When it cut back to River fighting the Reavers, you saw a Reaver rise up in slo-mo and "roar"... that was in fact Neil Patrick Harris, who Joss Whedon originally wanted to play Simon Tam but couldn't due to other commitments. When the chance to get in on an uncredited cameo in the movie came up, Harris jumped at it. Also, when the Operative gave the order to "stand down" and all the Alliance troops lowered their guns in unison, that actually was when the director yelled "cut" for that scene and all the extras just relaxed and the camera was still running and they liked it so much they kept it in. Lastly, back in the street scene, when River was talking seemingly jibberish and Jayne stated she was damaging his calm and went on about how everyone was dead for no reason... as the camera was spinning during his monologue, from one member of the crew to the other, the moment he said "they died for no apparent reason" it stopped on Wash - to which, shortly thereafter, for seemingly no good reason (and much to the collective gasp and wails of theaters full of Browncoats) Wash was abruptly and unceremoniously killed, with no time to react or mourn. Barely any time to process what just happened and for what reason Whedon opted to do it. Some have speculated that Alan Tudyk was unable to commit to another movie or show (should this movie do well enough to green light them) so he and Whedon agreed to kill off the character. I also read an article sometime after the movie's release wherein an insider spoke of the friction between the Fox execs and Whedon during the original show and how, even still, they were adamant about killing the show but also NOT releasing the rights... AND these same people had been applying pressure to Whedon during the shows running to manufacture a love triangle between Wash, Zoe and Mal and Whedon flat refused. His stance was that Wash and Zoe were to have a happy, healthy, dedicated and loyal marriage and he allegedly told them "I will kill one of them off before I let you ruin this marriage." So, after Serenity, not knowing if the show would be brought back by Fox (since they had control) but without him, and fearing what they might do, Whedon ensured they would not tarnish that union.

"I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Summer Glau. Gun Enthusiast Fact: The cannon the crew mounts to Serenity is a WW2 German 20mm Flak 38. Basic Training Fact: Summer Glau trained intensely with the fight choreographers for three months before principal photography began. Rebuilding Serenity Fact: According to Nathan Fillion, he personally supplied the blueprints used to build the ship set in the film after being informed at a production meeting that the originals had been lost. He was able to do so because, being so excited about being in the original show, he had taken photos of ALL the preproduction materials he had seen, including the blueprints.

a) Engineering fact: the ship is still TERRIBLY DESIGNED (all those ladders and walkways are useful for what? The cargo room only has a "garage room door", so filling that high cargo space through that small hole isnt going to work. They COULD HAVE done it much better ... even with that "general design". b) Physics / common knowledge fact: Summer Glau training is commendable, but she would not have been able to beat up all the reavers/bar patrons in the fight, because her MASS is small and thus the IMPACT ON LARGER MASSES is not as shown in the movie ... c) Material science fact: Teflon was invented "for space", because there is this nasty little problem of "two metal surfaces rubbing on each other = the oxide layer on both of them gets removed and they FUSE TOGETHER, thus eliminating any moveability". That gun would not have been able to turn much in space, because it was designed for "in atmosphere use".

It just occurred to me, that the Operative actually gave Mal his crazy idea. He said, "You're not a Reaver, Mal." And Mal realized he wasn't - but he could pretend to be...and he ended the conversation to get started on his new plan. One of my favorite bits is when Mal gives his "I aim to misbehave" speech, and Jayne is first to sign on. He takes a drink, quotes Shepherd Book (whom he really respected), and passed his drink to Simon - for the first time really treating him like a comrade in arms. The whole crew is united. Zoe's "she's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true" isn't just about Serenity - it's about herself. She's compartmentalized Wash's death, and will live her life, honoring his memory but going on, there are still people she cares about.

Great reactions. The Miranda storyline was supposed to be revealed at the end of season 2. Book's death was helped gain a belief in something. Wasn't death was to show how deadly this mission was. It has been said that Ron and Alan were unable to commit to additional possible movies. There are comic books/graphic novel to continue the story and reveal back stories. Book's back story is in A Shepherd's Tale. There is also novels/audio books that tell more stories. The time frame is between the show and the movie. Inara had a secret. She was dying. It is unfortunately we never got the chance to explore that storyline.

When Joss Whedon got the go ahead to do the movie he was hoping there would be sequels. He asked the cast if they could do more movies. Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass said they had other commitments and could only do the one movie. Shepherd Book and Wash had to die. It's really a shame that so few reactors buy the DVDs and find out the hundreds of back stories that most Browncoats know. Book's life story is told in a hard bound comic called "A Shepherd's Tale" by Joss Whedon. He came from a broken family and had a very tough life in the ghetto and was never an operative. He was a high ranking Alliance Officer and was spying for the Browncoats.

Re: the switch that flipped in River - if you recall, the doctor from the Academy said that the "neural stripping affects their reality." River had these extra memories she'd gained from reading members of Parliament, and, due to the neural stripping, she didn't have the ability to tell her own memories from the extra ones, and that's what was making her crazy. But once they saw the message from the recording, she was able to put it all in context, and it snapped her back to sanity.
@izzardclips935010 ай бұрын
Well, hypothetically speaking, a human brain doesn't have a mechanism of telling you "this memory isn't mine." If it were possible to implant another person's memories there, context is the only way to determine if they are your own. I don't think River is incapable of understanding which memories are foreign (for the most part), using the context of her own life history. But the neural stripping forces her to feel them as if they were.

I've heard before, and truly believe, that the point of killing Wash ( such a beloved character) in such a random way was to make you feel like the whole crew Could Die in that fight. Because technically, you could have had a satisfying ending where they all got the word out, but died in that effort. Wash's death makes that (tragic) possibility more plausible. I Love this movie and I loved your reaction. It's been a fun ride with you guys.

After multiple rewatches of both the show & the movie I've just realised something...! The overall story is bookended (not Book ended😢) by a loss of Faith. The pilot 'Serenity' opens with Mal losing his faith in both religion & authority when his superiors make the decision to pull out of Serenity Valley &, at the end of the movie 'Serenity' The Operative loses his faith in The Alliance when he's shown what they created in their plan to build a 'better world'! Probably not intentional... just found it interesting!

I love this movie and show - thanks so much for letting me come along for this ride. This does have a darker tone, but you have to remember that every crew member influenced Mal's direction. After Book and Inara left, he has no spiritual rudder left, so he became even more focused on survival things and less on morally right things - which leads to Book's last lines to him. So many good moments, and the show and the movie both just get deeper each time you watch them - there is just a ton of layers to this. One of the best lines that never get mentioned was Mr. Universe's line after betraying the crew and just before dying was "gimme my 30 coin". There is a parallel here because 30 pieces of silver was what Judas was paid to betray Jesus. I can almost guarantee that Mr. Universe was not getting 30 pieces of anything - we have seen paper money, and I am sure there are electronic transfers, so I think that was a metaphor that he knew how much he betrayed the crew and who he was betraying them to. There can be more things spun off of this, but it sure makes a person think. Which is why I love this show and movie. It makes you think. It is not passive entertainment or a fun story. It is Science Fiction at it's very, very best.

Yup 49:13, I sorta kinda side with the "don't like/compared to". OTOH, had I only seen the movie (w/o ever watching the series at all), the "en passant" killing off of Wash would just have been odd/shock value crude or whatever, instead of downright unacceptable. So for me it's not simply the shift in tone, but really & specifically the way our pilot was thrown tt wind AND right after that, the fact there's not a millisecond to process his hurried & undignified death. As tt "yes, but it's a movie" thing, yeah.. so very true. All's perfectly understandable with that mantra. Doesn't go to any length tho, to make me like the movie more, AFTER I got to live/love this once in a lifetime series, which was one of the very few really shiny things in popular entertainment to come out of the US in post-modern times. For each of the show and the movie, Serenity was built as two individual levels of contiguous set. The apparent "one-shot" introduction scene in the film was actually two shots with a hidden transition as Mal and Simon cross the top landing of the stairwell down to the bottom level - it cuts after Mal says "Y'all are guests on my boat" and before Simon replies "Guests!? I've *earned* my passage..."

Actually, no...the TV set and the movie set were both created the same way. Even though each of the upper and lower parts of the ship sets were designed and built contiguously, it was not possible to build one set on top of the other. This meant that they had to be built side-by-side, making a hidden cut necessary in order to give viewers an unbroken introduction to the crew and the ship. You’ll notice that when Mal and Simon are having their walk and talk, they head down a corridor, where the camera does a quick pan to Simon. In order to make this transition as smooth as possible, the same hallway where the cut takes place was actually built on both sets. Whedon came up with the idea of building each deck of Serenity as a contiguous set, so that he could establish the size of the spaceship, and film scenes where the actors could be followed as they moved around the ship. The two sets were built on separate sound stages to make second unit filming possible. The sets were built with all walls and ceilings, but designed so that walls, ceilings, and large objects could be moved to facilitate filming. In fact, by the time they got to the movie, Joss was so familiar with the set that he even added it in to the script where and when a large wall needed to be removed for the opening shot of the crew on the ship. The crew quarters _were_ built separately from the main sets since, as stated before, they could not build a set below another one. So all the interior quarters were always separate, and the cargo bay airlock was designed so it could be removed from the rest of the set and transported to other locations. This allowed it to be 'docked' with sets representing other ships or to be placed on location, allowing for continuous filming from inside the airlock through to the other set or location, while avoiding the need to intercut between location and soundstage filming. But they did this for movie and the tv episodes. Of the changes made to the film set, the only real differences were: 1- the digital model for the ship was re-used from the series, but as it was created for standard-definition television, the level of texture and detail had to be significantly increased to the 2K digital cinema definition standard. 2 - the interior cargo bay walls were changed from straight to slightly curved sides-designer Tim Earls had learned that rounded surfaces are better for containing pressure.
@mskain489610 ай бұрын
The main promise of the movie's studio was that, if it did well enough, they'd greenlight two additional movies to continue the story rather than revive the series. However, the actors had to commit to those films. Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk had other commitments and couldn't guarantee they'd be around for the next two movies had they happened, and so Joss Whedon opted to kill them off in this movie rather than leave uncertainty and have them written out between movies. He made good use of the deaths, particularly in making it feel like he could possibly kill everyone in the reaver battle or at least one or two more, but there wasn't any other particularly deep reason behind the deaths, i.e. tying into possible deaths over the course of the series. I think Whedon would have killed off characters only if they were done with the show and wanted/needed out if it had gone all seven or so seasons, up until the final season at least.

And I do not hold to that." There is no way to force people to be better that doesn't force those attempting it to be worse. You can't just use a monster without becoming one, which defeats the goal right from the start.

I think the dark tone is fine overall, and it's a perfectly valid context to explore; fallen on hard times, desperation, etc... But I do take issue specifically with the way Mal talks about Simon and River at the beginning. Simon (and now apparently River too) are officially members of the crew; and he might be gruff and tough with them, but he wouldn't speak to so callously to his crew like that (with respect to their standing and basic safety).

What made the Operative so dangerous was his belief that he was doing God's work and any atrocities committed to that end were acceptable. Book and Wash dying was because the studio execs wanted long term contracts for possible sequels, and Ron Glass couldn't sign long term because of his health, and Alan Tudyk was already in a longer contract elsewhere so he couldn't sign because of that. Also, here's my best worst Firefly joke: How do the reavers clean their spears? They put it through the wash. I'll see myself out, and head on straight to hell where I belong.

I want him to sing Dr Horrible in that makeup. My kid and I used to sing some of those for the duo songs. I love this movie. Got a 40something’ framed poster in the ManCave.

Is it easy to take those portraits down off the wall? If so you missed a great opportunity: when Book dies, take his down and hand it to him. When Wash dies take his down and hand it to him. Then when River gets dragged away take hers down and hand it to him as well. Your friend will then be expecting both Zoë & Mal to die before the end.

Hey bros, I didn't watch yet, but I wanted to say that over the last couple weeks I've watched your reactions to Training Day, Gladiator, and a few others, and when I realized I was near the end of your reactions to movies I like, I was very bummed! I hope you guys keep going with more good movie reactions. Cheers!

I never really thought about it. I do know that I saw him at the premiere after party, but I just put it down to him being friends with Alexis, and Ally, because this was when How I met Your Mother was on, and they were friends.

Neil Patrick Harris- entirely possible, however every time I see that moment, my mind goes straight to Burly the Troll from The 10th Kingdom (the oldest of the three troll kids) with dirt and blood on him.

Guys the Comics novels go into the history of Book. And Zoe. Among other things. All of them are overseen by Joss and from episodes that didn't go into production.

Summer Glau trained intensely for three months before the cast gathered for those two fight scences. The grace she moves with adds agreat deal to the fight.

I love this movie, but I _hate_ Mr. Universe. He feels too much like a plot device brought in to help write them out of a corner they wrote themselves into. And giving him the same treatment as Wash and Book at the end was honestly insulting.

If you look into the graphic novels, they reveal that Zoe was pregnant when Wash died. And the novels also detail Book's backstory.

I have been told, (and please confirm for yourself if you feel the need) that both Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk were the two actors that knew right away that they would not be able to commit to returning to the potential continuation of multiple movies and that is why their characters were the ones that died. yes, the plan was to keep making a couple movies more if this movie did well in theaters. sadly, we did not get that. But Whedon were free to make Avengers, so that's a tiny comfort.

Book and Wash only died because they could not immediately commit to multiple films. Doesn't really make much sense, but it is what it is.

River with the axe and knife is the cover of my copy of the Limited edition Serenity blu-ray. although in a different pose.
@valaport10 ай бұрын
There is a very believable fan theory that River is a slayer that also happened to be a genius and was interfered with by the alliance. She is very much a perfect weapon, built to kill monsters. I completely buy into it, in part because Joss did make a suggestion that all his shows exist in the same universe.

For the movie, the relationship between Mal and Simon has slipped back towards more antagonism than understanding. I think it works though, because with both Book and Inara gone, Mal doesn't have anyone he can get advice from who isn't in his chain of command. Both Book and Inara were people he could talk stuff out with. Now things just fester...
