Ugh they are such good pets. The one in my picture just passed away a few months ago. I got him when I was 5. He lived for about 22 years. They're VERY forgiving pets. He would even do his mating call when he was 20+ years old. Never gave up hope in a wife. Never ate anything other than crickets.

I kept 4 firebellied toads (2 green, and 2 brown varients) in a 55 gallon tank with 3 Green Anoles. The right half of the tank was a pond with an island and had a very shallow "river" (about .5 to .75 inches deep) running along the whole front of the other half. Everything else was arboreal for the anoles. I know you aren't supposed to mix species, but they had tons of room. Totally a great pet.

Years ago my mom and I rescued a fire bellied toad from a school she taught at and gave him to my friend who was able to provide the best life for him. The reason for the rescue: my mom found out the school wasn't going to have anyone feeding the toads over the entire summer, and those in charge didn't care. So, I carried the toad in his tank to our car and we got him the hell out of there. He was a spoiled toad at my friend's house and lived for years in toad luxury. She got him a mate too

Those are my favourite frog genus. I keep a pair of oriental fire-bellied toads and they are fantastic. Very colourful, active, have little fear towards larger things than themselves, eat very easily and have one of the most soothing coal. I call them the dart frogs of Eurasia. Also, here in my country, Greece, the yellow-bellied toad, which is in the same genus, is native. I know it in little streams and puddles since childhood. They make very large colonies and they are easy to observe. They easily adopt the defensive posture if caught and their toxin smells a little like sesame. Really harmless, it can just burn you a bit if you have a small cut in your hand and it has contact with it. I have also observed that their call in the wild is much louder. Still muted compared to other frogs, but you can confuse it for a ringed dove for example. Probably, just like crickets, they select places which amplify the sound.

I had 3 in a 10 gallon tank for about 8 years. They're super underrated and lovely frogs. I love their calls, they sound like little barking dogs. Super easy to care for. I fed mine and changed the water 2 to 3 times a week. Misted the dry land section occasionally. One of them ended up with what I assume was bloat and died. If I ever got more I'd love to do a palidarium set up for them. They actually can climb up the glass though. I had one escape and it made it all the way down the hallway and into the kitchen. I wasn't home at the time and trying to get my aunt to describe it to me was annoyingly difficult. She said it could have been a tree frog that came from outside and didn't want to put it back into the tank. I was surprised he survived and traveled that far without dying. So yes they are extremely hardy frogs.

In german their name is Rotbauchunke (red belly unke), wherein unken are a type of amphibians, similar to frogs and toads but their own family. It's a pity that english doesn't have a name for them and they have to borrow it from cousin toad.

Here in Szeklerland (and pretty much all acros in Europe), we have those guys close relatives, the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata). Probably not many people keep them as pets, but otherwise they are everywhere. If there's a tiny pudle, there will be yellow-bellied toads in it, both adults and tadpoles. I used to keep them as pets during summer vacations when I was a kid. Just an outside little bucket-pond thing with water and some rock, and they were absolutely fine. So yeah, I can imagine how hardy the fire-bellied cousin is. Probably the only frog that maybe even hardier is the European green toad (Bufotes viridis).
