I grew up with my Dad who worked long hours - he would leave the house before I woke up and would get home after my bedtime. I only saw him during the weekends or if I stayed up a little longer - he would stand in the doorway of my bedroom and whisper good night. One birthday, I was in bed and he came home late, he came into my room and whispered the words to Happy Birthday and cried. When people think of poverty, they think of lack of food, unable to pay bills but for me, most importantly what I lacked was the time with my Dad. I would rather skip a meal or two so I can have more time with my Dad.

Where do you think that money comes from? Taxpayers, Zippy. The same people in this video who claim to not being able to make it. We need to tax the upper 10% more, as they are the ones taking home most of the money, owning most of the wealth and they are the ones making the rules and have the power to change rules to benefit themselves. We do not do it for the money but that is a stupid comment. Alot of us FFs only are making 8.00-9.50 an hour, less than 30,000 a year. Thats piss money dude. We deserve a livable pay at-least. Its sad whenever best-buy workers and grocery store workers make more then us whenever our job is extremely stressful and rough. Without people loving the job you have no Emergency Service workers because most people do not want to do what we do for such shit pay, let alone the job at all no matter the pay. A college degree doesn't make someone better then us, that's just a different career path, our job is just as important as anyone else. We deserve a pay that we can at-least somewhat support a family without having to work 2 ful-time jobs and a part-time job. I love my job and do not expect to get tons of money from it. No one is asking for hand-outs, I earn my damn pay. We just want a livable wage, that isn't much too ask for. You take Emergency Service for granted just like the politicians.

The living cost is different for every state. I live in the 14th poorest in the country. I make 10.50 and hour my husband makes 8.25. We struggle every month. We have a fixed budget that we don't mess with. We never spend frivolously. I had to drop out of school to support myself because the student debt just wasn't worth it. Right now we have an apartment and fulltime jobs. Neither us can afford a car, healthcare, or school. We commute via bus or walking to and from work. We bust our ass to make ends meet. Its not that people are lazy or don't have a degree thats holding them back. Its the fact that living cost is to high in many states. There are far more impoverished people and middle class than there ars upper class in this country. Peopls act like a degree makes everything better or that poverty must be the persons fault. I work with people who have degrees and work at fast food jobs due to debt, and most people effected by poverty have no help to get out of it they work 2-3 jobs to try and get screwed out of most of their money through bills, hospital bills, and life in general. Point is you can work your ass off be doing everything right and still not be able to make it. Instead of judging people in these situations walk a mile in their shoes first.

Blob Monster, it has nothing to do with the “piece of paper” itself, but it has everything to do with what the “piece of paper” represents, in that a person is willing to educate themselves (on whatever topic), and investing time and resources into something that does not guarantee future employment or increase in wages. That “piece of paper” that you are referring to shows employers that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get yours. An employer will most likely not care about experience and no education (in your case) or education and no experience (in someone else’s case). But to an employer, it shows what you’re willing to go through to improve, it shows that you’re willing to sacrifice on your own to get to a better place. And like he said, is someone who already has experience but no education really willing to go back to school or formal training to improve? No, most likely not.
@user-xc4vi5py5p4 жыл бұрын
Blob Monster No, I am 23, educated, and about 20-30 years more mature for my age. I have two undergraduate degrees, and an MBA, I have job offers out the ass all the time for jobs that pay six figures, and realize that I’m only going to continue to make that kind of money and more, by doing what I’ve been doing, which is what I stated previously, and keeping at it. I never once said anything about self teaching, but it falls under the same category as experience... There’s no way to prove that you sat through 120 credit hours worth of “self teaching” or if you just watched “enough to get by”, which leads me back to my previous point, that the “piece of paper” proves that you’re willing to go the extra mile. That thought process from “back in day” is not wrong, the reasons for college education or formal job training are different than they are today, before it was to prove that you know the material that you are apply that knowledge to. Today that college degree says that you are willing to do so much more than what the job responsibilities say. Not sure why you think everyone needs to have 50k in debt, when you could do in state schools and realize what your budget allows. The vast majority of employers, as I said previously don’t care where you got your degree so long as you got one. It’s also more of a question of work ethic, if you had to interview yourself (whenever you first became employed), would you take the kid fresh out of college who has shown that they are willing to go the extra mile, and most likely do it for less money and possibly have more insight to contribute or the person that has the exact same knowledge level as the kid but has specific salary requirements, and commitments to his family/friends/organization and isn’t willing to improve/better their knowledge base? It’s a very simple choice for any business.
@user-xc4vi5py5p4 жыл бұрын
Blob Monster Business (not sales as I’m not sure if that’s what you meant by “burn” by the time I’m 50), again, not saying that the actual degree is what to look for, it’s what the degree represents, because you wouldn’t have an interview with someone who didn’t know the information the degree is just the icing on the cake. Didn’t say the degree is gonna save me, it just opens doors. Sure you may have family that don’t have higher education/chose not do higher education, but your family (as well as some of my family, of whom are in similar situations to what you described) are the outliers and not the norm. Many deviations past the mean. And good for them for making that kind of money with that little input (your family and mine), but those kind of opportunities are few and far between, and those kind of opportunities are disappearing and won’t be around for ever.

I feel for these people but honestly... Why the hell do you need a 75,000 dollar college education to be a fire fighter and a paramedic? At the most all you need are a couple community college courses that would cost you a few grand tops. It's mostly an experience based thing. I have a close friend who is a firefighter and a paramedic.

Having a university degree is a pre-requisite in Australia to be a paramedic. Prior to that (about 15 years ago), the ambulance service put you through a diploma of health science (they paid for it too). Management realised that too many people were struggling to pass (despite having passed the recruitment screening process with exams like maths, English, spacial relations, problem solving etc.). It was costing about $120,000 over a three year period to train each student paramedic to qualified status. Those who struggled and didn't pass after the three years were sacked or put into non-emergency patient transport. With so much money being lost, they decided to employ only those who already had the qualifications (and put them through another year as an intern). I don't know of any community colleges you can attend where you graduate knowing 60 drugs off by heart, A&P down to cellular level, pathophysiology for dozens and dozens of medical conditions, 12 lead ECG rhythm recognition and so on. If being a paramedic was an 'experienced based career", you'd have your head in the textbooks on every day off just to learn what they don't teach you on the road. I'd often say to my interns that what you learn in university is the science of paramedicine, the on road component is when you turn that science into an art. The biggest evolution EMS is making (at least in Australia) is moving on from protocols and referring to cheat sheets for 10 or so drugs, 3 lead ECGs and Medical consults of the 1980s and 1990s to independent clinical judgement skills to plan patient management and to be able to rattle off everything about 60+ drugs verbatim.

+Don Coleman New York City's FDNY, one of the most respected first responder agencies in the world, provides in-house training and only requires a high school diploma. $75,000 in student loans for that career is outrageous. We don't even know what his (or her) major was.
@doncoleman49386 жыл бұрын
KiloByte I guess it all comes down to how well trained the governing bodies want their EMS staff to be, and whether they will pay staff accordingly. I have no idea on the training program of BLS and ALS staff in the US, but would be keen to see what's in the 1200-1800 hour paramedic courses mentioned on the web (a 45 week course seems very short). I had a look at emttrainingbase.com, and they mention about US paramedics having a median wage of $17/hour (and overtime ranging from $17.85-$35.14/hour-which I can't understand how Americans calculate overtime-our overtime is minimum 2x)). $17/hr for a US paramedic as opposed to $45 for an Australian paramedic is quite a difference (costs of living are fairly similar). For us old farts with a diploma who got our degree in paramedicine, it was tax deductable, so essentially free. What's the difference between BLS and ALS (we only have advanced care and critical care)? Are the wages for US paramedics on the website realistic? They seem ridiculously low compared to $80-120k/year for Australian paramedics.

I think his house is the real problem. That and his college debt. State college loan payments last 10 years, so he should be seeing the end of the tunnel on that one. If you are really low income, the state can lower the payments and do a write off after 10 years. (Yes they can. My nephew will end up paying only the amount of the loan, not interest.) But I don't think he qualifies as low income. The state doesn't care about high mortgages and car payments. They figure that is a problem you made for yourself.

You know what pisses me off? A hard-working family man like Chris here is working essential jobs and barely is getting by supporting his family. But yet Charli and Dixie D’Amelio make loads of money uploading videos on the internet and mocking Walmart workers. I live in a world where some people literally don’t have to work hard because everything was given to them, whereas other individuals have to work every blood, sweat and teardrop of their body throughout their whole life just to survive.
