1. When it comes to Mal, the issue was never a lack of faith. The issue is that he truly believed and felt betrayed and/or abandoned by God in his time of greatest need. So, it's not that he became an atheist, it's that he's bitter and resentful. 2. Just to be clear, a companion is much more than just a prostitute. They're a combination of high class escort, Geisha, and therapist all rolled into one. Companions spend years and years studying music, literature, high society practices, sexual techniques, etc. until they're deemed ready to take on clients. Even after that point, the training is expected to continue until they retire or marry.

*Fun fact:* Letting them speak Mandarin allow them to actually curse on TV on the production side, so all the mandarin in harsher tones are swear words. And they speak Mandarin & English because China & America (the Alliance) was the last 2 superpower when the human left Earth for their new system. I am actually surprise Eric recognized they are speaking Mandarin, it one of the very few shows on TV that actually made the effort to have them speak genuine Mandarin, and they did it better than a lot of US shows.

Joss has form for getting around the censors on his shows, by using lesser known curse words in other languages/cultures, such as British swear words in Buffy (pillock/bugger/bollocks). Of course now everything is on the internet so it's much harder to do that.

Linguistically, Firefly tends to be one of the most accurate shows to depict future English. I sometimes use the show in a lecture on the history of English as an example of where the language may one day go. English is absorptive of languages around it and as noted by others, America and China are the two superpowers that survived from Earth that Was, with English being the more mutable language, so it took dominance with Chinese embedded in it. There are several scholarly articles about the linguistics of the 'verse. As with many elements of this show, it is one of the best thought-out television series ever, which makes what Fox did to it even more criminal. Browncoats forever.

While I don't think it will ever happen, in a time where we have new seasons of Twin Peaks, Roseanne, X-Files, Will and Grace, Arrested Development, Murphy Brown and Young Justice, I'm not discounting anything. Episode two was written after Fox refused to air the pilot making it a second pilot. Eventually they aired the pilot after the show was going to be canceled. Also Fox choose to start the series during the baseball playoffs meaning you would get an episode then baseball the next week and then another episode that aired after it's time slot (after the game). Being aired out of sequence was a problem but the inconsistent time slot was probably a bigger factor.
@mrs.schmenkman4 жыл бұрын

I laughed when Eric made the comment about being shocked even though he knew Kaylee was alright. I was one of those who watched the show when it first aired. They showed this episode last, and even though I had seen ten others before it I was still shocked! The "Cry Baby" is also a tribute to the Beatles' song of the same name, which is why Wash casually said "Make your mother sigh." I know you have to cut out a lot to get a 10-minute run time, but I missed my favorite line of the entire series: "If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skins into their clothes. And if we're very, very lucky they'll do it in that order." [edit] I wrote that before I saw you talk about it after the actual reaction. As for Inara "the Ambassador", I thought it was a nice touch that the most respectable person on board was the prostitute. Of course a Companion is so much more. Government licensed and regulated, dedicated to a certain standard of professionalism, I likened her position to what ancient kingdoms called a "Courtesan". Oh, and on the DVD there are some deleted scenes that tell a lot more about the interpersonal relationships. I'm so glad you guys are reacting to what is arguably the best Goram show ever!

Rather, Fox pulled "Serenity" from the line-up, aired episodes 2-10, announced the show's cancellation, then used the remaining episodes to fill the timeslot until they had a replacement. This episode just happened to be the first post-cancellation episode to air.

Also, as you may know, SyFy does not have streaming rights to the show which is hurting their income. I think Amazon will market the show better. Tell ya this is a very unusual show for science fiction , I have never seen one like it. It is sort of like Game of Thrones, which is not Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings but an adult fantasy , sort of off-center with an intelligent adult story. The Expanse is way different from Star Trek or Star Wars, it has a more dirt under the finger nails future fiction verisimilitude to it. (It sticks to the factual physical universe better than any other TV show set most in other space.) World building is great and the story is very engaging.

I mentioned this in the comments from 1x2. But you asked so I wanted to share again. The reason everyone speaks English and Chinese is it is assumed China and the US are the only 2 countries that survive to when everyone leaves earth. The other reason is it gave writers the ability to use genuinely vulgar language on fox in 2002 and not get in trouble. My understanding is everything they say is valid cursing and slang used in china at the time of filming. Which is pretty cool I think.

It is so funny how Eric brings up "No religion on this ship".... just mere moments before he sees exactly WHY Mal lost his faith in religion. That moment of everything being destroyed or given-up in the valley? The pointless death after the order to lay down arms by Bendis next to him. The fact that the 'support' of the 82 isn't coming....... It was all too much for Mal. At that point, he gave up putting any of his faith into anyone, or anything, other than himself and Zoe. However, this episode shows exactly why everyone loves Mal. Paid to do a job.... do that job, nothing more and nothing less..... and that's all that Mal requires. But, you step outside of that agreement, you try to betray Mal, you try to cheat him, you try to go back on your word and not pay him? Well, that's when Mal's "not going to be treated that way ever again" comes out and he puts an end to the situation.

I'm pretty sure the weyland logo is just an easteregg/nod of the creator to a movie franchise he loves and worked on previously. Nothing more, nothing less... And it isn't that surprising that a creator would take bits and pieces and ideas of something he/she worked on previously because you like those bitss and pieces and want to use them and expand on them. I do it all the time, doesn't mean everything i draw is 'set in the same universe'. Assuming a tiny detail like that makes it set in the same universe is kind of a leap in my opinion. But hey, maybe i'm wrong. You'd have to ask josh whedon. :) Look at castle, the series nathan fillion made after firefly. There are some little nods and references to firefly in that as well. Doesn't mean they are at all set in the same universe... ;)
@TheDetailsMatter3 жыл бұрын
The episode reveals a lot about Mal. His pride as master of his ship, his stubbornness, his resentment at God for betraying his faith, his highly-developed skill for making bad plans. But mostly, his Luck. In gaming terms, a system that includes a Luck stat generally uses it as the number of actions the character can perform without any possibility of failure, each use of which temporarily reduces said stat by one. If the stat ever reaches zero, then the player gets hosed mercilessly, every significant action he undertakes failing spectacularly until such time as his Luck stat regenerates into positive numbers (generally one point per day). Malcolm Reynolds has a Luck Stat of 1. He saves it for absolute emergencies, because he knows what will follow after he burns it. The rest of the time he relies on skills that require a roll of the dice. Lucky for him, he's got pretty decent skill levels in command, shooting, fighting, and negotiation (as you already saw in episode 2). But when you've just made an enemy of the local crimeboss and Reavers are bearing down on your position, the last thing you need is to get into a time-consuming gun battle with an Alliance mole who likes to shoot at innocent bystanders. Burn that Luck point and Pow, one shot right in the brain without apparently aiming or even breaking stride, then dump the trash and let the rest of the hard work be done by crewpeople with highly developed piloting and engineering skill scores who can get successful rolls with trivial ease.

It wasn't incompetence that ruined the show; Fox was downright trying to get it cancelled. They originally hired Joss Whedon to make them a Buffy the Vampire Slayer in Space-type show, but then he handed them Firefly, which was something the execs did not want. They quickly made up their minds that the show would never be popular (it's a western, not enough sexy times, plot and characters too complicated, etc. ) and thus did everything they could to make sure that Firefly never caught on with the audience. That meant not showing the pilot until the end of the show's run, showing episodes out of order, and not showing episodes AT ALL. When the ratings tanked (as Fox wanted) the execs were free to cancel the show and thus their contract with Whedon. But then, surprise surprise, the show proved popular during the DVD release (since it was in the right order and had all the episodes) and fans clamored for more, eventually getting a full-length, theater-released movie out of it. So it just goes to show how much television execs back then (and now) know about their audience.

Fact (not a fun one, but a fact nonetheless): FOX never intended to air this, but did as a way of saying goodbye to fans after they cancelled it, and the three unaired episodes only came into play after it got picked up by a station (not sure which) for a set of reruns, which was also rare as there usually has to be a certain amount of episodes aired for reruns to happen with a show.

The higher-class someone is, the more aspects of Asian culture they adopt. Simon's surname is Tam, which isn't an Anglo surname. The upper class usually wear vaguely Chinese-style clothing (Atherton's suit in 'Shindig)and have Chinese-sounding surnames (Atherton *Wing*). The closest analogy is Europeans speaking French to show how cultured they are. Since the border/rim planets are dirt poor, it's more like a classic Western, but the Core/Central planets are where the richest people live, so that's where most of the futuristic and high-class stuff shows up.

They passed on a possible multi-year critical/popular hit show that could have made them a pile of money. In essence, this was an American version of "Cowboy Bebop," which today's TV producers have been trying to get "in the can and on the air" for years.

I prefer in the releasing order, but it's just because I love to pick things in its time.

Wait wait wait... When Mal gets on that turret in the opening and the HUD comes up, is that the Wayland-Yutani logo from aliens at the top in the middle?

James OH MYNOCK! I'm looking right at both logos. The one on Mal's gun could have Wayland-Yutani Corp. at the top easily. It just doesn't have 'building better worlds' at the bottom.

It probably is a nod to the alien franchise. Whedon wrote alien resurrection and was quite vocal about being a fan of the alien franchise. So the logo might definitely be an Easter egg / nod ...

6:19 - Wash says they have a MOLE onboard. You says they have a Badger! Either way they should get an exterminator. LOL 11:09 - "That was crazy!" That's why Ivan got that nickname for inventing that maneuver! Love the drinking cups. K2 is a lot like Wash, doncha think?

Regarding the food, Mal said the food will last a month…longer if you don’t like your children very much. I take that to mean the *rations* will last that long, not a reference to its shelf life.

That scene at 3:12 ROFL. It almost sound like an Abridged version of a show, not the actual script. XD
