Firefox OS - freedom for smartphones? Tristan Nitot at TEDxGeneva 2014

As French Open Web and free software advocate, Tristan shares his success story on common good in information society. He co-created Mozilla Europe (a non-profit organization) in 1998, when he was unemployed, launching Firefox in Europe to bring back competition in the browser space by competing with Microsoft. In July 2011, within Mozilla team he co-launched Firefox OS, a free-software operating system for smartphones that could bring the Web to the next billion people with unexpensive ($25) smartphones.

Its still in its early stage but this can make a serious impact and compete against Android. The major factor for the developers is the apps are web apps i.e the development process is 90% the same as web development which in simple terms means a large pool of developers already know how to write app for Firefox OS. I love what Mozilla is doing, they are doing smartphones like no other company has. I don't like the limitations of smartphones now, I may as well go back to flip phones. I really hope they make their goal. EVERYONE SHOULD SUPPORT THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does Firefox OS allow to create an app using the device it self? Like for instance Touchdevelop allows for development on the device itself, be it iPhone, android or WP. I believe Firefox OS has a place but it needs innovative development platforms like Touchdevelop.

As a developer the big question for me is how do you protect your copyrights? If the applications are javascript with html anyone can get your source code.

It is probably open source. The probably want the opposite of copyright, which is copyleft.

copyright isn't holding a secret... it is the ownership of an implementation. You don't "protect" it, you use it as a weapon against those who you believe to "steal" it.

it's sad that no one took it for real & most manufacturers like intex, gave it only 1 GHz single core uPs & 128 MB RAM .. like forced suicide.
