Firefighters strike over ‘reckless renewable expansion’

The CFA have announced they will “refuse to fight fires” on land hosting high voltage transmission lines, either solar or wind farm, says Sky News host Steve Price.
Mr Price says this move is over the CFA calling out the Victorian state government’s “reckless renewable expansion”.
“According to the Herald Sun, at least 24 brigades will take what amounts to a fire fighting boycott around such projects with most covering acreage hosting the giant NSW-Victoria Interconnector transmission line,” he said.

Renewable energy farms are just another type of farm. Agriculture has changed a lot of the land already. Why is a sheep farm more important than a solar farm? (Both can be done in the same place by the way...)

@@zen1647you can’t feed the population on broken windmills and busted solar panels. They are not fit for purpose. Neither were designed to be “on the grid”. They were designed for remote operation backed by a diesel or petrol generator far from the grid. They are not solar “farms” they are industrial power generation. Big difference Both cannot exist on the same piece of land.

@@zen1647 solar farms are being built on prime farming land. Wind turbines are being built by destroying tens of thousands of tree essential for the environment. Nuclear takes up very little land. I was not in favour of Nuclear, however, l would rather not have our beautiful landscape and oceans turned into visual pollution. You then have the problem of end of use. Where do you dump tens of thousands of wind turbines and solar panels? I am all for a mix of sensible power solutions.

@@zen1647 Lol....A farm grows food which one can eat. Solar and windmills create toxic pollution to the surrounding land and to water under the ground. Wind and solar are now proven to be unsuitable for energy requirements in the modern world. Big difference, one works, the other doesn't. Stop trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear....

It does not seem to bother these urban green warriors that these wind turbines in the massive offshore wind farm have to be hammered more than 30 meters into the sea bed by huge pile drivers then every single one of them must be connected to the next turbine by heavy duty sea water proof insulated electrical cables draped across the ocean floor then transmitted back to shore by another heavier duty cable laid across the ocean floor. You cannot tell me these operations and infrastructure will not cause massive disruption and damage to sea life and the seascape ....that is just plain impossible It is an ecological disaster to provide extremely expensive, unreliable intermittent power subsidized by AUSTRALIAN taxpayers

By far the deadliest bushfire on Black Saturday in Victoria (the Kilmore fire) was sparked off by a faulty powerline transformer which failed when the lines began clashing in gale force winds in extreme heat just before midday. It was a traditional powerline that was supplying traditional coal-fired power. The faulty transformer had been reported to the power company prior to Black Saturday 2009.

In the land of red dust, under southern skies wide, Where the sun’s harsh glare and the winds abide, A cry arises, not of joy but of plight, From those who battle flames in the dead of night. Firefighters, the brave, their hearts made of steel, Now stand in protest, their anger revealed. Not against nature’s wrath or the inferno's embrace, But against man’s decisions, an industrial disgrace. They strike against fields of solar and wind, Planted with haste, with foresight thinned. "Reckless!" they cry, as turbines whir, And solar panels stretch like an armored spur. In the name of green, lands are defiled, Safety forsaken, progress run wild. The balance is tipped, nature's ignored, In pursuit of profit, the warnings deplored. Once guardians of the land, now they contest, Policies born of shortsighted zest. They see the fires that future holds, In landscapes transformed, the nightmare unfolds. Renewables, they agree, are not the foe, But the reckless expansion, a lethal woe. Safety neglected in the green gold rush, Leaving forests and fields vulnerable, lush. Their hoses now hang, their helmets set down, They march through the cities, through each burning town. For every turbine erected, a risk unaddressed, Every solar field sown, another distress. "Listen!" they plead, to those in their towers, "Safety must lead, in these critical hours. Renewables can save, if wisely deployed, Not as reckless ambitions, or nature destroyed." Australia's heart beats with a fiery refrain, A warning ignited from the firefighters' pain. In the quest for green, do not forsake, The land and its guardians, for the future's sake. OddBall

A solar panel will last probably 50+ years. A coal plant will replace every moving part at least once within 20yrs. Its only the land and building which last 50+ years. Perhaps time you caught up with the real world and then you will understand that a solar panel will outlast a coal plant by a long time. Its simply because the solar panel has NO moving parts. We install Solar Panels because they work and are low cost to run and last a very long time.

This is all the result of a Fire that the CFS volunteers tried to fight in country South Australia a few months ago. The Fire was caused by a Windmill turbine....one of the big ones, catching fire and lighting the surrounding scrub and all. It burnt 60+ or so Hectares of rural land until it was under control...and they had to prevent the other windmills from catching alight. It was a great idea on paper, but these things are not suitable for this country. Why smaller domestic ones for each house are not promoted, I don't know.

Soon after the Indigenous Lands act will over rule ownership of the land and they can, whilst not criminally take the land. I heard that lithium produces it's own oxygen is why one can't put out a lithium fire so would be the biggest why, in modern history is why EV cars keep burning under water. Why would they push EV cars? & they're so expensive.

More over by the time a Wind Turbine has been Manufactured, Transported, and erected it cannot and will not pay for itself in its life time without subsidization and that Information was imparted to me by and Electrical technician who works on Wind Turbines!!!!! FACT

Total rubbish and why would you believe a electrical technician when you can look the information up for yourself. The energy required to mine, build, ship and install a Wind Turbine will be repaid in less than 2 years with ZERO subsidy. The world is not stupid. We build them because they work and deliver low cost electricity.

I certainly hope not. They're a bloody disaster, but I'm sure the LNP is a hell of a lot better.

Renewables require 24/7 backup as they are inherently likely to produce no power indiscriminately according to the weather through lack of sunlight and SUFFICIENT wind. So running two forms of power production instead of just one. Makes perfect sense to Politicians.
