Outstanding video. None of the information was really new to me (I have been shooting for some years now), but it was presented in a very concise and clear manner. I'll certainly use this video when training new shooters. Which I regularly do, as I like to take non-gun people (who are curious/interested) to the range to try out shooting for the first time (there isn't really a public gun culture here in Germany as there is in the US, so very few people have ever personally been exposed to guns and shooting, especially with the reduction, and now outright suspension, of conscription for the mandatory basic military service). Thanks!

How funny you bring this topic up. I had to qual at work the other day with the mini 14 and I DQ'd. The Ro's were tripping out and were laughing. " What is wrong with you " I said maybe too much coffee. I shoot again and DQ'd. Now I'm tripping out and going over in my head what I could be doing wrong. Well I figured it out.. I have been shooting my red dots for a year now a dry firing everyday and shooting at the range with my own weapon systems. What I was doing was using the front iron sight like a red dot. Well I completely forgot about the rear peep sight. lol. None the less on my third go around I shot a perfect score. But let this lesson teach other people to not do what I did. Kind of scary thinking about it now but lesson learned.

I figured out that you are right control eye 06:22 but i know some peoples they are right handed but their control eye is the the left eye. To know your controling eye aim your index directly to a target than colse your left eye if your index on the target than your right eye control and the same with the other eye if you see the index on target with you left eye than your left eye take control.

I come from a law enforcement background & never understood the eye dominance test because I couldn't get it to work. Consequently, I learned to keep both eyes open on the range (which caused me to see two guns when focusing on the target) and aim with the gun to the left. I was always a consistent top gun shooter with mostly perfect scores. Years later I learned about "mixed ocular dominance" which means your eyes are equally dominant, which is why the dominance test never worked for me. Anytime I tried explaining my aiming style to my instructors I just got confused looks.

Great video! Really had me all sorts of stressed with the target's position, thank you for clarifying that so early haha. Have you ever personally used an a1/a2 mounted sight? Looking to upgrade my rear aperture so that I can more confidently and quickly get a picture for 0-50 meters in an emergency while out in the bush. I have a reproduction Colt 4x but do not feel comfortable keeping it mounted while in the wild incase I need to use the irons for a close threat like a bear or deliverance type maniac (God forbid, but when you bring your wife and friends with you I'd rather be safe than sorry)

What I don't get is why guns manufactures don't make pistols with a front post that is exactaly the lenght of the gap betwen the rear sight posts. That way you have a quick indication if you have propper alignment, if there is any gap at all on eighter side you know its off and can adjust. I find compensating for the sight verticaly is much easier.
@KitBadger
@KitBadger 4 жыл бұрын
Width or height?
@AlanTheBest97
@AlanTheBest97 4 жыл бұрын
@@KitBadger the same width as the gap and the same height as the rear sight post. So if you have a propper sight picture you should se a perfectly horizontal blade of metal with the marker on the front sight indicating the bullet impact point just above It. i think this is a nice ideia for pistol sights especialy. You have a quick indication if your sight picture os correct and can easily adjust. If you see all metal bellow and a perfect horizontal line on top of the sights just put the marker on the target and you are good to go. I say this because when I learned how to shoot I'd have problems mainly with making sure that there is equal amounts of space betwen the rear knotch and I still think It is where people have more difficulty with sight picture.

Question for you Ivan: As a fellow glasses wearer, with astigmatism, no matter what I do I cannot get a clear sight picture using the small aperture on a “carry handle” type sight. I’ve tried nose to charging handle and getting back off the peep. I cannot see enough through the peep to get my front post on target at any distance past 50 yards. Just been using the 0-200 aperture all along. What am doing wrong?

I assume this applies to shooting with both eyes open as well? I'm trying to learn to shoot both eyes open because I've been told that it's a better way to train, but when I focus on the front sight, my target becomes split in my vision because it's further away, meaning I have to remember to keep the sights on the target on the right. Alternatively, I can kind of "flex" the focusing reflex of my eye to keep my eyes aligned at the distance of my target, producing a single target image which then becomes blurry as I sort of "manually" focus on the front sight. Is there a correct way to go with this? What do you recommend? Thanks a lot for these videos, they're very helpful.
@KitBadger

If you need to close an eye for a second to get focused on the front sight, just do it and then open your other eye.

I don't think you should focus on the front sight, at least with defensive pistol use. You should focus on your target, which you would do subconsciously in a situation like that. The fundamentals you mention are true and practical otherwise, but I think it's better to train past focusing on the front sight; meaning train and practice getting your sights aligned as you mentioned but once you've got that down pat, start practicing on drawing your pistol, bringing the sights to eye level and shooting. The "blind swordsman" drill is really great for this. I can shoot about a 3" group at 25 meters while focusing solely on the target. Just to reiterate; this is for practical defensive shooting, not target shooting or competition. Great video. Thanks for keeping us entertained and educated during this pandemic.
@beardoggin8963
@beardoggin8963 4 жыл бұрын
Reaction Is A Weakness as a shotgun shooter I understand where you are coming from. But in my experience with new shooters they will focus on the target but fail to have the handgun even somewhat close to on target. They will hit way off at times. Starting from scratch you should learn to find the front sight and focus on it until you get your grip and recoil control down. Sure, once you have fired thousands of rounds you can go for more instinctive shooting.
