I think some people don’t understand the significance of it. Jayne, after it finally sinks in he’s going to die, cared more about what the others would think of him than his life. It’s that what saved him in Mal’s eyes.

In an earlier episode, Simon asked "Why'd you come back", and Mal told him "You're part of my crew" in such a nonchalant manner. This episode showed that it wasnt nonchalant, it was a deadly serious declaration of protection to Simon and River.

Its a great scene. It shows Mals loyalty and sense of security for his crew and that hes more than ready to remove everyone who is a danger to them. Even if its one of them. But since he still is a good man,he shows mercy. And Jayne got a lesson here: Mess with my crew and Ill take you out of the picture. Im always amazed how much character dynamics Whedon was able to put in such few episodes. The shiniest show in the 'verse!

Note that Mal does not say to Jayne "Don't do it again" at the end. He knows this is not in Jaynes nature. Instead he says "Next time ... have the guts to do it to my face.". This means Mal not only knows Jayne's nature, but also respects Jayne by respecting Jayne's strength, and not repressing it. Repression is the root of resentment. Even in the face of betrayal, Mal wants Jayne to be better at being Jayne, and this shows the highest form of trust to a man.

Mal: "Mercy is the mark of a great man." (Shuts the outer airlock door.) Jayne: "Can I come in?" Mal: "I guess I'm just a good man." (Walks away, leaving Jayne in the airlock.)

I love how the recent Firefly novels (which are more like the season 2 we never got) often reference this moment. Also, I believe this is the moment that, despite Jayne quickly going back to being Jayne (for the most part), pushed him to be the first one to stand with Mal's plan in the movie, quoting Book: "If you can't do something smart, do something right."

Close to Sharpe saying: "They were mine. I chose them. They fought with me." when Hagman and Harris died.

*"You turn on any of my crew, you turn on me! Which is just a concept you can't seem to wrap your head around!"* I love it when Mal is witty and charming, but it's even better when he gets dead serious. Gorram it, I miss this show.

Mal doesn't like Simon and thinks of River as a burden. But he would kill Jayne for them, because they're part of his crew, and he is loyal to his crew and expects loyalty back.
@sonicalltheway81792 ай бұрын
Well, he does later warm up to them a tiny bit. Especially River.
@opus57702 ай бұрын
Also, and this has a bit less heart than what you said, Mal recognizes the necessity of a high quality doctor on board. The sister comes with him, nothing to be done about that. But they NEED a doctor, and are lucky to have one. Whether or not he likes Simon is of no consequence, the group is stronger because of him. And as of yet, River can be a hassle to deal with but has done nothing terribly dangerous. But beyond that, you're absolutely right. Being on the crew means loyalty from him and that he expects loyalty in return. One of the strongest leaders on any show, written perfectly.

@@Sigma0283 I kind of want to see a deleted scene where one of the crew find Jayne there and ask how he got stuck in the airlock with a walk talkie on the door, and see Jayne stumble through an explanation.

Jayne vs Jubal early/ the operative? also Jubal early vs operative? i think Jayne is kind of slept on. he's stronger and better fighter and shot than the caption or Zoey. Mal has it on brains and charisma and Zoey on ruthlessness by Jayne is the strongest fighter outside of river when she's berserk
@keithduvall8125 ай бұрын
I don't know about better fighter. Stronger yes but not that smart. Jane would not have lasted long with the operative from the movie.

Also, kinda funny you said "slept on" and mentioned Jubal, since Jayne was asleep through most of the time Early was on board.

@@keithduvall812 i disagree he's a better fighter than mal, mal is smarter when it comes to leading and coming up with plans. Jayne would get the chain of command and beat the operative with it lol
