For the record, the word "Fire" includes a diphthong, which is functionally a half syllable. So everyone is wrong. It's neither 1 or 2, it's 1.5. I know because people have also tried to argue my name (Dale) is one syllable in spite of having two seperate sounds (Day-ul). That "ul" is the diphthong. Just like fy-ur, the "ur" is a diphthong.

Yep, it definitely is 2 syllables unless you're from the deep south or something. He was getting pretty close with rolling his R's too.
@DHREAVER8 жыл бұрын
Nope. UK here, and it is for sure 1 syllable. It's pronunciation is (aside from the first letter) identical to higher and liar which are both two syllables. It's pronunciation is also identical to ire pyre, tyre and hire all of which have 1 syllable. The pattern here is in the structure of the word. Higher is two syllables because high is a word. High-er. Hire is one syllable because hi is not a related word. It is unfortunately a synonym of hello which confuses things slightly but the point is there isn't a root of the words hire, ire, fire, tyre, pyre, etc. , they are the root. For some reason I don't fully understand this makes them only one syllable.
@LukenszMk8 жыл бұрын
Foreigner here, never heard anyone even attempt to pronounce those words with one syllable. Just because higher includes another word and hire doesn't, doesn't mean that one is 2 syllables and the other is 1. They're not synonyms but homonyms, which means they have the same pronouncation - but different meanings. So one can't be 1 syllable and the other 2. A syllable is a separate sound. 'Hai-er', is what I would pronounce either, and that makes it 2. If you tried to say it with 1 syllable it'd become hair, which is completely different.
@DHREAVER8 жыл бұрын
Feel free to google it (ignore the first result about their use in haikus) It is interesting that hire and higher are considered homophones even though they have different syllable counts, but that is just the way it is. English is fucked up, don't shoot the messenger. Saying you've never heard anyone attempt to pronounce them with one syllable sounds ridiculous to me, See Fuel by Metallica, Ready Aim Fire by Imagine Dragons or Fireball by Pitbull if you would like to hear some people pronounce it with 1 syllable.
@DHREAVER8 жыл бұрын
LukenszMk also see Donald Trump or Alan Sugar (for American and UK) saying you're fired, with fired as 1 syllable. Plenty of people are pronouncing it correctly.In fact outside of songs where syllables are split and duplicated, I'm struggling to find anyone who pronounces it with 2.

@the-four-seven8 жыл бұрын
I never thought I'd say this, but I'm with Dan. It's two. (Yes, they say it can be either one or two, but I say it with two different sounds. "Fi-er".)
@DHREAVER8 жыл бұрын
It's pronounced the same as higher (2) and hire (1). Pronunciation takes a back seat to word structure here. Fire, pyre, hire, ire, tyre, even shire are all one syllable. Uk here FYI.

English syllables are weird. We have "lettergrepen" in Dutch, which isn't exactly the same, as we have actual syllables as well (which is a linguistic distinction). Lettergrepen are more clearly defined than syllables, which are defined by pronunciation
@DHREAVER8 жыл бұрын
Syllables aren't all about pronunciation in English, especially in this case it's more to do with word structure. Higher is 2, hire is 1, despite the fact they're considered homophones.

I think, for me at least, the reason why "fire" seems monosyllabic is that exaggerating the vowel change as Dan does in the video sounds very unnatural and not something you'd do in actual speech. Contrast this with its rhyme, "higher": because it derives from the root "high", you can place a consonantal Y in the middle of the vowel change when drawing the word out for emphasis. Most accents would not permit this for "hire", which is otherwise a homophone (though Dan's might, which may fuel some of the disagreement). That said, the fact that there is a vowel change into which a dividing Y can be inserted is certainly a fair argument for seeing it as two syllables. In my accent (not a million miles from RP), the vowel change is reduced to the point of sometimes being completely absent, but that isn't true of all (or even most?) English accents.
