(L-115 days) ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov take us inside the Soyuz simulator at Star City where they are training for off-nominal situations they could face during their spaceflight. In practice, this includes anything their Soyuz instructor decides to throw at them - including scenarios such as fire or depressurisation.
Andreas is currently training for his 10-day Iriss mission to the International Space Station, set for launch in September 2015.

This is something that's rarely shown to the public, so thank you very much for explaining some of the methods for dealing with a fire emergency aboard a capsule spacecraft. Fingers crossed that the September launch will go smoothly and you'll have no emergencies on the flight to the ISS or back. All the best. :-)

i dont recall any "border control" whatsover on board of the ISS.. there are russian and american and other countries modules and any astronaut can go whatever he/she needs without restrictions.. Ironically the only boundari arrised when Chris Hadfield recorded that Space Oddity music video.. copyright agencies down in earth beated arround the rights trying to say if he recorded it in a US or russian or japan or so module.. because the ISS as its orbiting constantly cant be determined over where the video was recorded (probably all arround the world)

I do wonder why heat exhaustion would be a problem. Is it not possible to solve the problem similar to how the eva suit would without increasing the size of the suit a great deal? At least in the US eva suit (as far as I can remember) used small tubes weaved in a sort of net like configuration that had water pumping through them. I know the eva suit is much larger than flight suits, however adding just the tubes should not increase the size much, of course the flight suit doesn't need to have all the other additional materials. I'd understand somewhat if this were a budget issue. However, we already have so much in place to ensure that our space engineers encounter as little risk as possible. It should be damning to allow something that is probably so simple to fix, like heat exhaustion, to continue to be a threat in a tiny enclosed space that is a controlled environment.

2 different suits for 2 different purpose... An EVA suit would be too bulky to be used in a soyuz so the russians made a special lightweight emergency suit (standard issue after a depressurization accident in the USSR in the early days) The suit DOES have insulation and such is the reason why they can last 130 minutes but they don't have that big ass backpack you see in the back of EVA suits that carry the regulators .... Too bulky... Not a cost issue but crew comfort/safety.... There will be a point where the crew will be so uncomfortable that it actually poses a safety risk instead...

The first thing to do in a fire situation on Soyuz is to switch off spacesuit ventilation to prevent. During whole video it's stays on.
@lateasusual_
@lateasusual_ 8 жыл бұрын
I think they can't simulate that because of gravity and the capsule not being actually ventilated, but they pressed the buttons that would do that in a real scenario.
@hardc0reguy

+lateasusual yes, you right. they did it via KSP(command panels). But the fastest way is to toggle down suit ventilation power switches.

Considering the Soyuz has more than enough Delta-V for any possible mission within LEO, why not just add a fire suppression and extinguishing system like in military armored vehicles. At most it would only add less than 100 kilograms. . . But also, if there is a fire it is probably best to deorbit anyway.
@bergonius
@bergonius 9 жыл бұрын
HONORGUARD308 Because those systems are less efficient and less reliable than simple disabling air convection, a fortiori depressurisation. Also, in close space of capsule military-like extinguishing system will render whole system inoperable, and put pilots in danger.
@HONORGUARD308
@HONORGUARD308 9 жыл бұрын
bergonius yeah but in addition as a first line of action. . . Also you are completely incorrect about your second statement, such systems will not at all render anything inoperable.
@Helghastl33t
@Helghastl33t 9 жыл бұрын
HONORGUARD308 The systems that protect sensitive hardware use toxic gasses, not something you want to have with you in a space capsule. De-pressurising is the safest and most effective way of putting out fires, so why have something else with you if you can just vent the atmosphere (a smart thing to do even if the fire is already out so the toxic combustion products are vented into space).

do you know how a thermos works? It keeps the heat inside by surrounding a vessel with vacuum. If there's no air around you, your heat can't dissipate through the air. Since the body continuously produces heat, it builds up over time.

@dmsdmullins
@dmsdmullins 7 жыл бұрын
It's not they can't work for longer than 125 minutes, it's that the suit cooling/heating systems do not exist. That would add weight, take up space, add complexity to an already complex system, and the suits are designed as minimal survival equipment for an emergency. Kind of like a life-raft isn't designed to be a comfy home.
