Fire Emblem Engage Feels Like Home.

The latest and greatest in the Fire Emblem series takes me back to playing Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones on my Gameboy Advance in middle school. Its got such a classic but new feel to it that captures what makes this series awesome! Engage is probably as polished and accessible as the games have ever been, so if you're on the fence I hope you end up getting it! This is one of my best switch games for 2023, its worth buying.

Appart from how well Emblem rings are implemented in the game, (light years better than crests in 3H,) my favorite change in this game is the introduction of unit types. Backup units allow for chain attacks, making soloing basically impossible. Covert units make dodge-tanking an actually viable strategy by double terrain avoid bonuses. Mystic units counter that by ignoring terrain avoid bonuses altogether. Qi adept units can chain-guard and protect entire groups of units from a single attack. It all meshes so well. This game has the best gameplay of any FE I’ve ever played

Thank you so much for this video I feel like a lot of people have been hating on this game, A LOT Needless to say we live in a time when every little thing gets critiqued, everyone calls everything "mid" and it's just negative all around, for any game really And for everything people have criticized of this game, I really feel that those very things that they all criticise, are precisely why this entry has become my favourite modern FE Of Alear's design, and by extension of the cast for that matter, are designed by the very amazing Mika Pikazo, people reduce their name to just some "cringe vtuber artist", but I, as an illustrator myself, have looked up to her works for many years. I do recommend looking up their illustration portfolio, because you will understand why they chose her for the character design of this game: her signature is of the mastery in using bright and vibrant colours in all of their works People argued that Alear's design is atrocious, yet fail to realize that their design is all the more iconic for their every criticism. Alear makes the perfect face for this entry, their colours are bright and vibrant, which is what this game is, a celebration of the array of colours from this franchise A lot of people also criticise the game because it doesn't seem to have a heavy tone, simply reducing it as "a childish game" Again, I always felt otherwise, especially after playing the game myself Fire Emblem has always been an optimistic series: regardless of the wars and conflict, the cast is always looking onto the hope for the future Comparing this with FE3H isn't exactly fair, and I think a lot of FE3H fans wouldn't stop comparing the two when I think Engage should be appreciated for what it is: a fun story At some point it feels like the argument is "fun=bad", because it doesn't have the existential angst of morally questionable reasons of war Engage is the distilled core of the series, fun, and hopeful for What Lies Ahead, and I am glad that it exists.

a lot of the discourse seems to be really saturated with the comparison to three houses when this is just a fire emblem like you're saying haha, the story in FE6-FE8 is NOT complicated but its still fantastic!! they just need a narrative to move around in and its usually a special occasion when they do some major story like tellius or three houses.

The first fire emblem game I ever played was Radiant Dawn. Still one of my top 5 favorite games of all time, and I think it held FE back from being one of my favorite series, because no game since that has been able to come close to Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn in my mind. I know they’ve made a lot of improvements in the mechanics and balancing, but the stories absolutely pale in comparison to me. I still love digging into the extensive dialogue and lore in the Tellius games, and the scarce cut scenes in Radiant Dawn give me chills to this day. I wonder if the series will ever be able to recreate that feeling for me…

After finishing my first playthrough at maddening I don't think there's no place like home than engage. There's literally no words that can describe my suffering I've experience especially facing the skirmishes and the absolute bonkers of its scaling.

FE Engage has been doing something that I missed from Awakening and the older GBA games that I've played. It makes me feel attached to my units through gameplay. Yeah the social sim and story may be less than three houses, but Three houses to me felt more like a social sim game with tactics gameplay attached to it. I find myself wanting to do multiple playthrough of this game just to make multiple different combinations. Also, Ivy hot. I think this might actually be one of my favorites FE games.

YES!!!! you're making your own stories on the battlefield!! The units you choose to build up are your personal heroes of the land, and it makes the "god squad" you inevitably have at the end of the game feel SO special

Personally I feel its a good thing that they decrease the ammount of social sim aspects. It draws way too far from the core gameplay. And especially the way the game clinged itself to the monastery, a physically set in space place in a game where you travel every part of the world, damaged both story and gameplay. And I hope they never decide to make Recruitments work the way they do in 3h again or in general making descisions that work with casual mode but not with classic mode. A game designed the other way around would not cause problems - because casual mode only grants you advantages. While in this scenario Classic Mode feels like an extra weight rather than a challenge. Also Ivy is hot indeed.

I've been a huge FE fan since it first released in the west with FE7, and Engage has felt so good I've played it for 2 months straight after release. It's just so fun to play and try new characters and classes. And I know I'm gotta start a FIFTH playthrough when the last DLC wave comes out in a few days.

I'm still torn on this one, honestly. The actual combat is phenomenal, and the designs are also great, but I really struggle to care about most of the characters. I've had more "oh, what's his face died? That's fine, whatever" moments than I ever had with previous games. It's less the *tone* of the story compared to 3H but more that...all the characters felt more human and I cared about their fates. Heck, NPCs like Randolph and Ladislava dying had a bigger impact than some of my own people in Engage. I think I'll play the game multiple times still, because the combat is just that fun, but ... I doubt I'm going to remember most of the characters names by this time next year.

It's a good game, without a doubt. But personal preferences always play a role with me. I can't really connect with most of the characters. FOR ME, many of them are too goofy. A far cry from the brilliant character writing of some previous games. I remember Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn for example. Awakening was also good in that aspect and with Three Houses they just knocked it out of the park. The depth of the characters was somethin i would never have imagined to see in a FE Game and to be honest, i don't think we will see that ever again, but the damage is done to me, i'll always compare the character writing of future games with Three Houses

The one and probably only thing I hate, and I hate a lot is the dialogue. As a long time fire emblem fan from the Gameboy days. I hate how cringey all of the characters are and how they interact with each other. It seems like they are just changing literal war into a schoolyard. They're taking the "anime" side of fire emblem and pushing the stereotypes too hard. Even three houses wasn't this bad. It's a turn off for me and so far on chapter 9 I dislike mainly all of the characters in this game so far. It's only a matter of time before we start hearing them say "epic win" and "poggers"

Love this series, hate this game. Engage disappoints in all areas for me. Trash story, boring characters, cringe dialogue, bad character design, awful protagonist, terrible main villain, reused plot elements from other games everywhere, reused character concepts with no originality unlike three houses which actually added depth to these past tropes.the grinding maps were overleveled and way to difficult, rings oversimplify character differences and makes it feel like your building the same 12 units every time. Old lords either feel out of character or have nothing to say due to how little screen time they get. Dlc had trash level design, the supports were oversimplified and are boring, no paired endings minus the lord, terrible censored translation, and lastly the base camp is three houses's but without any of the actual benifits for doing activitys. Most you get are support points which are not hard to get. The whole game is a mess and it genuinely comes of as a bad parody of the series rather than a anniversary game.

The first time I lost interest, and the second time, despite what I was fairly certain was a ideal strategy, a character died due to RNG, so fuck that shit, lol
