Good observation on River's absence. River's only appearance in this episode was in a scene that got deleted (but is available online and on the DVD). She read Saffron's mind and called her a thief, but no one understood what she meant, and Saffron talked her way out of it by confessing to stealing something from the kitchen. Saffron says she didn't realize River saw her, and River quietly says she didn't (because she was talking about her trying to steal the ship, not food), but no one heard her (or didn't understand what she was trying to say). River also made some eye expressions towards the Captain to tip him off, but he didn't get it. River has trouble expressing herself clearly and speaks in riddles, which the others usually don't understand. River was also trolling Simon and the Shepherd during the scene about wanting to get married so everyone just thinks she was acting crazy, but that's actually just in line with her true character - she's always trolling Simon and Shepherd Book, both in the flashbacks as children last episode and throughout the show, though most people watching the show don't even seem to pick up on River's trolling, so it's understandable that the characters in the show don't.

Didn't watch Firefly when it first came out, so my introduction to Christina Hendricks (Saffron) was on a podcast called GeeksOn so many years ago. Her brother Aaron introduced her to the show and they talked about her role on Firefly - and I had never been so smitten before in my life. She's so well spoken and kind of a geek in her own right. Her interaction w/ Inara - gauging each others capabilities and intentions really had me believing there was some Companion training in her past. Such an interesting character to introduce to the Firefly universe. I feel so bad for Wash, he loves his wife and wasn't going to fall for Saffron's manipulations - even though his head wished otherwise. :P Jayne: "That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth." ( ONE of his best quotes )

I'd love to give that podcast a listen. I searched for it but couldn't find it. You say it's named "GeeksOn"? I wasn't able to find that title.

I love how every single male reactor falls for Saffron and never gets suspicious until Mal kisses her 😂
@othergrimm65922 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've noticed that, too. Almost every male reactor falls for her act, while most female reactors are immediately suspicious of her. There are exceptions, of course, but it's interesting to see.

It reminds me of how most female reactors of Buffy are taken in by scummy Parker, while male reactors tend to notice his BS right away. There are exceptions of course but it is interesting to see how most people can recognize con artists using sexual attraction as part of their scam when they are the same gender, but are tricked by it when they aren’t 😉

While it doesn’t need a disclaimer, unlike shows today Firefly (and Angel) like to experiment. There are scarier episodes, funny episodes, action packed episodes… maybe it’s because they had to fill 22 episodes a season there is much more variety compared to the 8-10 episode binge. The next episodes of Angel/Firefly do different things with its tone, characters, sets and it won’t always gel with everyone. You aren’t going to get another Mrs. Reynolds episode but it will be something else special in its own right. I feel like it’s the beauty of this show where it experiments and hits different notes like a song. I never get bored of this show on rewatches or reactions because of this.

You've hit upon one of the key things that makes Firefly so compelling: the writing and directing are so tight and clean that there really isn't a single word or action in the entire season that doesn't move the story forward or further develop a character--and often both at the same time. I've never seen another show that comes close to that level of discipline. Also, that ability to balance serious situations with humor will become increasingly evident later in the season.

I think Mal is just a typical dumb guy like most of us and didn't connect the dots that inara kissed him
@notoriouslybratty2 жыл бұрын
Written and directed by Joss Whedon. Too much to love from Inara pretending she didn’t kiss Mal, Wash talking about juggling geese, Jayne and Vera (or his rain stick), Book’s talk about the special level of hell, and the crew making fun of Mal and his new “wife”. Joss loves to find moments for as many characters to shine.

I didn't like this episode before now, but your reaction made me see it in a totally different way. I think it's a combination of the clips you focused on, and your perspective. Never thought I'd not dislike Saffron, or (some) of the ways the other crew treated her.
@margretrosenberg4202 жыл бұрын
No, Mal doesn't know that Inara kissed him; he's just totally oblivious. Mal and Inara have been so busy pretending there's nothing between them that Mal completely believes the act Inara has been putting on. I'm sure Inara knows how Mal feels about her, but Mal doesn't know how to interpret *genuine* signals from a woman. (And everyone else on board knows exactly how they feel about each other.) Also, in all fairness to Mal, he was unconscious when Inara ran into Saffron near her shuttle and Saffron tried to seduce her. And Mal was still dazed when he heard the story in the infirmary, so he probably has no way to know that if Inara had kissed Saffron she would never have made it to Mal; he presumably thinks Inara ran into Saffron just outside his own quarters. One of the reasons Mal keeps calling Inara a "whore" is that Mal is uncomfortable thinking of Inara with anyone other than himself, i.e. doing her job. And this discomfort about Inara's job leads him to put a good deal more significance on it than it truly has for Inara, so Mal tends to leap to the conclusion that he would find most painful. That way he'll never have to find out what she truly thinks of him and suffer the rejection that he's sure must follow. So Mal is invested in believing that Inara doesn't care for him and would certainly never have kissed him.

There's a deleted scene from this episode that would have addressed your question about river. Not catching on to saffron
22:35 Same with Julie Benz (Darla) for me. Each time I hear her voice I am thinking: "Danger! Danger! She's on something!" 27:34 I think the River-Saffron interaction should have happend in S2 at least. It would have been similar to River-Badger conversation (::sad crying for S2::)

Before you cry for S2, cry for the 8 episodes of S1 that never happened. (A typical Joss Whedon series of the time had 22 episodes per season. We only got 14 of Firefly.)

@@notoriouslybrattyRiver had to be kept out of sight because the mystery woman could easily sell her out for the reward. Saffron was a master of time management and deception. Every time that she 'ran off', she was sabotaging more ship systems under their noses. SPOILER ALERT: Also, the deleted scene with the pillow.

Aside from Zoe calling all crew to the bay, Simon and River had to keep their distance in order not to tempt fate that the stranger would tip off any bounty hunters or Alliance types that she had met them on the trip from the Triumph settlement. Simon meeting her was incidental as medic, Simon & River would be too revealing.
