Interestingly, I’ve recently found out that the marriage ceremony depicted in this episode is an actual traditional Nigerian wedding ceremony. There’s another reaction channel that I watch here on KZbin (Scene-cerely KSO) and the woman who reacts to the movies and shows is originally from Nigeria. The moment Saffron put the wreath upon Amal’s head and handed him the bowl of wine she said “Oh my God, Mal just married that girl!” And then explained how she knew that.

The show takes place in a single star system, this star system is a star cluster, of the likes of the triple star system Alpha Centauri. It consists of five main sequence stars, around which orbit seven protostars, seven gas giants, three separate asteroid belts, seventy-five planets, and one hundred forty-nine moons. Four of the main sequence stars orbit a central star, the planets around this central star are the core worlds.

I understand what you're saying, and I hate spoilers too, but would this even qualify? I don't remember them ever saying anything about that in the show. I thought that was just an extra bit of info they gave outside of the show to answer questions people had about where this all takes place. Plus, it doesn't spoil any stories that are yet to come. So, it seems like a safe bit of info to give.

I seriously doubt Joss Whedon ever put that much thought into the geography of the series. Others did that later. So far as I know the astrophysics of Firefly break down relatively quickly.

There are some deleted scenes with River for this episode in the special features. Speaking of the special features... it would be a lot of fun to see you check them out when you finish the series and movie. The gag reel is a hoot, and the interviews with the cast give you a really wonderful look behind the scenes. You might even check out a web series called 'Con Man' created by and staring Alan Tudyk (Wash). Nathan Fillion was also a driving force behind getting 'Con Man' made and has a recurring role. Most of the cast of 'Firefly' has cameo's and there are a TON of other familiar faces from the geek world. The basic synopsis is that Alan plays a guy from a failed syfy show that is now repeatedly circling the various conventions... it's more than a bit meta and very sarcastic.

No there was several Earth alliances. This star system was settled by the Sino-America (China and the US) alliance which sent generational ships. This star system contained several stars with 200 planets and moons.

Forgive me if someone already pointed this out, but Eric, you asked if Earth is included in the core worlds, and in the intro I know when Mal is talking (and it goes back and forth between Mal and Shepherd Book) he says "Here's how it is, the Earth got used up" and Shepherd Book says "We found new galaxies" saying, essentially, the other worlds had to be terraformed because Earth was useless after we used all the resources. So I would think it would mean the new worlds were in a different spot, but Earth was left alone, looked back at in anthropological reasons and things of that nature. But that is just my best guess given what they say in the intro.

My theory on the "Earth that was" is that this story takes place in the universe of BTVS, but during the events of the Frey comic book, which was set in the future. These humans live so far away from the Earth solar system though, it's become a legend.

I'll answer you the one question, as it isn't a spoiler and isn't answered in the series: Firefly takes place in ONE solar system. Just one big-ass solar system with hundreds of terraformed moons and a few Earth-sized planets. They go to the trouble of installing gravity emulators on the littler moons to make them all 1g. They ain't got starships. They came because, well..."Earth-that-was" kinda explains it all in the name. Edit: 240ldemon got it right. Multiple stars, close together. Lots of close-up solar systems, so close the distances aren't what we'd consider interstellar.

The series never did a great job of explaining its "geography." I never really grasped it until the movie, but I got the impression this wasn't a big reveal, but rather that we were supposed to know it, but it wasn't well-described across the course of the show. So consider the next paragraphs potential spoilers, but personally I think its just detailing something that wasn't made clear (but should have been) during the course of the series. First off, there is no FTL drive in the Firefly universe. They stick to the idea that you cannot go faster than light. The entire "verse" is actually a single star system, consisting of numerous terraformed planets and moons. Earth is abandoned by humanity and they've moved off to another star system and colonised it. The Alliance consists of "core" planets within the system and the fringe is the outlying worlds, with the likes of the Reavers being floating nasties out of the very edge of the system. So really, just consider that they are inside a single star system (consisting of multiple stars, planets and moons) and then treat it as an allegory to the old west. There's the "civilised areas," where they have cities and technology at its highest, then there are lots of smaller settlement that vary in degrees of civility and beyond that, there's the frontier, full of savages and scary nightmare stories.

The "Core Worlds" generally was always the Alliance Controlled worlds, kind of like The Republic in Star Wars or The Federation of Planets in Star Trek... Outside of "Alliance Space" you have the 'raggedy edge' where it's basically the old west. People make their own laws and do their own things, the fringe worlds and frontier planets, people who pushed on past the core, because as they got further out there were some worlds that didn't require terraforming, just like now we've found various "Earth-Like Planets" within our solar system that if we had faster than light travel we could theoretically colonize if we knew for a fact it could support human life. I've always believed that learning the lessons from Rome, the Alliance didn't want to spread out too far because if they tried to run too wide of an empire they'd surely fall. So mostly, they just patrol the core worlds and try to keep trouble out of their back yard, and track down any remaining rebel browncoats.
