that was getting the highest amount of damage was FAW

What are the chances that people put FaW3 and Torp Spread3/2/1 on their spam bar with the Gagarin Trait ? Hehe. Hehe . Heh ... 😭🤷🤦 Oh well, at least I figured out (without a parser) that putting the Gagarin Trait on a CSV build really brought my damage down, so that Trait got booted from the CSV builds . The CSV extension Trait is good enough .

I prefer fire at will over cannons and overload because its more cinamatic and its just pretty to watch. Pls Cryptic buff it so it is actually on par with CSV and BO.

Even so, many of my characters wind up FAW builds, just because Elite is super tedious for what it offers as a reward, so I tend to go to Advanced, where FAW is preferable in most situations. Personally, I hate that firing modes are either or. It's a design decision I find irritating. DEW, SCI, Torp and Carrier should have been the primary methods of damage dealing, with various methods of delivering damage in each mode, but I digress. R&D is so criminally under utilized. There shouldn't be a piece of equipment that can't be reengineered to different damage types. Again, this was a design decision made long ago, when Cryptic decided it wasn't worth the effort to change the underlying mechanics to how damage types were attached to weapons. But hey, look at the bright side, now they can tie interesting weapons like narrow angle phasers to lock box ships or bundles, so they can try and entice more money from their players for a half way busted ass game. Bonus, it may or may not even work as intended when you buy it. See the 14th Anniversary bundle.

One of the devs threw the idea of craftable omnis being unrestricted. But if theyre gonna make an excuse of piloting ill raise the argument of the far point ships console, its a litteral afk gameplay console.

The huge damage discrepancy between FAW1 and FAW3 is probably due to the severe accuracy penalty. Not only are the shots weaker but they'll be doing 0 damage more frequently by failing to hit in the first place.

This is not true, FAW does not factor accuracy so the negative accuracy stat debuff is meaningless. NPC's barely have any defense, if at all, and your hit chance (acc/def) with FAW1 is still near 100% just as it is with FAW3. Accuracy overflow also does not apply, so no extra crith/d with any rank of FAW.

Yes FAW needs a buff but it can still pull over 1.3m np so for anything to do in STO it is fine but for trying to get the highest dps number for energy weapon then nope. I mean would be nice if they buff it and or add more AOE weapon modes for energy weapons since we only have 2 and 69 single-fire modes. As for the combat log you did have over 100 less attacks with FAW 1 not saying FAW 1 does not do less then FAW 3 but you are making it look somewhat worse than it is

I've still seen fire at will still go one shoting enemies. (On normal) It's not meant to do damage, it's meant to grab agro for tanks. That's why they put it where it is.

Lets not deflect the real problem, and that is CSV is way too good, no other MMO would have a power tha strong against a horde that makes all other methods pointless.

MDLB(Multi Directional Lance Barragement) -> Based upon current phaser-type energy beam array's base phaser damage amount, adds an even more daringly so deadly kicktone 531% bonus damage to your phasers per volley for a last resortment for 8.6395 seconds, think of this as 'multi target lance pierce ad astra destroy' super overload ability console. Requires 1.5 sec primary charge up yet pierces and lances all targets in every direction within a 10 km non-restricted cylinder radius immediately thus after. Contains 2 charges maximum at any given time. Minimum Recharge Global Cooldown Time: 5.3575 seconds Dmg boost is only applicable to this specific console while ability is occurring per its active duration time specified. 1.2478 seconds per charge recharge time cooldown reduction if each one is used only 10.9863 seconds after the other. If a different console that's universal has been utilized after this one, reduce's per charge cooldown by 1.2 seconds.

What's the point of buffing anything in a game where the devs and the "players" seem to hate PvP?! I remember stumbling across this game years ago. I had dreams of being able to romp through the quadrant attacking at will. Jesus Christ was I utterly disappointed in the realization that essentially the only way I could get close to that, was going to that stupid borg instance and praying there was another player from an opposing faction also in the same instance. The game is garbage.
