This was filmed at a RAF base in Lincolnshire. The fire truck you saw exploding was one that had been stripped down not the one you saw exploding.

Believe me that must have been some hefty explosion to blow the doors off like that, each of those doors must be at least 6 stone (dead weight) easily, trust me I've carried them! Very impressve blow-up I must say, but very much staged to the trained eye.

Probably the fire spread to the engine, or light the petrol on fire causing the explosion.

Look @ 0:20 for evidence of what I am talkin about, the force of the "explosion" blew the doors off, but in reality the Dennis doors are very, VERY heavy and their hinges are at least 1/5 of an inch thick, would easily withstand a serious blast of most kinds, The resulting explosion from the cylinder was more like a serious petrol/explosive combination than a propane cylinder! Good for its time though!

markthebusman Except that in this instance, the doors were removed prior to the shot and were reattached with cables (given how heavy they were, as you say). You can see them on the DVD transfer and any TV broadcast, and when vehicles are required to explode, the SFX department dismantle the chassis. The doors and bonnet are removed, the seating is gutted out and the charges are placed on the floor and in the boot. The engine is also taken out and more charges are stored there. The doors (on a car, van or small truck) are put back on, except they’re now being held together with wires. Those are pre-measured and rigged to explode, to blow off safely and not too far. They’re usually wired back to the “strike-board” separately and detonated in time with the main ‘blast’ explosives.

Look at the interior shot, when the cylinder "flames" you can see the entire roof headlining is gone, you can see the "X" frame of the cab which would normally be covered by a roof lining, and there is a steel beam in the middle of the windscreen which the cylinder bounces off, very impressive effects but in hindsight was very primitive

Yes and no, it ignited the wiring burning the cab then engine. The cylinder exploded along with the engine...

danielroxheaps Except the camerawork, directing and editing was so haphazard for most of that sequence. They were trying too hard to match Hollywood standards. Too much smoke pouring on-location, which obscured the detail. It killed the impact of the several crashes and cheapened the setpiece. The soap operas rarely do stunts. “London’s Burning” staged them weekly. Kieran’s point remains correct.

@scotfreak it wasn't the BBC that produced it was for ITV made by a London studios at the time called LWT (London Weekend Television) all the episodes are on youtube and the TV movie which started it... Very good watch expect for the last two shows were pretty pants.. Series 1-9 were excellent 10-11-12 were good.. 13/14 were rubbish... first ten series was very focused on fires and other major incidents..
