I do like how Jonathon does always allow for the "Rule of Cool" in his analysis. Sometimes in the "Historian X reacts" segment, they forget to account for game mechanics and what will look good on screen, and while Jonathon will nit-pick mistakes and poor design, he does appreciate what looks good and what works in a game setting, while still obviously being an absolute expert in guns. Always love his enthusiasm in these and Royal Armouries vids.

@@musicman24X Don’t get me wrong, I like realism and appreciate efforts by game devs to depict things accurately but every game will have to make compromises either for game mechanics to function or for a game to be appealing visually, sometimes very significant ones. If anyone is curious about the North Korean/Korean details in this video, 11:30 The rifle Jonathan is holding is Type 58 rifle, a North Korean licensed version of AK(or AK47 you guys love to call it). the upper marking for selector says "련"(short for "련발", meaning multiple shots) and lower marking says "단"(short for "단발", meaning single shot). you might not be able to recognize it well because: a. the marking on that rifle degraded quite badly, b. they are written in deconstructed korean letter like "ㄹㅕㄴ" and "ㄷㅏㄴ" each. 16:15 the Korean marking on the side of the launcher says "단위56". "단위" generally means unit or standard in Korean and the word is not used for weapon names in neither the South nor the North. If they gone with correct naming code for NK weaponry, it would have been "56식" or "56형", which means "Type56" in English. Anything related to Korean in Crysis series is quite bad. It literally is a meme contents for South Korean memers. ps. I can't get how they came up with names like FY71 or AY69 for supposed NK firearm. Is Y supposed to be word for gun or something? FYI, assault rifles in NK are called "보총"(sounds "bo-chong"), short for "보병총"(sounds "bo-byeong-chong", means infantry gun) and MPs are called "기관단총"(sounds "kigwan-daan-chong", literal meaning is short machinegun). ps2. the reason for psudo XM8 having rails on both carryhandle and upper receiver is because the carryhandle is detachable. you have that version of the rifle in game, called SCARAB. I mean... bad naming sense.

I agree, but there's an obvious reason for it. They all share a lot of parts, especially in a regional sense. It makes repairing various firearms easier because they are in common use and it allows everyone to innovate on one part at a time and do quick revisions. Now guns are a little more modular.

To be fair there's more guns in general, but I'd be hard pressed to tell a lot of hunting rifles, breach loaded shotguns etc. Apart without a closer look. Design that works, works. Something to note about the missile launcher in Crysis is that it's actually a disposable weapon. If you look closely, the 'ammo' that is being picked up is actually a whole launcher, and the action the user is going through when they first pull it out to use it is to pull out and extend the weapon, like how an M72 LAW is designed. It's basically a fancy M72 with 3 shots instead of 1.

The North Korean Assault Rifle (the AK) is also present as a hidden kind of easteregg weapon in one of Crysis 3's later missions where you need to take down 3 anti air guns in a large open area. Its been slightly updated from its appearance in Crysis 1 and also happens to be the single most customizable weapon in the 3rd game. 23:33 you can see the back of the rounds feeding in to the gun and they don't looked to be dimpled from what I can make on my resolution. I couldn't see the ejected rounds to see if they were properly marked but the one since the one from and earlier gun where correct I am going to assume these would be too. If so, is this the first instance of a gun featured on this show where the pre and post firing bullet casings had the correct markings?

For the Pic rail inside the carry handle of the rifle, it's just the right size for a 45 degree canted iron sight, or a flashlight/laser mount, or the new trend of a 45 degree canted pic rail, which would have a small pistol red dot mounted on it.

List of a few other details: Bauer SOCOM/ M12 NOVA: Looks like a futuristic version of the earlier Hk UCP prototype (eventually became the USP). SCAR: Futuristic version of the Hk XM8 (would have been called the SCAR if it won the Scar program). Crysis 1 was chambered in 6.8 with Crysis 2-3 making the change to 4mm Sabot. Under-barreled weapons also include a miniaturized Gauss rifle and a miniaturized Typhoon system to add variety to player choice. Typhoon: The rifled barrels are housed in the front of the weapon and only the magazine with stacked ammunition is removable (as seen in the “7 Wonders” Crysis 3 Typhoon trailer). Gauss Rifle: The weapon is in a bullpup configuration to maximize barrel length. I would also surmise that the profile is inspired by the G11 given Crytek (a German company) featuring a lot of weapons inspired by Hk. Feline: Chambered in the same 4.7mm as the MP7, I wonder why they made that change from the Crysis 1 SMG? I personally always felt that the weapon felt underpowered for its size, and I wonder if the visual design of a more compact weapon would have changed the perception of its performance? Mk 60 Mod 2: strong resemblance to the MG4 with the dust cover on the side of the top cover (yet another German weapon reimagined for the futuristic setting).

If i remember correctly the ammo system of the SCAR doesn't change in real caliber but only on a bullet level, the 4mm sabot is basically an encapsulated 4mm in the 6.8mm round

@@v.h.s.italia I thought it was 6.8 SPC with a change to sabot 5.56x45. But with either model the magazine looks to be longer than either cartridge yet not deep enough to have a 40rd capacity for most cartridges. But perhaps its like the G36 magazine with larger dimensions than other types of mags?

Regarding the XM8, yes Jonathan is right. Larry Vickers goes into detail about the proprietary attachment system in his video with Ian from ForgottenWeapons. It was called PCAP and IIRC it was just some general or other guy in the project going "NO! I DON'T WANT PICATINNY!"

The picatinny rail under the carry handle could be because the handle is removable. There is a variant of the xm8 in the game called SCARAB which is a carbine variant that doesn't have said handle.

@Johnathan Ferguson RE: backblast from rockets/recoilless guns. I was just reminded of this, there's a guntuber that i watch by the name of Brandon Herrera ('The AK Guy' as he is called and he does a playlist called 'The Darwin Awards' in one of these videos it shows a clip of what is presumed to be a middle eastern soldier using some kind of rpg. Right as he fires it one of his partners steps into the backblast and presumably dies from it as he's not shown getting up before the clip ends.

I might be trippin but i remember a version of the XM platform that didn't have the arched carrying handle and optic section, that had a rail there. The Crysis XM-8 looks to be an almalgamation of all models of the XM-platform, so the model designers i think just put all the features present on one model, thus explaining the weirdly placed Rail. My guess is that the rail in the game version was meant to come off at one point, but was never implemented.

FY71 might be inspired by North Korean Type 88-2 rifle, which was supposed to be modernized AK-74, locally produced as Type 88. Except when it actually came out (3 years after OG Crysis), it turned out to be just AK-74 with top folding stock.

I think interior rail is there because the devs made the whole carry handle detachable for some reason. The “standard” SCAR-AB in Crysis 2 does not have the carry handle attached, making it much more like the ACR in look. This version without the handle looks really weird as the gun was clearly proportioned with the carry handle attached making the rifle look a little strange.

Got a Q for Johnathan: You mentioned back blast being very important. Im wondering if a Javelin needs little to no clear area behind due to its known mini charge before the main rocket fires. Could it even be sealed/restricted behind and still safe to operate?
@Thy_Boss
@Thy_Boss 5 ай бұрын
The backblast is from the launch of the rocket before its engine fires. It causes the same issues and needs the same consideration. Think of it this way: the Javelin's difference from earlier systems comes after-not before or during-the stage that makes backblast a concern.
