Great overview and I appreciate that you recognize where some choices are simply done as gameplay tradeoffs. 5.56x45mm NATO vs. .223 Rem is a perfect example. If they were functionally identical in-game, there'd be no reason to have them both in game. We often offered an "underpowered" round so players could spend less money/get less wear/etc. All of the .357 Mags can fire .38 Special, all of the 5.56mm guns can shoot .223, etc. With semi-autos like the 9mm pistol, we couldn't really do reload animation variants, so we had to handle the standard case where the mag empties, the chamber is clear, and the slide locks back, but that ALSO has to work in a case where you reload with a round in the chamber and the slide is forward/hammer back. With the .357 Mag revolver, the left hand actually does push the extractor rod with each round -- yet another feat of incredible dexterity, but done to try to blend some realism with speed. The Laser RCW shared firing animations with other automatic rifles, so we had recoil even though it makes no sense for a laser weapon. On some things, like the machinegun, we just didn't have time to iterate on/design iron sights that were screwed up. Thanks again!

He actually hit the nail on the head with the plasma discussion there. In the Fallout universe, they just discovered the plasma stuff before the war as he said. The Laser RCW (the laser SMG) has the drum because of how it operates, "RCW" means "Rapid Capacitor Weapon" and the capacitors actually rotate inside that drum, so the mechanism always has a charged capacitor on the way, sort of like how a Gatling's barrel cluster works, which is also how the Gatling Laser works
@InchonDM2 жыл бұрын
This is correct, though I'd argue it's only half of the reason. The other half of the reason is that Fallout's USA is this hellish blur of some of the worst parts of the USA from the 50's and 60's Cold War era that the game's retrofuturism hails from, and one of the things about that USA was being obsessed with image and with its own past self. The RCW probably could have been visually designed differently, but the little details on it that would be completely nonfunctional on a weapon of this type tell you that it was deliberately designed to ape the iconic weapon, which is entirely in character with the USA of that universe.

actually it wasn't the EXPLOSIVE yield that was the problem, which iirc was 10 or 17 tons TNT?? it was the NEUTRON shower that was the problem, as that was lethal to 500 yards actually, that was the real point of the weapon they didn't want folk to realize: it was an actual "neutron bomb" (by default not exactly by advanced design, while later actual neutron bombs were designed but they were still meant to take out armoured brigades, NOT cities) it would irradiate tank crews, killing the poor berks through the hull causing radiation sickness, and those quite close, within 150 metres would be almost instantly incapacitated as the dose would be so extreme :( AND convert enough of the hull into radioactive isotopes the vehicle would be dangerously radioactive itself and then you had the fallout...

I actually remember the justification for the Gauss rifle from way back when Bethesda added it in the first FO3 dlc. The magazine on the right hand side is supposed to hold a functionally infinite pile of 2mm projectiles, whilst the microfusion battery that the player 'reloads' is what powers the magnets that propel the rounds. They designed it that way because a) whilst Gauss weapons in FO1/2 were established as using 2mm ammo, they were uncertain about how the engine would handle adding a new ammunition type through DLC, so they decided to switch it to the existing microfusion cells from the base game and b) they wanted to fill the niche of a slow firing but high damage energy sniper, and the microfusion cell ammunition provided a thin pretext to classify it as such. This is just my speculation, but I also suspect the 5mm ammunition for the minigun was a game balancing decision, the high rate of fire means that the player needs a ton of ammo for it (and ammo scavenging/management is in theory a core mechanic of Fallout). This means a lot of 5mm ammo has to spawn in the world to be looted (much more than ammo from lower rate of fire weapons). If the minigun used 5.56, then there would need to be a similarly high spawn rate, but since assault rifles also use 5.56, this would strongly buff assault rifles. Since you'd always be overflowing with ammo for them, and each round would have higher damage/price of round ratio coming out of an assault rifle too.
@PrismariLaura3 жыл бұрын
I never read any official material on weapon design in fallout, but that's how I read the Gauss functioning as well. You don't load ammo, you load batteries (through the incredibly powerful microfusion cells), and fire a (superheated? that could account for the blue blast on impact) small projectile. My headcanon is that the projectile is made out of steel, as it's magnetic, turns blue when (super)heated, and has a similar enough mass to lead to be used as projectile. It checks almost all boxes for how the Gauss rifle works (minus the projectile exploding instead of penetrating the target)

One interesting thing that I was a little surprised Johnathan failed to notice about the Gauss Rifle was the fact that it was actually based on a real-world firearm! The entire gun, excluding the sci-fi bits and some other small details, is actually based on the Finnish L-39 AT rifle. The jamming animation even has the player rotate the cocking handle, which is specifically like that on the real gun due to the heavy amount of pressure you'd need to exert on the spring in the first place to pull the bolt straight back. Good video though-- I really hope Johnathan considers making his own channel, since I'd love to see this kind of content on a regular basis.

@cheesebucket1422 жыл бұрын
IT's both. the 2mm EC mags used for gauss rifles in earlier fallout games and 4/76 is described as a magazine and battery pack combined.
@aeureus2 жыл бұрын
@@cheesebucket142 but you're loading a microfusion cell into it; microf's have power, lots of it, but no physical 'ammunition rounds'. So the gun itself just loads powercells to power the mag-coils. Based off the fact is uses energy weapons skill and has a blue energy corona on impact, it may be plausable that the gun instead fires small but intense energy packets; which may be an explanation for using microfusion but no physical rounds. Also, this is the older variant from prewar anchorage. There is newer variant in fo4 time that uses 2mm EC.
@oco87832 жыл бұрын
@@aeureus It does actually fire physical rounds. In VATS you can see underneath the blue effect it fires metal projectiles
@fckgooogle1000x Жыл бұрын
In lore I think that this Gauss rifle model uses two ammo types: Microfusion cells which power the weapon, Then some electromagnetic cartridge (probably 2mm) as the projectile itself. When this Gauss rifle was originally added to Fallout 3 by DLC, the developers didn't want to add a separate ammo type just for the Gauss which would've probably been 2mm so they settled in having it functionally utilize microfusion cells too so that it could be classed as an energy weapon for those types of players
@resm-oe9ji Жыл бұрын
If you look at the model for the gauss rifle, it has a large magazine hanging out on the right side of the gun. My guess is that that is where the 2mm ammo is. Since 2mm is small, you can pack many rounds into the magazine and not worry about reloading often.

Light actually does have momentum, meaning that in theory it could induce recoil (or push something that it hits). It's just that the number would be so small you wouldn't notice it at this scale; certainly much less recoil than is shown in the laser weapons. Despite having no mass, photons do have momentum of p = E/c, with p being momentum, E being the photon's total energy, and c being the speed of light.

The Gauss Rifle is actually a projectile weapon, I don't remember exactly where it is stated (might be in the Prima Official Game Guide) but the large magazine on the right side of the gun is pre-loaded with 2mm bearings, which are fired using the energy of the microfusion cell you reload with. So the ammo itself is already magically in the gun, and the "ammo" you use is only to power the coils.
@geraltofrivia3233 жыл бұрын
Just correcting a few misconceptions: The laser RCW is an early version of the gatling laser, the drum mag is actually a system of capacitors that spins and discharges, getting around the slow charge rate and giving the weapon it's high fire rate that a single-capacitor laser rifle couldn't achieve. It was designed after the thompson to give soldiers a familiar laser weapon. The sawed-off shotgun IS cut down, it's based off of the double-barrel full-length shotgun from Point Lookout in Fallout 3. Most weapons and mods DIDN'T come from prewar, they were made by the Gunrunners, whose main factory is right outside of the Strip. They have professional machining tools. The gauss rifle uses a battery, the thing that you reload, and the box mag on the right side holds the spikes.
