Executive Vice President SMRT Train, Khoo Hean Siang said so. He say due to heavy rain water found it way to the cable thus fire broke out. So God make more rain and rain water found it way to the cable.

A fire broke out at Newton MRT station this morning. disrupting train services for 15,000 people on the North-South Line for more than two hours. The Land Transport Authority said the fire was small and localised. SMRT says an electrical short circuit caused a cable to burn. The blaze was initially put out by one of its station staff, but re-ignited. This was the smoky scene that greeted morning commuters at Newton MRT station. THE CAUSE: A fire that broke out in the train tunnel just after 9a.m. The Singapore Civil Defence Force[SCDF] was immediately activated. According to train operator SMRT says the incident was caused by a cable that caught fire in the tunnel. This disrupted nothbound train services from Newton to Toa Payoh stations. And an hour later, services from Marina Bay to Toa Payoh stations were also stopped, so the damaged cable could be removed. SMRT says the incident could have been due to cable insulation issues. Mr Khoo said: ''Because of the heavy rain for the past few days, water could have seeped into the tunnel. There is a certain amount of water that will seep in and wet the environment of the cable''. Southbound train services towards Marina Bay were not affected. they put out the fire at around 10:06a.m. The free bridging bus services were very activated. The first shuttle bus arrived at Newton MRT station about half an hour after the incident occured. A recap of the worst MRT breakdown- A fire that broke out in the train tunnel just after 9am.
