One of the great touches of this show is the female characters are still feminine without any attempt at sexualizing them. Inara never wears revealing outfits, it's all dresses and elegance. Zoe dresses like a soldier but there is no mistaking her femininity. Kaylee dresses like a mechanic and gets engine grease all over herself but there is no detraction from her innocent girlhood. Every woman on this show is a perfect balance. Also a great contrast to the men.

"You're on my crew. Why are we still talking about this?" is probably my most favourite of Mal's lines. It shows us exactly what kind of person he is. He's slow to trust, but once he lets you into the circle, he will protect you to the end of the Universe. That is, assuming you don't betray him too badly... Also, it's not a firefly reaction without someone saying "Is that Zac Efron?" ideally with an excess of incredulity.

When trying to understand why Simon's parents bailed on him, we need to remember that the Alliance is a surveliance state. The parents knew that getting on the wrong side of the establishment (getting things on their permanent record) meant that all their comfort, wealth, and position could be snatched away. They couldn't let themselves believe something was happening to River, because then their options would be either 1) be the kind of parents that let something bad happen to your daughter or 2) fight the powers that be and lose everything. It is a glimpse of why the Indepenants wanted to be free.

They also probably don't believe that such a thing could happen. Those that are privileged tend to not understand or believe that bad things happen. Especially to those who are less privileged.

A couple of thoughts that occurred to me as I was watching your reaction. First -- Funny thing is that I've watched the entire series at least 10 times and probably a dozen more reactions and this is the first time this thought has come to me. Watching River dance, took me back to River's description of the cows -- they forgot who they were until they got outside and saw the sky, then they became cows again. River forgot who she was while she was held by the alliance and to some degree while on Serenity. Then she got out in the open and danced -- for a few minutes, she knew who she was again. And you could see it in her smile. Second -- You are the first to get Mal (almost) right when he told Simon that the reason he came to the rescue was that Simon is a member of the crew. You commented that that was enough of a reason. With that, you hit Mal's rationale squarely on the head. Mal has a military history and is currently Captain of the ship. That means that everyone on that ship is completely his responsibility. His decisions have nothing to do with who he likes or dislikes, they are made in the best interests of the ship and its crew. Once the ship is secured, ensuring that his crew is OK is the first priority. Thus, get care for Book then go get Simon and River. Doesn't matter how he feels about them, they will be cared for as part of his crew.
@AngeloBarovierSD Жыл бұрын
Aye aye, Cap'n Tightpants. That'd be what they call a bullseye on that analysis. Some see their authority as a matter of power and control. Others see it as a responsibility. Would that our world was filled with the latter and not the former.

@@kirkdarling4120 And that's another reason why we get along! I've never been enlisted but I did take cadet leadership courses in HS. That's probably where I got the exact same phrase. Honestly, it was one of the most impactful courses I ever took. The whole mentality has not only felt _right,_ it has also proven its worth. And when I see it in others, I'll happily follow them into the mix. Few things in life feel as good as knowing I'm in the care of a competent, dutiful, and honorable leader in pursuit of a worthy collective goal. Feels like home.

@SarahMaeBea Жыл бұрын
Wow I've watched this show so many times, and I've never thought to compare the "I won't come for you" line and "you're on my crew" line, but of course that contrast was intentional to show Mal's character and give Simon a reason to call Serenity home. I like that River stole the roll of Jayne's plate, like a little sister would tease an older brother. The can label thing will come back up again... River hearing noises has nothing to do with being in space - remember she was hearing the ghosts from the crippled ship before they docked with it... Excellent observation at the start. This show is all about the characters, not the ships. The rough translation of River's Mandarin swear at Mal in the beginning is basically "Stupid son of a drooling whore and a monkey". Easily one of my favorites in the series, with only one other that tops it and I'll point that one out when we get to it next episode. One of my favorite friendships in the show is definitely Kaylee and Inara. They have that loving sister feel with how they talk to each other and it's just adorable. Likewise the love between Simon and Mal is just as incredible. Simon gave up everything for his sister and will do anything for her. This episode showing Book's ident card getting the crew permission for Alliance medical care brings up the question of what exactly is Book? Think back to some of the previous episodes. Book knew an awful lot about Niska and the type of man he is, a little odd for a priest. Book's past is one of the show's best mysteries. Mal and Zoe's back and forth during the rescue wound up naming a trope after their lines. "Looks like we got here in the nick of time. What's that make us?" "Big damn heroes, sir!" "Ain't we just?" Ever since then, the dramatic rescue of a character or characters showing up to save the day right at the last second has become known as the Big Damn Hero moment, named for Mal and Zoe's rescue here. It also serves as something of a catchphrase for the series, with the movie Serenity sometimes being known as the Big Damn Movie.

Nothing like those moments of all of them around that table. That's core stuff, plus the little moments with Simon holding Kaylee's chair... Also, so interesting that this show about a culture that is Chinese/American was made that long ago, and the Tams' planet and society have a Chinese social credit style system.

Thanks as always for a wonderful review. So sorry for the loss of your sister. I had one younger brother that I lost 30 years ago. I love the Simon/River dynamic. Still the best ensemble cast ever.

32:10 Guess you should be more specific. You want a big brother like Simon, lol. And honestly who wouldn't want that? River's line, "You gave up every to find me and you found me broken", is always a gut punch to me. It's the first time you realize that inspite of her erratic behavior and appearing to be lost in her own world most of the time, she really is very aware of what's going on around her and it has a deep affect on her.

A book I read had a quote that went something like this. "How do you hurt a man worse when you've taken everything away from him? Give it back to them broken."

I liked this last minute rescue episode. Which I guess is every episode. lol The next two, which I think you must have seen by now, are pretty fun ones. :)

Such a great episode. You're in for a treat with the next 4 episodes coming up. It's the strongest run of episodes in the show, and most people's favorite episode is usually one of the next 4

16:48 I always find it interesting that the lawman says "the illegal killing" of Rance Durbin. As if the killing of people by regular citizens was sometimes an approved thing in these parts.

River: "Daddy will come, and take us home..." Book: "It's GOOD to be home." Mal: "Looks like we got here just in the nick of time..." Connect the dots.

I am really excited for next weeks episode. You're going to really love it 😋. Also, Simon basically was calling Serenity a "pile of crap" in his little rant in the shop when he pissed off Kaylee. Obviously you never want to say anything bad about Serenity around Kaylee

They act just like a real family. the squabbles, jokes, acceptance, and being there for each other when they need it. It says a lot that Mal went to the Alliance to help Brook considering how he feels about them. And then, Brook pulls out the golden ticket and everything you thought you knew goes out the window.

Actually named our 3rd child Kaylee because of this show. We knew we were having a girl, but couldn't agree on a name. So she was named Kaylee Calypso.

Love your reactions and don't want to stir up anything that might be a sore spot, but I do miss the pentacle. Maybe it's the "yeah but she's our witch" that reminded me of it. But I got a pentacle my own self. Just got me thinking. It's okay though, big caffeine fan too

I'm really enjoying your reactions to Firefly. It's such a great show. You tugged at my heart when you said you lost your sister 20 years ago. I lost one of my brothers 8 years ago and it still hurts, so I understand the loss. Please keep up the great work. Your reactions are heartwarming and fun and I am enjoying the journey, very much.

Here's the thing most people just miss. Mal was a Sergeant in a long and brutal war. He did exactly what every good military leader (in this situation captain of a ship) should do. Prioritise in high stress situations. Book was dying, Simon/River were kidnapped. So 2 things to do. Save Books life or find the missing Crew members. One was way more imminent then the other, cause why would anyone kidnap people to murder them? Ergo it was the right decision to leave them behind. Had they wasted hours to find the 2, Book wouldve most likely be dead right now. They even hint at why he did that in the discussion with Wash (and now they got themself a doctor). So Mal knew that Simon was highly important for the "hill folks" and they wouldnt hurt/kill him. Only AFTER he got that information he made the decision to leave them behind... This show is just perfect, downt to the smallest little detail. It might sound harsh and wrong what Mal did to people without military background, but it just showed what a great leader Mal is. And the "Your part of my crew" is just "Nobody gets left behind" in other words... a slogan that most military is familiar with.

So many things..."Nuculus, nucleus, I have trouble with words". Seriously? My favorite, the eye roll, with the left one really going cross, while the other one kind of stays still. You are a delight. As I've said, I've seen most of the material I really do love the reactions. I'll have to wait until I actually see Quantumania to watch you though. All the best.
