In 20 years of plumbing I've never been through what I went through the other day, plumbing can throw us some curve balls but this caught us totally by surprise. We will be showing you how to install designer radiators and plumbing in the pipework. The job started off as usual with nothing out the ordinary, as we was making our final connections however we had a disaster. Looking back on it I still cant believe it happened and as a plumber doing plumbing everyday I hope this never happens again!! Let me know what you think in the comments, has this ever happened to you?
Thank you all again for your supports mentioned in the video we are approaching 5K hopefully sooner than I thought so let me know about the NEW prize in the giveaway.

You’re not alone mate. Same thing happened to me. However, this little flame I had caused disappeared behind the plaster board but could still see the smoke. I quickly had to smash a hole above where the flame disappeared and chucked a mug of tea down the cavity. Turned out the plaster board was dot and dabbed over the old wall which had old wallpaper on it, which was what caught fire. I shat myself from here to next Christmas.

Well done for sharing and proving that things can go wrong from time to time. Happened to me a long time ago but it was hairfelt that caught and shot up a cavity wall. After that I always always always had a pressurised spray bottle full of water to hand when soldering and a small fire extinguisher on site just in case. Once bitten twice shy. Keep up the excellent work.

A few years ago a company I worked for house bashing 2 boys were 1st fixing a town house. The one lad was soldering in the eve's and some rubbish caught fire. He made me laugh telling the story. He ran down the 2 flights of stairs filled a bucket from an outside tap, hoofed it back up the stairs to throw the bucket on the fire. He did this 3-4 times before giving up. He said each time he returned to the fire with the bucket the fire had doubled in size. In the end the blaze burnt down 3 houses that were demolished back to foundation and re built.

Wow that was unbelievable mate you reacted really well and quickly but don’t let it knock you, I’d recommend press mate it’s an expensive lay out but it’s well worth it, it does take some getting used to and you have to plan out your pipe work and fittings slightly differently plus the fittings are more expensive but once you’re used to it you make up the price difference on getting the job done quicker so you can price up a job the same, and more importantly a lot safer. I felt your fright mate. Horrible experience and a lucky escape. I had one too. I had the whole ceiling down in ground floor bathroom to expose heating pipes. I needed to T into the flow and return to install drop downs for a new towel rail radiator. With the ceiling down the job was a sinch. I pulled back the fluffy felt lagging at least two feet either side of the new T Joints. I even sprayed the fluffy felt lagging with my water spray bottle to ensure the ends were damp and far away from any source of ignition. Everything was ready and I began heating the joint. Solder began to form between the joint and pipe and i stopped to look at the back of the joint. As I did that, my instinct was to hold the blow torch away from me.... for a split second. the flame touched the dry part of the fluffy felt lagging. It lit instantly and raced faster than i could think away from me. The lagged pipes disappeared at the far end underneath the floor void filled with fluffy lagging, cobwebs and wood shavings. I lept from my hop up, grabbing the burning pipe run and ripped the entire lot down from the ceiling just before the flame reached the point of disappearing under the floor void to the rest of the house. In no exaggeration I believe I was half a second from a full house fire. Even just writing this gives me shivers still. Be thankful that you did not have any of that fluffy felt lagging leading away from your fire site as I tell you now you would not be celebrating a close call escape. Quite a different story would be in the making. The positives we take away from such horror stories are that with that experience you are now better equipped to understand the danger and speed at which these things can happen. Your risk assessment skills just went up 10 fold. Glad that you and all survived intact and good on you for posting up the experience as you will have educated people more than you can imagine.

What a horrible, frightening experience. Could have been much worse, of course. When soldering close to a surface that’s just above the pipes, I first give a good spraying from an old antibac spray bottle filled with water, as I’m paranoid about setting something on fire! (However, not sure that would have worked in your case.) Anyway, the finished rads are a really neat install. Thanks for the great video, and hope your hands recover quickly.

Look after yourself. Check T&C on your insurance. They will probably require you to carry out a risk assessment (only has to be basic) mandatory that extinguishers are to hand and the real kicker is they expect you to remain on site 1 hour after your last hot work to ensure it doesn't burst into flames. We all take it a bit for granted until something happens like this. Glad you're all good. Will that make you consider press fit?

@@bluebulldog_ukHere in Poland it's a legal requirement for all drivers to have a fire extinguisher in the car. Even though it's not in the UK, just have one in the car. In case of a bigger fire, it's always more effective than water. And much safer - no electric shock danger. It's perfectly normal to be agitated and scared. We are only humans. Besides emotional engagement shows best your attitude towards work - you are proud of what you do and you care about it.

When I was in tech. One of the lads was soldering in a domestic job and a bit of hot solder fell down between the cracks in the floor. Unfortunately for him the builder who built the row of houses used inferior insulation to save money and it went up like a bomb fire. 3 house burnt down by the time the fire brigade could get it under control. Unfortunately for the fella at the time the song fire starter by the prodigy was in the charts and from then on whenever he walked into the room they would stick the song on. When plumbing goes wrong it goes wrong.😂.

I was soldering in a cupboard to some pipes that had old school lagging on that was hidden behind the wall, a flame must've licked up the lagging... After a little while I realised their was some smoke in the attic above, I bounced the attic to see flames surrounding storage tank, it had went up the lagging and caught the plastic wrapping on the tank jacket... The smoke and heat was crazy, I immediately started bailing water from the tank to put it out, thankfully it was out after 30 secs and only damaged the jacket... Like everyone else said it’s definitely not down to you, I’m not a plumber, but have done my own plumbing work, and on this house just in the ceiling space between the choices I’ve found plumbers waste Boiler instructions tissue paper. Everything swept in as dry as a bone. In fact I’ve pulled two bucketfuls out of the job. I’m doing now even right down to when the notch the Joice, at least with no regard for your self you ripped out the ceiling and put the fire out as you can see from your hands, and good on you for going back in and finishing the job, hat’s off to you 👍👍👍👍🎄🍺🍺have a good Christmas and enjoy the new year

Wow,that brings back bad memories, I suppose all plumbers who've grown up with blow lamps will have a story about potential fires starting guy I was apprenticed to pocked a couple of 15 mm ends up in a loft, went up next morning fluxed a few joints and some pipe together lit his lamp, boom the whole loft went up like mallam! Feckin Builders had been up earlier in the morning and spayed all the joists with some sort of antifungal treatment, vum No roof fire brigade the full monty, luckily he escaped with just minor burns to his arms, praise the Lord for push fit and press joints these days is all I can say

Similar thing happened to me about 20 years ago whilst soldering outside, ran a new gas pipe high level 1 brick course below the sofit on a bungalow. There was an old flue deflect plate where the joint was i angled my flame and there must have been a small amount of the old loft insulation sticking out the gap between softit and brick or sofit packed with insulation and caught fire, didn't even know I'd done it until the apprentice came out and said there was a lovely baking smell inside thought the old dear was baking 😂 i realised what had happened sent him up into the loft told him to pull any insulation away that he could safely, whilst i grabbed the 2x tonka toy sized extinguishers from the van, he emptied them both inside but he could still smell burning, i filled the kitchen sink bowl and pulled the tiles off outside whilst stood on my steps and dumped it on the now smoulder old felt. We still finished the boiler shaking and double checking everything (for weeks) absolutely horrible feeling, the worst bit was another plumber who goes in the merchants witnessed all of it as he was work opposite as he saw me running to the van ripped the piss for ages, just happy that somehow we only had to replace the felt and not the trusses, roof or bungalow🤦 fair play for putting it on here

Could have gone bad if there was a slight delay or left unknown. Quick thinking of yours avoided a big disaster. I had a situation where I cut a 15mm gas pipe going to fire place instead of cutting the radiator one. Not sure how it happened but as soon I cut a bit and heard the hissing sound, I was like Omg. It was a panic moment. Opened the window, ran down to get meter box key which you never get hold off 😮. Asked customer where is your meter box. But quickly remembered I keep a spare key on the dash board. Yes man it makes you think and you go silent for sometime. Every job gives you an experience and lessons. Well done mate. I like your honest videos.

@@bluebulldog_uk haven’t got a clue mate had ones with inhibitor in doing the same, someone told me it’s due to when they are made in china most of the time they stay sat outside at docks for months at a time afterwards. Yeah m8 lucky escape, you never know what's in a void in a property,I know a painter who burnt a house down years ago when I was an apprentice he was burning off paintwork outside on a window and the net curtains in house must off caught fire long story short house caught fire nobody inside luckily but caused massive damage, funny never did see him again.. I'm a site plumber and we have to get a hot work permit to soldier anything and it means you have to have a fire extinguisher next to you when your soldering for peace of mind I'd recommend one.

Had very similar while soldering in a bathroom. Behind the joint was two studs At diagonal and a large void going up to the ceiling. Had all the water off, soldered and heard a crackling sound behind the wall. I could then see a shimmer of flames and then smoke. Luckily the lady had a bowl full of washing up water in the kitchen. I ran down and grabbed it, managed to Chuck it in the right place where it ran back down behind the wall. I literally s*** myself. Horrible horrible sick feeling afterwards. Could have been so bad.
