No. He said no to her. He said he was madly in love with his wife. He is talking about her when Saffron kicks him. You were just too busy bashing men to realize Saffron was playing everyone. Your whole, "This is getting rapey" after she drugs Mal shows how off your views are. How about instead of bashing men outloud when not meaning it and being shocked that anyone gets offended and just call it out when it's real. Saying I'm just joking after the fact is too late. You hurt your cause. There are way too many Jaynes out there for that. After watching this whole episode if you still think she was serious about washing his feet, you missed the whole episode. The rain stick didn't "make noise" because there was no sound but music which is why there was no dialog either. And Jayne said it sounds like rain earlier in the episode, but you missed it as you were too busy bashing men. I watched this reaction because it is one of my favorite Firefly episodes and no one sees the twist coming. But everyone else figures it out right away except for you. Her name is Zoe. You want to be a feminist, you might want to know the female chacter names by the 6th episode.

A little hard on Wash - he was looking for a graceful exit, to get out of the situation without hurting Safron's feelings - He's married to Zoe he wants to be faithful to her. I think Safron was a little exasperated about how hard she had to work to get Mal to sleep with her... (also she was under the stairs when Malcolm and Jayne were bartering for her - so she heard that conversation of Mal turning down a trade for her) -- In the end, Mal thought Inara kissed Safron, because he fights with Inara constantly, from his perspective its more likely that she'd kiss a girl (and numerous strangers) before she'd kiss him. It wasnt the typical male lesbian fascination. River's scene from this episode was cut for time (and also because it's uber-creepy) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZXMf6Shms16ps0 There are no spoilers in the clip... Also you missed Shepard's joke about the special hell...

I agree on Wash. Also it took some time for him to realize what was going on. Shee saffron at first made her intentions as she just wanted to look at the stars, and get some quiet from the engine. Wash was probly thinking, yup thats why I am a pilot. Not oh god shes hot. Then she started coming on to him. Also she was a plant from the very beginning... to steal the ship. So she is good at her job of seduction. And without too many spoilers we meet Saffron again.

You feel how you feel, obviously, and that's fine, but I'm not sure how you can blame Mal or Wash for their responses to Saffron trying to seduce them. In Mal's case, it was a very attractive woman, naked in front of him, giving enthusiastic *informed* consent (he wasn't misleading her into thinking they would actually be married). Even so, he initially resisted, because of her cultural beliefs / it might still be taking advantage, etc. She wore him down because she was (a) hot, and (b) very, *very* skilled at seduction. In Wash's case, he found what she was saying/doing compelling, but he never even seriously considered being unfaithful to his wife. There was no dramatic leaning in for a kiss before he caught himself. He *did* express frustration with not being able to take her up on her offer, but he very clearly stood by his marriage, and couldn't help but ramble on about how great Zoe was. Neither character is perfect -- no objection to what you said about Mal in other parts of the episode, especially his initial reaction to Saffron saying they were married -- but not their responses to Saffron's (professional) seduction techniques, IMO.

@@SoraMiyano Yeah, that part wasn't the best, I agree. Also, the "she could kill me easily" part wasn't great to include as part of the explanation; it shouldn't be the threat of physical violence that keeps you loyal! But, I'm willing to forgive his less than optimal ramblings, given how unexpected and stressful the situation was. But, I don't think "I wish I could, but I can't" is necessarily disloyal. If someone invites you to a party, but you say "I wish I could, but no" because you have a big test the next morning, that doesn't make you a bad/irresponsible student. It's just acknowledging that what the person is suggesting sounds like fun, but that there's something else that's more important. (Don't get me wrong, I doubt Zoe would appreciate being implicitly referred to as a burden in that moment, but it's not disloyal.) He also salvages things, IMO, when he fairly quickly shakes himself out of his initial panicky response, and starts talking about how great Zoe is, and how much he loves her, and you can see that any lustful response from him is totally gone pretty quickly. But, again, you're obviously free to disagree. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts!

@@SoraMiyano When the captain's newlywed wife starts trying to seduce you alone in your workplace, and the first officer is your wife, it is an HR nightmare. Saffron is used to weak willed victims who succumb in moments. From the moment that Serenity set down on the Triumph settlement, she was using Companion trained wiles to infiltrate the ship. She used every opportunity to sabotage the ship and crew. She knew how to hamstring the ship, she knew who to avoid. Wash was put in a no-win situation because he would not physically throw her off the bridge, because the Captain's wife would have the right to be there and Mal and Zoe would be the only ones who would be setting her boundaries. She is not yet crew, so he can't treat her the same. If a woman is trying to entice a married man, and he says that he cannot because he is a married man, it is not a cop-out. Notice that after Saffron booted him in the head, Zoe never had a direct scene with her for the remainder of the episode. If Wash had been piloting a different ship and never met Zoe, he would have been easier prey.

Wash said no. He was being polite, but he immediately moves to reopen the door so Saffron can leave, and he was definitely saying "no". 16:10 My understanding from the US is that a "feminazi" is someone who---although she might claim to be a feminist---actually just hates men and doesn't really care about equality or women's rights or anything like that. There are men who use it a synonym for feminist (in order to belittle actual feminists), but those men are awful.
@zenithquasar9623
@zenithquasar9623 3 жыл бұрын
But why can't he just say: I am not interested. He is clearly interested and resisting "temptation". Does every man have to be horny and uncontrolled about their sex desires all the time in media?! I am so over it! He says no and then gives his wife's ability to hurt him as a reason. So, would he do it if he thought he could get away with it? I think he should have just said he is in love with his wife and uninterested. I don't think it is entirely unrealistic to assume that some men are not always going to be walking around with uncontrollable urges! That gives men too little credit, and contributes to things like rape culture tbh.

@@zenithquasar9623 Yes, Wash was physically attracted to her, and it would be a better representation of men if a man other than Book were shown to be totally uninterested in her. But Wash is NOT “uncontrolled about [his] sex desires”. He *does* control himself. Also, I interpreted Wash’s answer as simply no-because-I’m-married. It’s only because Saffron knows he’s married and came on to him anyway that he felt the need to mention things like Zoë’s ability to hurt him; he’s looking for something that will convince Saffron since his being married didn’t stop _her._

Yes some do call people feminazis. Usually the less educated and incels. However most men in the US are not like that and are annoyed at these idiots because they give all men a bad name. Historically women had a long fight just to gain human rights let alone equal rights. Just in the last 60 years they have gain a lot but there is still a lot of work to do, My mom was the first woman to go through the Naval Shipyard apprentice program. One guy said she was taking the job from a man trying to feed his family. Her reply? "What do you think I'm doing!!!"

Or in my case people from my country are fucking around in other countries and now eeeeeverybody hates venezuelans. Not all of us are bad, but because of some we fall in the same category haha. Here misogyny is still the norm so my guard is always up no matter what. If after seeing me with my guard up a man stays, he knows it wasn't personal and it was more of a "trial". That's also not a great way to be, but it works lol

Saffron, is trained as a companion, they specialize in the art of seduction/pleasure. This show has a mix of western culture and eastern culture. Think of companions as modern geishas. The washing of the feet is actualy a very pleasant thing. If you look at all the nerve endings in the feet, rubbing various spots in the foot and ankle area hits many other parts of the human body. Loosening and bringing pleasure to those parts of the body. Its not a sexist thing, its science. I would gladly wash the feet of my wife.

@@SoraMiyano the issue is you think a man has the freedom to reject a woman the same way women can men. If I ask you out you have the ability to say virtually anything to me in response with little concern beyond me being angry. If I reject you however, I put myself in significant risk. A woman can walk away and spread rumors that I'm gay or tell people we slept together and I'm lacking in certain areas or just flat out tell people I sexually assaulted you. I have no defense from any of this as the stronger I deny the allegations the more guilty people assume I am. Second, society says there is never ever a reason for a man to put his hands on a woman, period. So I'm immediately in the wrong if I do that no matter the situation. As a man your only real option in rejecting a woman is to compliment her, tell her your very flattered and definitely would if only not for... then pray she doesn't attempt to character assassinate you. I'm not saying this is how you would respond if rejected or what you would think. But this is exactly how society as a whole views the situation and would respond. Two of those consequences have happened to me personally when I have turned down women's advances.

I'm an old white guy - but I am also a feminist. In the US we also have people who call feminists "feminazis" - some are conservatives who aren't too smart, who buy into religious Old Testament bullcrap, but some are just plain misogynist a-holes. This episode is pretty cringe-worthy at times. I think they were going with Saffron's "superpower" being Companion-level training in acting, seduction, manipulation, etc., acting the innocent while pushing everyone's buttons. The actress plays her very well, I think; we buy into the innocent act pretty easily at first - but her appearance to me isn't that of an innocent teenager, she looks a little too old for that, making her a grown woman capable of making her own decisions. She worked on Mal for quite a while before he "succumbed to her charms". She was rushed with Wash, who despite the way he said it (cringe) did turn her down - I think he was a bit flustered and not thinking too clearly, but he did say no. As for Inara, I think she'd figured out Saffron was trying to play her and was stringing her along. And yes, sometimes Mal is an idiot and can't get out of his own way. :) Jayne, meanwhile, is crude af - to him, almost everything is about money, including sex.

Do not be offended. Most of the developed world has stopped having babies. Your generation may be the last. Japan , China, , Russia, all of western Europe, and the United States and Canada has stopped having babies. Between 2030 - 2050 the world's population is going to crash, as all the old people , who are the largest group, dies off. The exceptions are India, South America and Africa, which are so poor, a large percentage of babies will die unless they develop very soon into at least the 2nd or 1st world. Boys and girls, young men and women are not even dating in Japan, and that trend is occurring all over the developed world. Look it up! What to do? What to do! This is FYI.
