In the first episode of our ‘Fit for space’ training series, ESA astronauts Samantha Cristoforetti and Luca Parmitano share how crewmembers prepare for their journey to the International Space Station in the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
Training for the critical moments of Soyuz spaceflight - launch, ascent, docking and landing - take place at Roscosmos’ Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre (GCTC) in Star City, Russia. Here, astronauts use sophisticated Soyuz simulators to practice procedures and respond to emergency situations.
The Soyuz simulators at GCTC are designed to act and be operated in exactly the same way as the spacecraft itself. Astronauts must demonstrate their proficiency in manually controlling the Soyuz to prepare for the unlikely event that automated and ground-based operations fail.
They also prepare for emergency events that could occur onboard the International Space Station itself.

What's also amazing: If they fly the Soyuz, no matter what country they're from, they have to learn Russian. And not just a little, they have to be at least on an "intermediate high" level, in what isn't exactly the easiest language to learn (depening on their first language). The reason: All commands from the flight control center are in Russian, and the commander on board is always a Russian. Especially during the critical manual docking phase, there is a constant stream of instructions in Russian coming from the ground, and the astronauts have to comment everything they do in Russian as well.

@@zeendaniels5809 | It will be challenging, yes, but not extremely hard. For English speakers, Russian is not even in the top 10 hardest major world languages. It's in the same greater family as most European languages, the Indo-European group, so Imagine learning Swahili or Arabic. Or Chinese for that matter.
@frankthespank
@frankthespank 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that’s stupid. In the world of aviation the ONLY language allowed is English, must be why Russia doesn’t have a single airliner certified to fly outside of Russia. WHY make everyone learn an archaic language that has no use outside of these old space capsules that are rapidly becoming obsolete? Most people know English already, having to learn Russian is really a step backward and just shows how egotistical Russia is. That may work out for them when they had the only ride into space but that isn’t the case anymore.

Soyuz is a great programme that managed to launch on the same day as Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, 50 years later. I hope that history will look back as fondly as Soyuz MS-13 as they did with the Apollo 11 mission 50 years earlier because it speaks to the longevity, reliability, trust & Russian domination of space regarding Soyuz. It has outlived Apollo by slightly more than forty years & is set to live about 50 years longer than Apollo.
