Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the iconic weaponry of Call of Duty: WW2, including the M1 Garand - complete with its iconic ‘ping’ sound, the Russian PPSh-41 submachine gun, and the German STG44 Assault Rifle.
Call of Duty: WW2 saw the COD franchise return to the Second World War with a ‘boots on the ground’ shooter experience, which was full to the brim with period WW2 guns like the American Thompson M1A1, the German MP40, and the Mauser C96 semi-automatic pistol.
In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weapons of Call of Duty: WW2, and compares their in-game depictions against their real-world counterparts.

Personally having been to the US myself on one occasion in an open carry state I found it to be a very unsettling experience. I don’t believe that people should be able to own firearms (unless there is a substantial reason for a person to own one) the cost of human life lost due to their accessibility far outweighs the freedom of owning such weapons. That’s not to say I don’t think guns aren’t interesting, but personally I’ve never had any ambition of owning one even if I could.

Yes, I was surprised he missed that. The game shows the correct reload. All the select-fire open-bolt Thompsons feature a "sear trip" which disconnects the trigger and leaves the bolt locked to the rear. It is activated by the follower of an empty stick mag. So, when I first played the game, I found it odd that the ppsh was in Normandy, but I did some research and found that when a bunch of eastern front units were transferred too the western front in 1943(i think), they took the ppsh they had captured and rechambered them to 9mm parabellum( used in luger, p38s mp 40s and is one of the most common pistol calibers today) and toom them with them to France
@comeatmebro3229
@comeatmebro3229 7 ай бұрын
yes and no, some PPSh were rechambered for 9mm (MP 41(r)) but most of them were not (MP 717(r)) , the Germans captured so many PPSH throughout the war that they were widely distributed and even units who did not serve on the eastern front were issued them. these unaltered versions of the gun were issued with 7.63×25mm Mauser ammunition instead of the soviet Soviet 7.62x25mm. So yes contrary to popular belief the PPSH was actually reletively common on the western front so the game in this isntance is accurate (they also didn't use the drum mag on the western front due the the ammo they needed to use)

The Nambu Type II is depicted with a charging handle to the right side of the weapon that does not exist in reality; in reality, the Type II operated on a principle similar to the Gustloff Volkssturmgewehr, where the entire front section of the gun and the barrel shroud would recoil when firing (which too is not depicted in-game). The actual charging handle is the tab extended to the left side of the weapon (which would pull back the entire barrel shroud when pulled), depicted as a sling mount in-game.

With regards to the PPsh-41, I have heard an interesting account of some Allied troops encountering this weapon in the possession of German troops in Normandy, likely captured on the Eastern front. An American paratrooper by the name of Richard Ladd (502nd PIR, 101st Airborne) managed to recover a PPsh-41 from a German supply wagon (having lost his own weapon previously) in the early hours of June 6th, and shortly after used it to kill three German soldiers in a brief firefight. Obviously such a weapon would not have been used very commonly (at least not as depicted in COD: WW2), but I guess there is a *slight* historical basis for such a thing. Just an interesting tidbit I thought I would share.

The issue of peep sights on game guns not accurately showing the pinhole effect is one I remember cropping up in the mid 2000s as, for whatever reason, 2d overlays in ADS mode fell out of vogue and fully 3d ADS became popular. I had always argued that the hybrid 2d rear sights x 3d front sights was best, because a 2d overlay could be blurred to replicate the eye’s blurring of the foreground when using iron sights, while games at that time could not replicate that in 3d. I remember America’s Army having fully 2d sights for the M16 and fully 3d sights on the M4 and much preferring the M16’s. Also in the Forgotten Hope 2 mod for Battlefield 2, there was some debate because partway through development, the devs decided to switch from hybrid to fully 3d sights. This particularly affected the Thompson, because as I recall the size of the peep hole was originally modeled life size which made the ADS in full 3d almost unusable. Their solution, like COD, was simply to make the peep hole bigger. Most games really never took the time to get iron sights right, but it’s largely a moot point today because every game, even BATTLEFIELD 1 set in the bloody First World War, mostly use optical sights.
