The wonderful thing about Objects in Space being the last episode in the series is that River was the only person on Serenity who did not board with the captain's approval. Jewel Staite does an outstanding job in her scene with Richard Brooks. Acting as if you are terrified is one of the hardest things for an actor to do. Happy, sad, angry...these are all emotional states which are easily faked. But fear and terror isn't something one can easily conjure up. This is why most of the horror film do a lot of quick cuts. It is because it is hard for actors to maintain that look of terror. But Jewel does an excellent job of selling the terror she feel when confronted with Brooks' Jubal. That whimper when he tells her to turn around and put her hands behind her back just breaks your heart.

@@OathofLight Yeah. If you ever get a chance read about Shelley Duvall on the set of _The Shining._ Stanley Kubrick, in order to get a good performance from her, treated her very poorly. It was very hard on her. The scene where she hits Jack with the baseball bat was filmed over 100 times with Kubrick giving her NO NOTES or direction. Although people complain about "lack of closure" (and yes, there was that) there was to some degree some closure in "Objects in Space" regarding River. "Request permission to come aboard" is an old Navy tradition (and even for non-navy ships, permission is still required, though it's not so formalized.) River never got that permission - she was smuggled on board and caused a lot of trouble for all concerned because of it. In this episode, even though she wasn't "cured" of what ailed her, there was a lot of coming to terms with her condition, and it was highly symbolic when she asked and was granted permission of the Captain to come aboard his ship. That's when River became part of the crew.

In the commentary of the series DVD, Joss Weiden says that he was at a convention and was expecting to walk out to a crowd cosplaying "Buffy" and "Angel" and instead found a crowd of people dressed as "Firefly" characters. That was the moment he knew the movie had to be made. Also on the last day of filming Alan Tudek (Wash) gave Weiden the button prop used in the episode "Out of Gas" and told him if he ever decided to continue just hit the button and they would all return.

@@Petrosman Book had actually been born Henry Evans. Raised in an abusive home, music served as his childhood solace. After running away, however, he fell into a life of crime - making a name for himself as a master thief. Evans remained a career criminal until an armed stand-off with a police officer led directly to him being recruited by The Independence movement. Over the next four years, he would hone his already considerable fighting skills even further. Soon after, Evans was chosen to be a long-term mole within The Alliance prior to the Unification War. It was then that he murdered the real Derrial Book with a garrotte and took the identity on as his own. His left eye was also surgically removed and replaced with a biorobotic camera and transmitter. It's unclear whether such a backstory was always planned for Book, but the detail ties with one of Firefly's most memorable quotes - when Book ominously described himself as "more or less intact". Signing up for The Alliance, he rose rapidly through the ranks and eventually became an officer. This was accomplished via his willingness to use brutal methods when interrogating captured enemies. That willingness impressed his superiors and was also teased in Firefly, courtesy of a vision of Book's past experienced by River Tam (Summer Glau). Ultimately, however, he steered a massive number of Alliance forces into ambushes. His actions caused over 4000 fatalities and led to the capture of 300 soldiers. He also brought about the destruction of some of The Alliance's biggest spaceships, including the I.A.V. Alexander. It was dubbed the "single greatest disaster in Alliance history" and led to Book being discharged without trial. He spent the next few years living on the streets. While eating a bowl of chicken soup at a shelter, however, he had an epiphany regarding his life and place in the world. The moment led him directly to the Southdown Abbey, where he officially became a Shepherd. After a decade, he left and became a traveling missionary.

10:33: "Why don't they just tell each other!?!" Excellent question. Some have noted that the relationships on the ship are formed from opposites. Wash is silly, talkative, meek, not action oriented; Zoe is stoic, terse, and probably the crew's most formidable fighter. Mal is the independent outlaw, going where the wind takes him and living a life of crime, but making as honest and honorable a go of that as he can; Inara is respectable and civilized, but her career is bound by regulations and schedules, and as Mal points out several times, isn't as honest as he aims for. Kaylee is in the midst of three of these opposites. She's a backwoods world mechanic, with little formal education or manners; Simon is well-educated and raised in the high society of the core worlds. Kaylee is grounded in the world of machines parts, River doesn't even see the same reality as anyone else most of the time. Inara is educated, poised, and glamorous, Kaylee is rough, tomboyish, and often covered in engine grease. Even Book and Jayne, the most moral and least moral of the crew, have an odd friendship. But there are similarities in those opposites that allowed these relationships to form. Wash isn't a warrior like Zoe, but when piloting Serenity, he's got a cool, calm efficiency not unlike Zoe, and both of them have snarky, witty senses of humor. Kaylee and Simon both know the feeling of taking something or someone broken and hurting and making them whole again. Kaylee and Inara. . . both have healthy sexualities, let us say. Kaylee and River both perceive the world in a way few others can understand. Book and Jayne are both conversant with violence, and become workout buddies. And Mal and Inara. Both of them are headstrong and independent, both choosing to live their lives their way, and anyone trying to to force them down a different path will move or BE moved. That, I think, is the biggest stumbling block to them admitting their feelings for each other: they know that they'd HAVE to give up some of their independence to the other, and they aren't prepared to take that step, much as they might want to. They're both scared of giving someone else influence over their actions, even if Mal's giving that influence to a woman he loves and who loves him, and Inara's giving that influence to a man she loves and who loves her. 14:39: "Heart of Gold" is one of my favorites, in part because the bad guy is SO despicable. What I think is his worst moment is getting the call that it's his baby. As you mentioned, he's taking it right in front of his wife, so she knows he's visiting the whorehouse. And then he says "the child is mine." Not "ours," "mine." His and his alone. Speaks volumes about Rance's relationship with his wife, which must be SPECTACULARLY unhealthy. Especially given how disgustingly misogynistic he is with every single other word that comes out of his mouth. Such a wonderfully hateable bad guy.

I worked at a local Fox affiliate when Firefly was on the air, and I loved the series. I was madder than you can imagine when Fox dropped the series the first time after two episodes just so they could put in a terrible reality show in Firefly's place. The loyal fans started taking out ads in newspapers, magazines and other publications to bring back the show, so Fox caved for a while. Fox then started placing Firefly in the worst possible time slots to intentionally tank the ratings so they could put "Joe Millionaire" on the air. "Joe Millionaire" was cheap to produce, no writers to pay, no special effects...etc. This same programming director that cancelled "Firefly" then went ahead and bought options for four more seasons of "Joe Millionaire" and the ratings for "Joe Millionaire" tanked in the second season, so they had to cancel it and were out all of that money. That same guy brought us the crap-fest that was "Temptation Island" which did so well in the first season it aired, but then tanked big time in the second season after he bought options for another 4 seasons of it. This guy was also responsible for killing other good shows, like "Family Guy," "Futurama" and a bunch of others so he could bring us more "reality" show crap. He didn't last much past the start of his second season in charge of programming. That guy really made Joss Whedon mad, because he cancelled another show or two by Whedon, so Joss Whedon decided to shoot the series finale of "Angel" and leave it as a major cliff-hanger.

I loved how in the TV Shows "Castle" and "The Rookie" that Nathan Fillion always brought in cast members from Firefly as guest stars. It was especially epic when Fillion dressed up as a "Space Cowboy", a.k.a. "Malcolm Reynolds", for a Halloween episode of Castle.

There was also the moment of "bliss" when she was watching Zoe and Wash. The same visual effect was used when Companions were with clients [Inara (on Persephone, Higgin's Moon) and Nandi (with Mal)]. At the end of the episode, River and Kaylee are sharing tales of Kaylee's 'first' (some time before Bester). Also, the bouncing ball used in the game of jacks was used as the model for the planetary body seen in the exterior shot of Act 1. Objectivism...

I don't know if anything in the series hit me as hard as Inara's breakdown after seeing Mal find happiness - even momentarily - with another woman. There's more to it than most people realize... after 10 years, Whedon finally told Morena Baccarin (Inara) what was going on with her character... Inara was dying. She had a fatal disease that was incurable, which is why she detached herself from anyone who she might care for or any ambitions she may have had and avoided emotional entanglements, specifically with Mal. That scene carries so much weight because she's not lamenting her decision, she was grieving over what she knew she could never have. I met someone at a Con who was a die-hard Firefly fan. He had seen the series and the movie countless times, but he refused to watch the last episode, 'Objects in Space'... he said he couldn't live in a world where there wasn't more Firefly and so, for him, there will always be some out there that he hasn't seen yet... meaning these characters still alive and are having adventures out in the 'verse.

Cassie, when you saw River hearing things that were not being said by the crew, that was her reading their minds and projecting it into something she was seeing (it is a narrative plot device so that the audience understands what she's hearing) The plot device is similar to the one we see Gollum using when he talks to himself and is looking in a reflecting pool of water.
