One of the best ways to learn to build a fire was the old boy scout second class requirement of build a fire with two matches or less. By practicing you learned how to keep your match from going out before you got it to the tinder; available natural tinders; staging the size of kindling and fire wood; patience; and that knowledge added self reliance. I did that in 1953 and I still use that info today.

A couple things I do: BIG 6 INCH Ferro rods with a lanyard hole I can put red 550 cord in, and when it takes more than a few strikes without success when it's really wet out, stop and "slowly" scrape off a small pile of shavings and light that pile! I NEVER see anyone share that trick?! Cotton balls and Vaseline "works", but it's messy. I unroll cotton balls and soak them in melted wax, that stays waterproof and to use it just bend it until it breaks open dry cotton fibers. Plus you can just toss them loose in your pack.

So glad to hear people with common sense! I've said it for years, I'm all for learning and mastering primitive fire starting but when the SHTF and I need fire I'm reaching for a lighter 1st... not a big deal to carry 2-3 in the car, bag and pockets.

Great video, a couple of good ideas I have to try out. Talking about survival fire starting, have either of you tried using potassium permanganate and sugar? It takes a while to form into a flame, but the benefits of having potassium permanganate and a fire starter, disinfectant and water treatment solution all in one should not be over looked.

great video guys. Lots of good useful info especially about "trying it out" before hand and using body heat /rub it to dry the tinder. With ferro rods i try to remember to rotate it and try to wear it down evenly avoiding having those" dips" in the rod. flame , spark and heat(solar/friction /chemical) methods with tinder and tinder making tools. Exposing more surface does help like making shavings or feather sticks.
@garyminick10505 жыл бұрын
Not meaning to be a busybody but those dips in the fero rods can be taken out with your scraper or knife by holding your knife at a different angle almost pointing up as you are pushing down. I accidentally learned that while taking bow making class . This technique is also good for taking the " rub board " effect off of your bow wood when you're making a bow.

Great video, I carry many of the same things. In my kits I have a Bic lighter, a high quality ferro rod (Uberleben or a Baylite 1/2 diameter), one of the Pure fire tactical magnesium kits with ferro rod, striker and fatwood. Also have stormproof matches, a zip lock bag with Vaseline and cotton balls (my favorite), an inexpensive Buck folder just for backup, and a head lamp. Other commercial tender products work themselves in and out of my kit. I will be adding duct tape! Every fire I start whether it is out on the trail or at home I use one of my kits to get the fire going.

If you are going to a public campground, it is not recommended to bring your own wood. I have thought of doing that in the past doing that in the past but it is against the law( I think) in most places. Problem being that there is a chance you could import some species of bug not native to the area and that could have serious repercussions.
@veteratorvulpes11165 жыл бұрын
I personally hate the Vaseline version too. What I do instead is dip cotton swabs into paraffin wax on one end, and the other end I use as a transition tinder to set the paraffin alight, which you can do with any other fire starter since it's cotton. The other thing I've learned recently is that you can use candle wick material (like they sell at hobby shops for making candles) exactly like fire cord, if you use your knife to fluff up a spark catching end of it first.

Is it usually ok to use the edge of the blade to scrape magnesium? Is it softer than the sharp edge?
@hddynarider45285 жыл бұрын
The magnesium he is using is from Pure Fire Tactical, it is very pure and it softer than blade steel. It looks like he is using a Zero Tolerance 0566, if so it is S35VN very hard steel. I use the same magnesium and I use the spine of my knife to shave it.
@danielcluley8705 жыл бұрын
Typically, bushcrafters will have a knife that has a sharp 90° spine to use for striking fire-steel/ferro-rods and also maybe scrape off bark or shavings for tinder source. He can scrape off soft magnesium from that good quality chunk with the blade, but it is not recommended for repeated use in the field. A 90° butt of an axe/hatchet is also good. A good small axe/hatchet would be a great tool to have for creating fire, if the STHTF.
@danielcluley8705 жыл бұрын
I was taught by an old Army Ranger who would recommend carbon steel and a charred lantern-wick to carry with you at all times. He showed us how to flint-strike and bow-drill. There are probably much easier ways to accomplish this essential task if you are resourceful and prepared.
@moose99065 жыл бұрын
Never use the blade of your knife to strike the fero rod. You are dulling your blade for no reason. Any knife with a 90 degree spine is what you want to use. If you are using a folder, make sure it locks. Second, you are striking the fero rod wrong. You don't push the striker, you pull the fero rod. This way you can place your striker right on top of your birds nest and not sent everything flying. As far as being in the woods and being afraid to get your hands dirty (with petroleum jelly), I don't even know where to start with that one. Better not hunt, fish, harvest anything from a pine tree etc because all those things will get stuff on your hands.
@chrisduncan94635 жыл бұрын
Great video..what are both of your thought on matches?
@JohnDoe-ee6qs5 жыл бұрын
Chris Duncan as they're not answering, get strike anywhere matches lots of em, prep them by lighting a tea light candle and dip the heads of the matches in the paraffin wax to waterproof the heads then after they're dry put em in a pill container, just as a side note buddy, did you notice that all their kit looks brand new and unused?, and the fact that he didn't know that natural flint a lot of the time has a layer of chalk that has to be knocked off to get to the flint, you should really check out David West's channel

The magnesium blocks that are made in China are NO GOOD! Get one that is made in the USA at least. Much better if you are going to get a Coleman one. Everyone should carry a light, even if you don't smoke! I carry duct tape in my fire kit but sticking fatwood or other tinder to the tape and rolling up is something I didn't think of or have heard anyone else talk about. Thank-You! Next fire mentality is good thinking when hiking. I would get a leather or water proof pouch to put tinder in while walking to or along the way to your destination.

Find good tinder. You all live in Florida, so Monkey Fuzz out of palm trees is the best, easiest source. Gather your tinder and small fuel first, and all you need is spark. Hold it up in your hands and blow on it for a flame and then push it into your progressively built kindling and fuel. The fuel is the least thought about portion. Get as many fuel sticks as you can. About 1" - 1.5" pine (in Florida) are the best resource you have for fuel. Gather up as much of that as possible, burns great and hot (although somewhat smokey) for pretty much all purposes in Florida. You don't need to carry magnesium or some other over-kill stuff, all you need is a spark. Hell, Duct tape and Pringles can be your fire starter if you are looking for something. Just get a good spark and you are golden and warm.
