I think the ships fly with a bit of antigravity assistance. They appear to have artificial gravity on the ships, down is always down, no floating around while inside. So there could be a drive component that, while not strong enough to propel the ship, might lessen its effective mass... 😉

Fess isn't a loser. I expect he didn't fancy paying for sex, and being the Magistrate's son, there may not have been anyone of sufficient social status to please his father. Not everyone loses their virginity early, and it seems like his home life is perhaps...abusive.
