This tabletop was originally made as a pallet to transport new equipment to the house in my minivan. Rather than waste the construction I have converted it into a hard-use table for my shop. in this video, I am sealing the wood with sodium silica with wood glue suspension (they don't mix). this process will densify the wood making it more durable, fire-resistant, mold-resistant, and water-resistant.

I've heard of using sodium silicate to preserve eggs but not to fireproof wood. Although now I seem to remember a VERY old Gilbert chemistry set where one of the "experiments" was to treat paper with sodium silicate to fireproof it. I think adding acetone was a bad choice; it's not a good solvent for PVA glue and an even poorer solvent for sodium silicate. Just about any metal ions will form a precipitate with the silicate ions, so you're probably best off using distilled water to prepare the solution. Very interesting. I look forward to seeing your results. This would be useful to treat a wooden solvent/paint storage cabinet, at least for storing small quantities of solvents, stains, shellac, etc. Thank you.

Well there were no observable differences for sure with the acetone. Very likely flashed off quickly given the surface area, and very low concentration. After the water glass soaked in, a damp rag brought the glue back to a point where it could adhere to the wood, and very little remained. I figured I would wait at least a week for drying to wet/char the testing samples I produced in this process.

Honestly the view response for this video was so slow and low it just didn't seem like anybody cared. It's been a tortoise of a video. The samples are still intact, and I've had no problems with the table other than places why hammered on stuff causing the osb to flake slightly. I'll try to see what I can throw together.

Sodium silica and PVA really didn't mix well. The PVA clumped up like cottage cheese. The acetone didn't then the PVA either. One of the comments suggested something like isopropyl alcohol as it is a hydrophilic solvent. The table has been in use for some time now I have done a variety of wet things on it and the surface is unblemished.
