I wish there was a way to test for empathy. I’ve seen guys who can throw up a 35’ way faster than I ever could but get angry with people who call for a water leak not realizing it’s truly distressing them that half of their house is ruined.

Hey there. Great video, sound advice. I’ve been a career Firefighter/Paramedic for 15 years and I think empathy is one of the hardest things to hold on to. It’s very easy to become callous and cold. I have to remind myself often that a little bit of compassion goes a long way, even if the nature of the call is ridiculous. Anyways, great channel. Keep up the good work.

I had the great honor of being asked by our chief to accompany him to a nearby pre school in our area. I donned an airpak/ scba, and crawled towards to young class, showing them what to expect if they ever had a fire at home. Afterwards, we showed them our trucks, and allowed them to sit in the crew seats. Before they left us , a young gentleman, probably five years old, put his arms out to hug me. I thought this old Marine was going to burst into tears. Then his entire class hugged all the firefighters there.

Those are seven good traits to have for a strong foundation. I would also add... to learn the position above yours, be able to teach someone or a group, be willing to set the example and work ethic (especially if you're an officer), never stop your learning process and be able to do something (a significant contribution) that leaves the department in a better position than when you hired on. Those traits carried me through a 37 yr career.

Good shit bro, just adding like usual cause that's what I do 🤷‍♂️. "Knowledge is power, GI JOE!" 1.Stay sober. It's a horrible hole you will fall into. I've seen alcohol destroy fire fighters lives because they try and drink away the job off the clock. If you do drink, pay attention to how much. Portion control saves marriages and jobs. 2. You will get constantly the same questions from the public, Everytime, be kind about it. Yes it gets annoying, but it is new to them. We have a image of being reliable and kind and caring, don't break that. 3. Our dark humor isn't for everyone. A person's joke about someone being tossed into the air into a tree can bother people a lot. People will be offended by our talk, pay attention to your surroundings. 4. Muscle memory, get hands on everything. He brings up knowledge and this goes with that. Every single thing you touch should feel like you never put it down. From a K12 to a screw driver.

I've got 2 brand new bottles of booze, and I've only ever touched it once. (The day I turned 21 in July). I don't really have an interest in alcohol unless it t is something I like the taste of, and even then, I'll only ever touch it once in a blue moon. 1. I ain't missing a call because I decided to have a small drink. 2. Family history of alcoholism, so I rarely drink so as to avoid developing that issue

I would add one more the ability to keep calm and levelheaded under the most stressful times. You can’t be the type of person like my wife that goes 0 to100 in a millisecond! Lol I need to be able to handle graveyard humor!

(pointing as his heart) ...is THIS ONE." - Career Fireman Eddie Ryan in the 1970's said that. That quote from Eddie sums up the key difference between "good" and "GREAT" firemen. There are plenty of people on the job who are smart, open minded, patient, physically fit, have empathy, and "know their job". Those traits make them great PEOPLE, and great co-workers.... and can apply to being a good accountant, gym teacher, or public relations officer.....but those are not attributes that separate a great Fireman from the rest. At least not in the primary function of the job as summed up in Eddie's quote.
