Being in Kansas, I used to carry very dry cow dung. It will smolder for hours, and I would collect dry tinder as I walked. Then, as you said, I wood look for a campsite close to water and with plenty of firewood.

+Robert “FireLion BlueHawk” Winkler Excellent. Cow dung is some of the best to use.

Cool bit of knowledge there, thanks for sharing. Just one concern, I always feel that your preparation for an expedition should be done correctly in the first instance. It's very rare that we'd ever go on a trip without knowing how long we're going to be out for. I like this though in principle.

Absolutely, this is for those situations where your gear was lost or damaged. Always know modern methods and primitive in case one fails.

Great vid. What kind of container would you suggest that keeps a little airflow too? Cheers, Marc

+Scouting Free You could have just a cup with string to hold it to your pack or wear like a necklace. Percolator, a can with a couple holes in it or anything in that sense will work. All you want is a smolder so adjustments might need to be made depending on which vessel you have. A more primitive approach would be to wrap material up in bark or leaves like a cigar.
