I've always thought Inara cried because she sensed a connection between Mal and Nandi that was deeper than a simple one night stand and felt she was losing any chance she might have had with Mal. Loved Eric's reaction to the morning after scene with Mal and Inara as well as the final scene of the episode between those two characters.

I believe that Inara broke down because being with Mal was not an option on the table for her and she has such mixed feelings because she does want Nandi to be comforted but she is also feeling selfish in wanting to be with Mal as well. It goes much more beyond than her position as a Companion but because Inara was dying (confirmed as a future story) and she was trying not to have any real connections with anyone because of the pain of eventually having to say goodbye. She is drawn to Mal and, in an ideal world, she could be with him. But Fate had dealt her a terrible hand and snatched that hope of happiness from her. That is all why she broke down.

Yeah maybe Season 5 they would have hooked up. But they got their own hangups, their own shit - their own perspective on how they see each other - and where they came from. Not getting together, is true to their characters. Zoe and Wash together is great. As is Mal and Book -- the first episode, Mal wore a cross, (Serenity valley) so.... "We're not gonna die. We can't die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so very pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die. "

Sadly in the book Firefly A Celebration By Whedon there's a story that states that no matter how much they tried, they just wouldn't work as a couple. Keep in mind, Mal is at-least 70 at this point.

17:50 the Inara/Mal relationship is complicated. There's an obvious attraction there, but they both want different things from life. She did not expect to care about the people on board Serenity in the way that she does but they are mostly good and positive and they also don't tie her down. It's not explained to us why she opted to leave The comforts of The Guild and apply her trade out in the border planets. It's assumed that story was being saved for season two or later. It's clear tho from what we have in the episodes we see, that Inara wanted to be mobile, and wanted to control her clientele. She didn't pick Serenity because of its captain. Quite the opposite. It seemed to me she had negotiated with far worse, and Mal was more agreeable and consenting than most, but promised to honor a business relationship and nothing more. There would be no demanding she service his crew, for example. That was made very clear in Out of Gas. She had certain terms and conditions and he agreed to them. He may have simply been the only one she found who would agree. Most of the others probably didn't see the point of transporting a whore if she wasn't going to put out. At least Mal was willing to treat her with respect, even if mockingly so. She did not get on this boat to fall for its captain. That happened in spite of them. In this episode "Heart of Gold" there's a moment when she refers to her long dear friend Nandi as a whore. She claims its applicable cuz they're not sanctioned by The Guild, but what she's doing out in the border planets is no different in Mal's eyes which is all the more reason why he wants to fight for them - because the Alliance will not. To Mal, Inara's always been a whore. Deep down he sees no difference between those sanctioned by the Guild and those who are not but learning about Inara and seeing how she lives her life, he's learned that she does deserve respect because she's earned it. She takes her work as seriously as he takes his. So if she deserves respect and rights, they all do. Every whore deserves to be called a Companion, if that's what they want. It's not a negotiation with Mal. It's far more binary to him. Either everyone deserves respect or no one does. If a trade contributes in a positive way to society, then they are worth fighting for when the chips are down. It's not that some should get respect and others not by the luck of the draw. That's what he's always fighting against, be it in Shindig, or War Stories, or here in Heart of Gold. These ladies need protection from a man who feels himself above them, and Mal sees himself ultimately as their last line of defense. In some ways this makes him more noble and honest than any man Inara has ever bedded. Yet she can't have him. The ethical and cultural limitations on both of them make for great television. She didn't want anyone placing restrictions on her. If she were to give in to her feelings for Mal, he would not allow her to continue her trade. He wouldn't be able to separate his relationship to her with her business. She'd be his. And Inara isn't anybody's. It would eventually come down to picking Mal or continuing to be a Companion. She could not do both. Being the career woman that she is, she is leaving Serenity because she can't stay there with the temptation of Mal. Cuz part of her wants to stop fighting and just be whatever he wants, and that part of her would mean all the rest of her doesn't get to continue to be everything she's worked her life to be up until now. She'd lose everything to become Mrs. Reynolds. Objectively the trade off is simply not worth it to her. I mean, he's cute and all in those tight pants but he's not worth giving up a career over. Inara loved Mal enough to not be the one to break his heart any more than she already had. Up until this point, that would have been Mal's doing to himself. If she continued this business partnership or this friendship or whatever it was turning into, knowing now that it was a charade hiding how they really felt towards each other, at some point in the near future, any heart breaking would be partly her responsibility. What I feel the series was going to reveal, and what we never really get to see (tho the film touched on it a bit) was that there was no unraveling this knot. She was inexplicably tied to Malcolm on some indefinable level. Their lives were going to continue to intertwine and nothing she does could really change that. It's one of the many MANY aspects of this series that is so frustrating. Some shows are a will they won't they predictable plot. With Mal and Inara the Covenant we entered into from the pilot with the writers was that these star crossed souls were destined to be together but that it wasn't going to last, and the question always was HOW. Like any James Bond film. We know he's gonna survive. He always survives. We know he'll always get the girl. We know the bad guys will always die in the end. We don't know how. We want to see it happen. Likewise, we wanted to see the Inara/Mal train wreck, preferably in slow motion over several seasons and both of their hearts on display and bleeding from start to finish. All the makings of great tragic romance were there, and we've been denied seeing it because FOX sucks.. but I'm not bitter. At least that's how I've always taken it. Your mileage may vary.

One asshole exec just didn't get the concept... saw the pilot opening and couldn't get past "Why are there horses in space?" He ended up getting fired. Inara doesn't like complications. Its pretty central to who she is even if we don't know her past. And Mal became a complication that she could no longer ignore so she cut out the complication. Honestly it would've been out of character for her to go with it.

Also there is no indication at all through the series that Mal was ever with a woman during that time . . . pulling jobs, stuck on the ship, no real time at all. He was in command and serenity was his woman. Nandy was the first woman he'd been with for a long while and that he chose her might have have shattered the illusion in Inara's mind that he was waiting or holding out for her. Seeng him be vulnerable to that temptation with Nandy might have made her feel unworthy . . . . I don't know, just spit-ballin lol!

15:46 I'm saddened at the knowledge Eric has never gotten drunk on honey mead at a Rennaissance Faire and listened to a band of folk musicians, one of which dragged his dulcimer out of his van and carried it around the faire site just so he could play it for drunken sots like Eric. That happened to me long long ago (before cellphone cameras so I don't have a video of it) and it's one of my favorite memories. Hand in hand with my gal. Standing there dressed like idiots listening to the most romantic music ever while drinking alcohol out of wooden mugs. Inarra crying was a powerful scene exposing her emotions. A lot of people seem to think that Malcolm is in the wrong though. They seem to forget that Inarra has been having sex and sex for money, than Malcolm has had in the whole series. So her emotional reaction always caught me as hypocrisy, She can sleep with whoever for money, but has her heart broken when Malcolm is with someone for actual mutual respect and comfort? It seems so out of character for Inarra. I just do not see her crying about it no matter if she is in love with Malcolm. Also if she were so in love with Malcolm, why does she not find herself conflicted with sleeping with others for money. Yes it is her life and what she knows as a Companion. But I think I would have believed her crying here more, if she had been having actual issues with her own profession previously. Like if she was having doubts and hesitancy fulfilling her profession or she was breaking down after. Yes we have seen her get jealous about Safron when she found out Mal had married Safron (despite him not knowing he did). We also see throughout the series she is attracted to him. But she shows no remorse or second thoughts or hesitation about her profession and then she breaks down in tears because Mal has sex? To me it just was a serious tangent to he characters beliefs in every other instance of the series. After all Malcolm is obviously attracted to Inarra, we know he feels for her how she feels. Yet her did not break down in tears or get upset with how often Inarra had sex with her clients. Yes he disrespected her professsion, but he has done that from the BEGINNING, even before he knew her well enough to develop feelings for her. So his character has been consistent. I just think that this is one of the RARE instances, where the writers FORCED a reaction. When it just did not feel like the way Inarra would have reacted. Granted, they did not get even the remainder of their first season, let alone any others. So it is possible that her breaking down and crying was the first crack. That if we had more episodes, we may have seen her struggling to continue with her profession and maybe even hurting her status as a companion as she struggled with the new emotions. But without that, this just seemed like hypocrisy on Inarra's part. Which is not to say I do not love the character or Firefly. I am just stating my opinion on this one scene. I found it hard to feel for Inarra because of the hypocrisy. Yet another reason you have to hate on the networks(FOX!) for not allowing this wonderful Universe to grow and truly explore the lives of these people we have grown to love.

@@Tito373737 I knew that, but it is still out of character and she is still being a hypocrite. She was not breaking down and crying after she had sex with her clients. She was dying then, why was she not in tears struggling after every client wishing it had been Mal cause she is dying. She did not. She was perfectly fine sleeping with clients for money knowing how Mal felt about that even with a terminal illness. Suddenly the writers have her breakdown cause Mal has sex? She is not supposed to be puritanical abound sex. My comment in my opinion still stands regarding this particular scene. The only scene in all of Firefly including the movie that irked me. Because then it would hit home she really could not be with him because of her illness. I might believe that scene if Mal had been injured and she thought he was dying. But that reaction because of sex? From Inarra? Not buying it.

One of the many questions Firefly left behind is why did Inara leave Sihnon? We've gotten some clues as to her character, so something obviously happened that made her want to turn away from her ambitions and run off into the more wild parts of the galaxy. The hypocrisy still bugs me, though. Just because she was born on a central planet and received an expensive, fancy education doesn't make what she does any different from those simple girls do in Heart of Gold. It bugs me that "being registered in the Guild" gives you the right to be offended at being called a whore. When it comes down to it, people are paying those girls and Inara for the same thing - companionship and sex. And Inara crying over Mal sleeping with someone when her job is literally to sleep with people is also hypocritical, but I understand that it would still hurt regardless of her job. That's probably why she was able to pull herself together and decide to leave. Logic would have told her that she has no claim on him, and he has no claim on her.

The difference between Inara or even Mal sleeping with people is that in all the previous situations it was not emotional. Inara, with her training, can tell that Mal's sexual relationship in this episode was also an emotional one. That is what upset Inara. Just my opinion.

Serenity reaction is a given. How many season 1 TV shows, that have been cancelled mid-season - aired out of order -- on an awful air day - resulted in a successful motion picture apart from the network? Uhhhh.... One. Fox were like, zomg, they buying up these DVDs like heroin, what moron cancelled this? :p It worked, oddly, very oddly, space-western.

Is it really canceled? Or is it on a hiatus? Why can't Scify give them one last season to finish the story. I love Dark Matter. When I first saw it, It immediately reminded me of Firefly. Like a Canadian fusion of Firefly and Andromeda. My favorite episode is the time loop episode. The actor who plays 4 got to show off his French.

spider-man it took me a while to get into dark matter. In a lot of ways it reminded me of plenty of shows that came before. It’s like they mixed the mystery of lost, prison break and other shows for the mystery. Despite that i trucked through it and did genuinely start to like it. Even though I only like a few characters. However in the later season it just became Weird. I wish it had a proper conclusion but I was never one f☝️ those bitter fans that had to trash Killjoys because it was renewed instead. Killjoys started had one thing but then became something entirely different and not in a bad way. Killjoys with the green and world building aspects became more intriguing to me. I’d still put 12 Monkeys and expanse above it but killJoys would be number 3. Then I’d probably put Wynonna Earp then Dark Matter.
