Flew my mom out to California for her 70th birthday. Lake Tahoe, California state railroad museum, Muir woods, Alcatraz island were all explored. But Yosemite national park was just unreal, especially in the winter....it's a must see.

The last flower shown was stunning...... our planet may be heaven, but Yosemite is the front gate. :)

Thank you for helping people to understand the importance of disturbance ecology and the amazing life that is brought forth from fire! You are heros for the forest.

I wanted to say it's a type of clarkia ( primrose/onagraceae) like a goblet clarkia of sorts. But it also has a distinct five-spot pattern so maybe it's a five-spot species (malvaceae)

Note that it is the SEVERE fire that allows for the presence not only of special plants, but of black-backed woodpeckers and a host of other species. It's a crime that the public supported salvage logging just outside the park in the Rim Fire, when there were plenty of WUI green-tree forests that could be the focus of a low-key, sustainable harvest program!
