Don't feel bad if you don't understand everything right away, Jules. One of the most appealing aspects of "Firefly" is that every episode reveals a little more about the universe the show is set in. It's not confusion you're experiencing, it's intrigue!

@@julesreacts - This IS a space western. Remember that all the inner planets are "civilized" places where the Alliance rules. And the outer planets are a somewhat lawless frontier. It seems like the old west because it IS like the old west. On a planet that is just starting to become inhabited, nobody cares about fine clothes, high-tech gadgets, or creature comforts. The important things are food, cattle, chickens, seed, medicine, tools, etc. They are farmers and cowboys settling a new place, and the bare essentials of survival are the currency they deal in.

For me, Firefly will always be when television sci-fi finally came into its own. No more silly aliens. A dramatic reduction in technobabble. This is, to quote creator Joss Whedon "About nine people looking out into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things." Is it perfect? No, but there's no such thing as perfection. It was the first, and, IMHO, boldest step forward in television sci-fi since the original Star Trek. It is pure, it is timeless, and it led to things like RDM's re-imagined 'Battlestar Galactica', and the adaptation of 'The Expanse'. I am a Browncoat for LIFE! Glad to have you with us, Jules! ^_^

I arrived to the Firefly universe late. I actually got introduced by watching the wrap-up movie Serenity first about two years after it was released. I instantly fell in love. And it ruined nothing for me. Not even the spoilers. I wanted to immediately go back to the Firefly series and know more. And I still rank this as maybe my all-time favorite series and movie. So much so that all my vehicles have personalized plates with some sort of Firefly reference on them. Yes. I'm a nerd. And a member of the Browncoats. So enjoy! Firefly is my favorite series ever. A lot of your questions will be answered as the series progresses. I'll give you a little background without any spoilers. Basically the initial concept was what if the Rebellion had lost in Star Wars, and what if the Western elements were more forward. In the Firefly universe, it's the relatively near future. An alliance between the USA and China lbecomes a one world government. You will hear and see Chines elements on occasion. Mostly to cover cursing. As resources dwindle and contamination increases, humans spread to other planets. Yhey use terraforming to make them habitable. The core worlds run by the Alliance are bright, beautiful, futuristic, and corrupt. On the outer planets, settlers are dropped of with minimal basic supplies and have to make due with what's available. Hence the 19th century/Wild West aesthetic. Resentment grew over Alliance treatment of some of these worlds and there was a civil war. The rebel "Browncoats" fighting for independence vs the Alliance, which is what we see in the beginning of the series (Mal and Zoe at the battle of Serenity Valley). The Alliance won the war shortly after than battle. Some of those who fought for independance stayed on the outskirts of society. With Alliance tarrifs and regulations, there's plenty of demand for all manner of goods and services without those additional fees. So our intrepid crew make their way smuggling and taking whatever other jobs they can to keep them flying. Enjoy the show. Welcome to our ranks. Those of us who loved a piece of art, but were left bereft. Broken hearted as it was ended far too soon.

The inspiration for the show came from books about the time after the US Civil War. North and South were trying to build new lives, people were moving west to find new opportunities, and the U.S. Army was the principal display of federal authority in the territories and states. Courts and Marshals had a lot of ground to cover and were heavily outnmbered. Manifest Destiny and the expansion of telegraphs, railroads, and civilization pits East Coast society against Western self-sufficiency. In other words, it is all over the map. The setting takes place in the 'Verse, with terraformed planets and moons. Humanity took the long ride between stars in generation sleeper ships as Earth-That-Was could not support their numbers. The dominant sources of resources were a mixture of American and Chinese societies, including enclaves of different nations and cultures.

In addition to the 14 episodes, there eere the R Tam Sessions as a viral online ad campaign for the movie Serenity by Universal Studios. I remember watching this show when it came out, fox network really messed it up, playing episodes out of order, randomly changing air date and times. The rumor is that they wanted the show to fail because they thought it was too expensive to produce, but it was so good! The music is amazing, all the actors are awesome... it's kind of a mix of western and sci fi, with some planets super advanced and others not so much. Firefly has been deemed 'the greatest show ever cancelled in its first season.' Enjoy! Also, if you commit to watching the series, you MUST also commit to watching the 'Serenity' movie that came out a few years later as a kind of epilogue to the show!

Its a Space Western. When it was originally aired Fox insisted that they wanted the first episode to have more action so the episode The Train Job was shown first. It was cancelled because fox panicked when they thought the series was too "complicated" for the general audience, and did such mistakes as airing the episodes in the incorrect order etc, to confirm with more "traditional" TV expectations. The pilot was aired close to last, the train job first. The result, a series where the audience had a very hard time establishing any relationship with the characters, which fox took as a sign they had been right all along.

This was originally a two-parter when shown on TV, hence the double length. Have fun on your journey. The fence was Badger. The reason for the tech imbalance in the show is effectively the idea that horses can make other horses, whilst cars and tractors need a factory and an entire infrastructure to support it and them. Most of the fringe, where the show is set, just has settlers dumped on them to make do. The core worlds are high tech, but, for reasons you will find out, the crew of the Serenity rarely venture near them. And yes, everyone loves Kaylee.

As mentioned previously, to begin any series is very difficult for the first few episodes, let along the very first episode. You're trying to remember this or that, you're trying to place characters into a role they might fit, you're not sure who's really a good person or not, let alone trying to remember everyone's names. Other reactors mentioned how they felt there was simply too much going on from this first episode that they thought they wouldn't like it or want to continue reacting to it. But, alas ....... usually after 3 episodes in ...... everyone loves it, loves the characters, and immediately becomes a "brown coat". With the amount of "brown coats" we've gained over the years since this series aired on TV, I have no doubt the Alliance would have lost the war in Serenity Valley that fateful day so many years ago.

Yay! I only watched Firefly for the first time last year and it's so much fun. The cast clearly all enjoy working together and have great chemistry. It's a real shame that Fox, who gave The X-Files a chance a decade earlier, couldn't see the gem they had with Firefly and cancelled it prematurely. But at least they got a chance to later wrap things up with a movie (also called Serenity) that I actually think is a pretty good "ending" for the story.

FOX management underwent a "political upheaval" right after the contract was signed for 5 seasons x (22 to 24 episodes per season) of "Firefly". New FOX Execs were eager to erase their predecessors work. Every dirty trick in the book was used to get "Firefly" canceled as that was the only way to "break the old contract".

Very happy you are reacting to this show. It's a great ride, but also has a lot of heart. I think the "Law of Salvage," that the characters on the show are operating on, is based after actual maritime law, just used for situations in space, instead of the sea. Though, they do seem to want to avoid the Alliance, so maybe what they are doing is only "semi-legal."🤠

Tne law of salvage has been used quite often in Westerns with riverboats and seafaring cargo vessels and shanghaiing people as crew without proper skills. If it were a registered salvage operation, they would have full claim to all assets including personal goods. As an illegal salvage run, Badger identified where the highest value would be and hoped to sell it on the black market. The value dropped once everyone watching the trade knew the Alliance was looking and that it was blatantly marked. Patience was willing to risk it as it was consumable and she had a planet of mouths to feed. Not that she intended to pay.

In the Firefly universe, the core planets are what you'd expect from a futuristic civilisation that has spaceships etc. The outer planets are much less developed. Since Mal and Zoe were on the losing side in the war with the Alliance, which is now the government, and aren't exactly law-abiding, they tend to stay away from the core.

So, this is supposed to take place a long long while in the future, after the earth was destroyed. The setting was someone taking the idea of a Space Western literally and running with it, which sounds like a bad idea on paper, but this was actually extremely well done. There were a lot of factors that led to only a single season, including the show not being broadcast in order, and little advertising about the show, and the channel having other shows that it liked the thought of more that it wanted to broadcast instead of this.

Jane is a character you love to hate, but, soon, you will eventually hate that you love him. He makes you want to believe in him, but you never really know if you can trust him. This show does a great job of bringing a lot of questions to your mind and eventually you'll get your answers but they take their suspenseful time doing so. Lol. And remember, there is a full length movie at the end called Serenity that will tie up loose ends left by the cancelation of the show. The series was released in an odd backward order when it came out, but you are going in the correct order. The pilot you just watched is actually two episodes in one. That's why it's longer than the other episodes. It is considered a space western. It's very unique in that. You're also doing the XFiles! That's awesome. I've only seen the first season of it myself. One other thing of note. Earth was essentially dominated by the US and China. So everybody is bilingual speaking both English and Mandarin. This allowed the show to use dialogue that wouldn't be allowed by US censors on TV. The censors don't seem to care if offensive dialogue is in a foreign language. It's usually pretty easy to guess given situation and tone to fill the gap. Great series though. I loved it because space cowboys was so different and original. Welcome to the Brown coats and enjoy the ride! Btw, if you want to try another Sci-fi I would suggest Orphan Black starring Tatiana Maslany (currently in She Hulk). It's a female led series that takes place in current day Canada. So it's a science based sci-fi rather than space. The show orinally aired on Space Channel in Canada and BBC America in the US. After season 2 it was airing in over 100 countries. Through all the various award sources Maslany had 39 best actress nominations and 23 wins over the five seasons. In Canada she won best actress in a drama series all five season. It's a very original story that is 10 episodes per season. Firefly and Orphan Black are two of my favorite shows to watch reactions to.

Sci-Fi Space-Western is a good description. You'll get accustomed to the setting quite quickly. Your impression of them as a group of self-employed freelancers doing jobs for money, some legal and some not, is accurate. Not quite pirates, but not quite a merchant vessel, either. :P The big guy, Jayne, may grow on you over time. For instance, in this episode you can see that he really cares about Kaylee. He was annoyed that she was showing interest in Simon at the dinner table, and you saw him scared for her when he was watching through the window of the med-bay after she'd been shot. He was also about to do some very painful things to the guy that shot her before Shepherd Book stopped him. I think that being a brash tough-guy, he appreciates Kaylee's innocence and sweetness and has a bit of a crush on her. You can also tell that he respects Captain Mal, because he'll mouth off a bit occasionally, but when Mal tells him to settle down, he does it right away. I hope that you enjoy the series, and the cinema movie Serenity that kind of caps off the whole thing.

I'm glad you really liked this show. The show takes a few episodes to find it's stride, but once it does, there is a string of 4 or 5 episodes that are some of my favorite tv episodes of all time. Sadly, Fox never gave the show a chance. They aired the episodes out of order, and actually aired the pilot movie you just watched last. There was a brief shimmer of hope when they increased the episode order from 12 (the pilot technically counts as two episode) to 15. But then they never aired three of them. In Canada, we had to wait for the show to be rerun by Space, out sci fi channel. The year 2002 was a great time to be a sci fi fan. Not only did we have "Firefly", there was "Stargate: SG1", "Andromeda", "Star Trek: Enterprise", "Smallville", "Dark Angel", "The X-Files", "Jeremiah", "Odyssey 5", "Earth: The Final Conflict", "Mutant X", "Lexx", and "Farscape".

@@Razzlion The year 2002 also coincided with the start of entire seasons of TV shows being released on DVD, for our home libraries. "Andromeda" is not too pricey to pick up as a complete series collection, but hold on to those "Dark Angel" DVD's, as they're out of print, and very expensive. I don't even think the show is available for streaming (legally) anywhere.

For some context: The setting for the series is a nod back to just after the American Civil War. Capt Mal and Zoe fought for the Rebel side of the war. They were known as "Independents". Now that the war is over and they were on the losing side they're kind of on the outside of society, and still a bit angry. So, they're outlaws working in the "fringe" of civilized space, much like post ACW confederate soldiers became outlaws in the "territories" or unincorporated areas outside the borders of the land officially claimed by the US gov at that time. And it's in space.

Thank you for deciding to show your reactions to Firefly, which is my favorite TV show ever! From your comments, it sounds like you're a "Browncoat," as are the vast majority of people who watch, and eventually love Firefly! When Firefly was on the air, I only saw a few episodes, and it turned out they were shown out of order (the first ep I saw was "Safe" and the second was "War Stories,") because Fox did a horrible job of promoting the show, and I had no idea what the show was even about. But after the DVDs came out, I was sold on it, and I watch Firefly at least twice a year, it's that good! The writing and dialog on the show are incredible, and you will find that you will quickly fall in love with all the characters. Each episode builds on the last, and you learn more and more about the characters in every episode. The show is really amazing, because although it's a "science fiction" show, it's a character based show, and you'll also find that the ship, Serenity, is also a character on the show as well. Welcome to "The Browncoats!" 🙂

Awesome to see you watch this, as others have said, the more you watch the more the worlds unfurl. In any case you’re spot on, it’s a space western. There’s reasons for this but I don’t want to spoil everything in how the show tells the story. But a quick way of thinking about it for the mix of sci fi and western to make sense, think of it like what happened when places like Europe sent out colony ships to new lands. They came from an advanced society, and people in those colonies were on the fringes so they didn’t have access to all the tech as they settled “wild” new lands, and later on in history much like the Wild West of North America when it went west from the more “civilised” east part of North America. Also I might just be repeating what others have said… some things to keep in mind is that on this future there’s a huge influence of Chinese on the language, which for some is rather out there at first… however it is also just a sneaky way of the writers of the show to sneak in a lot of cursing past the censors most of the time; sometimes by the tone it’s obvious they’re saying something negative, other times it’s flat. There are other things I can mention, but I again want to stray from explaining too much and probably repeating things. Just take it in and enjoy, you’re doing great and I don’t think your out of your depth at all, just think of it as Red Dead Redemption 2 in space, with criminals with their own codes of conduct even if they go afoul of the law, or the Alliance in this case. Oh and everybody loves Kaylee, she’s just the sweetest person amongst all these space cowboys.

The worlds look low-tech because they're outer colony planets. Later we visit one of the Alliance core worlds. The show pretty much created the genre of "Space Western". The colony worlds of the former Independents are a mix of Old West and "Used Future" (Used Future being the look of Star Wars, Dark Star, and Alien). The Alliance tends to go more for off-white plastic, indirect blue lighting, and signs all done with the Eurostile Bold Extended font.

The show, And Hopefully Only the Show, will reveal much of the story, slowly. The war, at the beginning, was between the Alliance, and the rebels. The captain, and Zoe, were on the losing side, so things are a bit rougher for him and the crew. That will pretty much do it for background. It is unusual, so far as genre goes, because there hadn't really been anything like it before, a Science Fiction Western. That is pretty much anyone knew, upon first viewing this program, so you are good to go, Juliette!😉 More will become clearer, as the show goes on. The reason the order is talked about so much is that the episodes were shown out of order by the TV network, and some were not shown at all. But rest assured you are viewing them in the correct way. I am glad you liked this first episode so much. Have a great unspoilered run!.
@julesreacts2 жыл бұрын
An unspoilered run is something I definitely much want on any occasion, Tom! Sometimes, things Sadly Never go to plan but I will try hard to avoid anything too crazy! I was a little bit confused by this first episode as I have NEVER seen a futuristic western cowboy type genre before, so it's certainly original! I have to say that after watching the Train Job when things were explained once more, it sunk in a little better for me. I am feeling a little more confident with it, but very green still when it comes to this genre as it's not really something I watch but the characters are so wonderful and endearing, that it makes it very easy to sit down and get into it! Plus, it's so funny too! I never expected it would have those moments, but I'm glad it does 😊 I'm already looking forward to more, Tom 😄
@tomswift34822 жыл бұрын
Yes, Sadly Never, indeed. This is a pretty good group though, so one can always hope. The Firefly fans can certainly be fanatical, but they understand the initial impact which unspoiled viewing can have on first-time watchers, as well. I knew that science fiction wasn't something you would normally seek out, but I was certain that the ensemble cast was perfect for you, and your solid interest in well told stories. The Train Job is a great episode as well, and complements the opening so well. I look forward to watching it!🙌

@tomswift34822 жыл бұрын
it's just too good to spoil! I figured it would be popular, and, more importantly, I just had a feeling you would enjoy it all, very much. The Serenity crew aren't strictly pirates, but they operate as independent shipping on a pretty thin margin. The idea of this future is they are on a frontier making a living whatever way they can trying to stay out of the rigid somewhat authoritarian system the Alliance. The reason they are riding horses etc. is that horses don't break down like mechanical things, especially when you're planet is so far away from the nearest repair facility. A future frontier will have a lot in common with the old North American and Australian frontiers, without the indigenous peoples.
@SaulOhio2 жыл бұрын
The reason for the interesting mix of super high tech and more primitive is that it is very expensive to transport industrial machinery and consumer products from one planet to another, so often settlers have to start at a much lower level of technology, what they can make from what they find. As a planet becomes more advanced, population grows and more tech is imported, a planet can become more technologically advanced. Persephone is somewhere in the middle of this process. Whitefall is closer to the beginning.
