Those I-Beam floor joists are the same as a truss, eh? The house is a combustion chamber in an engine, add air and you cook the contents.... Keep intake and exhaust restricted so things go kaboom only when you want, throwing water into the intake is massively cooling..

Incredible the basic things that need to be explained, I did look at French fireworkers (pro) training videos and those are basics , manage the flow of air the best you can, (close doors) cool down smoke at the ceiling be fore it flashes over . I am astonished that so many false concepts where used , just for the sake of going aggressively inside the fire to get it at its source (which is also of course what is in French training) I am ashamed to comment that way. But a country with so high technology level cannot have so dangerous principles when it comes to fight fires. It may explain why we see so many buildings burning stronger despite the intervention. (It always chocked me to see no other control than opening vents to lower fumes insides, that clearly gives just a small time of better conditions before helping fire to oxygen with air flow.) That one always puzzled me despite the explanations, making a chimney is not a way to extinguish a fire , unless done at a certain point may be.

Isaac I am a firm believe in K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid. In 50 years of dealing with people as an adult, I have found that people blow things out of proportion and make things as complicated as they can. For whatever reason, they over think a subject to death. Fire fighting is no different. Something as simple as, find what's burning and put water on it has turned into Rocket Science. 2:30 Look at the List of things that people have considered at a fire. They have believed this for decades and None of them makes the slightest bit of sense. 8:30 I'm going to give you only one thing to consider that proves my point. Listen to everything that is said here. While it is correct, it should never happen at a fire. This is what should happen. 1. By doing a quick 360, you have determined that front room is The Fire Room. 2. During the 360 a hose has been pulled outside that window. 3. The ONLY venting you do is at that window. This releases a blast of pressure, flame and toxic and flammable smoke and reduces radiant heat that is threatening the rest of that floor. 4. You hit the ceiling with a straight stream at a steep angle and wave it around to cover the entire ceiling. The water explodes off the ceiling and covers the burning material. The flames have disappeared in a few seconds and has reduced the temperature by 1000 degrees almost instantly. 5. Let's say another room on the second floor has erupted in flame. You use a ladder or long pole to break out the window and blast that ceiling with water and That room has stopped burning in seconds. By stopping combustion as fast and directly as possible, the inside temperature has dropped to survivable temperatures and all this can be accomplished BEFORE a team can get fully dressed, grab tools and get the front door open. I have to repeat that. The fire is Out BEFORE a team can be assembled and the door opened. Once all visible burning material is extinguished from the outside, more windows can be opened to help vent the Old smoke from the building and the fresh air coming in won't help the fire. Now they can go into a much safer environment and bring the victim out through that same environment. If you can't see where the fire is and the building is full of smoke, you break out the windows around the entry point to give the pressure and heat a place to escape while you go in with a hose to extinguish the burning material. Then the exterior team breaks out more windows along the path of and in coordination with the interior team until the main body of fire is extinguished. Then you can vent more windows. Wind direction Has to be taken into consideration. Notice I NEVER mentioned Vertical Venting because that makes no sense at all as a structure is not and can not be turned into a chimney Just because Heat Rises. In fact, the opposite effect will occur. K.I.S.S., Get To The Point and Get The Job Done NOW!

V - Vent. You have just introduced fresh air into the structure and allowed gasses to move and mix with that air by creating a Pressure Release area. E - You just entered this space which takes a LOT of time and in that time you have mixed the gasses and allowed the fire to get bigger. I - You try to close the door to that room but the fire is still getting bigger and the temperature might have risen to a deadly temperature or even allowed flames into that room. S - You only have that one room to search because you closed the door and allowed the fire to get bigger in the rest of the house where victims might be. V - Vent the fire room windows. E - Extinguish all Visible Burning Material through inside and out. You have just dropped the interior temperature by 1000 degrees and eliminated the ignition source for gasses. V - Vent more windows where you think victims might be. E - Now that you are fully dressed, have assembled and entry team and gotten the front door open, you can enter with a charged line to further cool the space, mop up and protect the victims and fire fighters. That is how you Do The JOB of Protecting victims and fire fighters. Ask Worcester how VEIS has worked for them. Basement fire. Put it our through the windows and hatch before entry. Period! No windows and can't get the outside cellar door open? Open the front and rear door, cut small holes in the floor just to the side of the entry and fog the basement cooling and condensing the air. Having a 135 degree angle attachment will allow you to horizontally apply water in a 180 degree radius. Water in the basement through the windows should be followed by breaking open the upper windows to allow gasses to escape as the basement water won't allow for the upper temperatures to drop quickly enough. Vertical Venting is ridiculous and always has been. It Never worked. Horizontal Ventilation can be done QUICKLY AND SAFELY with a ladder and gives the gasses a direct path to the outside. It also gives you an access point for extinguishment and entry. Bottom line? NOBODY IS LISTENING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOBODY CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are taking all the fun out of Fire Playing!
