If someone can't make a correct decision very quickly and under stress then he/she should not be an armed police officer. In most parts of the world ALL police officers are routinely armed, and are expected to be competent and professional. Here in the UK someone could even (very easily) remain in the police while not carrying a weapon.

IN 2017 near heathrow, an burgler was shot dead by a home owner , he shot through his front door with a shotgun killing him. the crown prosecutor for london west, stated it was lawful self defence. Although he did face a charge for not having a permit for his shotgun thus case law has been settled a long time about using lethal force , which applies to both citizens and police alike. its basically a liberal london district crown prosecutor who wanted this copper indicted

Firearms officers must have rules of engagement. Their selection and training would have ensured only the most competent and experienced officers would give a high level of confidence that even it a split second officers can follow the rules of engagement. That's not to suggest accidents don't happen and there maybe a possibility of an officer hasn't followed the rules of engagement and as with all weapons discharged by officers an investigation will be opened. What is very wrong is the PM and Home Secretary publicly voicing their opinion about a future trial. It probably goes against the rules of MPs and it may directly impact on the trial before it's begun. Police officers deserve our respect, but there has to be checks to ensure the police can't do anything they want, they must also adhere to the law.

@andywilliams7323
@andywilliams7323 Жыл бұрын
That is not what he was saying at all. He was not saying legal or investigative oversight should be reduced. He was saying that Police Officers should not face prosecution charges for making mistakes, the same way Doctors and Nurses don't face prosecution charges for making mistakes. However, Doctors and Nurses do face prosecution charges when they make deliberate malicious acts. The same way Police Officers such as Couzens and Carrick faced prosecution charges for their deliberate and malicious acts. A deliberate malicious act and a mistake are not the same thing.

The buck shouldn't ever stop with a firearms officer who is acting under orders and given permission to fire if he/she thinks they need to. The buck stops with their commanding officer and the intelligence fed to them that forms that decision. A firearms officer only controls the trigger, not the decision making that put them in that life threatening situation in the first place. It's just passing blame.

@@michaelwallder6437 But they don’t leave the police station armed up UNLESS they have been told to do so by the commanding officer and given the correct target to shoot. If they haven’t been given the correct target it isn’t their fault is it if an innocent is killed? They don’t just select a random person who sort of fits a description then lets loose. Even once on site they cannot shoot unless given the go ahead. It isn’t the Wild West. Like I said do some research.

When you are a firearms officer human error could result in you shooting and killing someone. But what about if you're a detective responsible for investigating crime? What if, for example, you spend 5 years investigating the Lucy Letby case and you get it wrong early on. What if confirmation bias causes you to get entrenched in your belief that a young nurse is responsible, and you spend 5 years cherry picking circumstantial evidence to frame her? I would say that if Lucy Letby is innocent (as many now think) the harm done to her is wose than shooting and killing. It's beyond imaginable torture. So should those officer also be penalized for their mistakes? I don't think anyone - member of the public or professional - should ever be criminalized for making a mistake. I'm always horrified by cases in the US where loving mums are convicted of murder when they mistakenly leave their kids in hot cars to die. Clearly it's the last thing a mum would want to do - so why on earth put them in prison? We're copying america too much. They've always been barbaric over such things. I'm sure it used to be accepted that honest mistakes happened - driving mistakes that cost lives for example. But now everything is criminalized. To what purpose?
@stephengillott9435

Looking at all the responses it would seem that if intelligence says you have a gun you will be killed and that has happened numerous times. I watched the TV last night showing police training where they stormed a building and immediately opened fire. What you do in training you will do in real life as that is what you were trained to do. Carrying a gun comes with great responsibility and the general public are innocent until you SEE they are not.

15 weeks for the standard-level firearms police officer is fine and average for most of the world. Continuous training and re-assessment is also carried out throughout the officer's career as a firearms officer. UK armed officers are among the best trained on firearms in the world. In contrast, in the USA, newly recruited Police Officers only spend about 4-6 weeks on firearms training and don't receive any further training or reassessment throughout their career.
