In central Ohio we are trained to use the haligan as the hook and tie a clove hitch around the haligan

We also teach this technique as well as using a 6 foot hook. The LT doing the drill is showing a new rookie, what he is carrying and how he would execute a self rescue if condition called for it. Many styles and ways to do it, what’s important is that your training for it. And your doing it in a controlled environment with safety’s in place so when push comes to shove and you need to do it your prepared. Train for gains, not followers.

Huh, I was always trained to use the haligan as the hooking device and to tie a clove hitch around it. This hook looks super handy for putting in a pocket tho, in case you lose your tool and still need to get the fuck out!

Def need to check conditions , just remember if your doing this, it’s your only option and you need to get out in a hurry, do you have time to check? You might. If not, make the best with what you have, IE. Your tool. Using it as your anchor with the window. This can be done with a number of hand tools. If that’s content you would like to see just let me know.

Good thing there was only a single stud around the window. That hook wouldn’t be wide enough to get around a properly framed window the has a Jack and a King stud. Cool technique tho! We’ve never used that on my department

If you concentrate and train to pit the fire out, you won't need these unrealistic escape plans. Just keep in mind. He can't see, and the temp is 500 or more, if he has to bail.

If conditions were that bad, from that height, I could just jump out. Broken legs are better than 3rd degree burns. Or try climbing down with some of the objects protruding off of the building.

At my department the plan is that you would use one leg and one arm to hang out the window until somebody comes and puts a ladder under you. This is cool but for a situation this rare carrying extra gear isn’t that practical.

Yeah, we are a very small department, at the most our first alarm fire is only 15 firefighters and a Battalion chief. That ladder might not always be there. My bailout kit will be. You don’t think you need it till you need it.

Complete daylight, no smoke, no radio traffic, no barriers in the room, no casualties, no one pulling the hose, no brothers behind or ahead of you, not using the Scott pack, physically assisted by others. You're going to kill people with this level of incompetence.

Yeah I definitely agree there are a ton of conditions missing in this short we were trying out that new hook that is being used by the LT. Thanks you for pointing that out. Condition can always change rapidly and when it’s time for real when your life depends on it you need to have more than a “know how”. It honestly needs to be Muscle memory. This is why we do things consecutively over and over so when we need to bail, our body knows the motions when our brain is in the “Fog of War”
