In this video you will see how to use the Coghlan's Magnesium Fire Starter. This type of magnesium fire starter has been around a long time and has earned its place as one of the most reliable tools for making fire. This Magnesium Bar is a perfect addition to any fire makers kit. Magnesium will even burn underwater. These types of fire starters are available from many different manufacturers including ones from china. If you have or are planning to purchase one from china make sure you test it. I have heard reports of some not working at all. As with any gear you include in your systems you should always test it before you venture into the field.

I got one of these as a stocking stuffer, and I honestly had no idea this was how you used it. I'm used to blast matches and big ferro rods you scrape with something, I just thought the fat body was just to hold it and the rod was just small but really tough or something hahaha. Pretty cool little device, I know magnesium burns crazy hot!

Thats magic, so I ordered one. Its a fueless lighter! Maybe a bit powerful for a cigarette but just the job for trying to light a fire in the winter wilderness 🔥

I've purchased a few of those from Harbor Freight, I generally take a hacksaw and saw the epoxy away to get the ferro rod off then use them in small fire kits for family. Then once in a while I'll just scrape down the bars for the magnesium and put it into small ziplock bags.

I recoat the bar and ferro rod with wax to keep it from oxidizing. Don't have any problems. Important for the ferro rod. If you happen to forget it in a damp location for several years it will not oxidize. I recently unplugged a Zippo lighter where the "flint" was left in the lighter for 20 years. It had oxidized and expanded in the flint tube. Lighter works like new now after drilling out the old flint. FYI lighter flints are actually miniature ferro rods and will oxidize if left uncoated and in humid conditions for many years.

use a small flat wooden chisel for shaving magnesium . The Chisels are very cheap .

I hate this thing. I’m so bad at shaving the damn thing and keeping it all in one pile. It just spreads in the wind

Carry some steel wool. Rip a piece off and scrape the shavings into it. This will keep the wind from blowing it away and the steel wool will burn as well. Be Well friend.
