Thank you so much for these Reading the Images series, learning so much through them and trying my best to share with family and friends at church here in Brazil. Some ideas that makes the a lot o sense for me, seems to be difficult to swallow for many friends. How can i mind this gap about these type of subject? One example would be this idea that the creation would be restored rather than destroyed, even though i went through many passages like Romans 8, looks like the left behind mindset is locked into their minds Thanks again! Well done! Thank you. I think of the transfiguration with Moses, Elijah and Jesus. Two things to notice: Moses came with the law. Elijah came with fire (power). Jesus came with grace and truth. And while Elijah's display of power was sufficient against his many enemies, he did not use this power against Jezebel, the woman behind it all. He ran from her. In regard to imagery with the woman representing mankind in general, this is profound. It also reminds me of David overpowering his external enemies, but running from Saul and Absalom. Yes, this is about a refining fire. But in the larger scheme of things, it isn't about moral refinement, but a refinement of focus. What do Jezebel, Saul and Absalom have in common?

Does that mean that everyone will eventually be purified by fire? Universal salvation?

Most see the sacrifices as representing a "purging of evil" in this world. In the broad sense that's true. But the "evil" that is purged is what God determines to be so. With the sacrifices, God's fire actually burns the righteousness of mankind, not her immorality. Remember each animal is to be "without blemish." Sounds counter-intuitive, doesn't it? (Job thought so.) But so is God's initial forgiveness of sins in a judgmental world. This then is the difference between Jesus and Elijah. Elijah came in power and law (the tools of the world). Jesus came in weakness and grace. (Wright is still one of my favorite speakers. I'll take a well-reasoned argument over a dogmatic preacher any day. Thank you.)
