The Arcadia Crown Fire Engine in this film, has been on my families ranch since around 1990, it is still pretty much the way it was in this film and still runs drives and does what it needs to, such a small world!! Crown vin F-1174

Such a small world indeed, glad it's preserved. Glad I stumbled upon your comment and just as I was thinking to myself "wow, wonder where all the people and equipment are today?". Hope that beauty stays in good hands for generations to come and thanks again for sharing this!

I love the Crown Fire Coach. There are a few still in use but are becoming rare. Engine 51 (60) is at the LA County Fire Museum.

Some classic old time Southern California fire equipment in this movie. Ubiquitous Crown engines are shown alongside Macks and Whites. Some of the footage also shows LA County and LA City trucks. The wildfire appears to be the 1961 Baldwin Hills fire with units from both of those agencies. The water bomber is a CDF contract B-17 fire bomber conversion, and the helicopter is an LA City FD Bell 47G. All of this equipment is long gone, as are open trucks in general, riding on the back of trucks, and the iconic brass fire pole.

Thanks for the info! Was wondering exactly all that, I'm mostly surprised at the fact that you knew what department the Forrest fire agency was from.

Which Arcadia fire station was this? Where was the tower located? The 3 current stations all have been modernized since 1963.

Charles Cahill and Associates was a production company from sometime in the mid-1950's to 1985. They produced a range of films, from obvious school movies like this one, to scare movies for teenagers about driving, drinking, and drug use. They also made films of pretty questionable quality about street gangs and narcotics control for police departments. The were one of several companies that rode the juvenile delinquent and beginning driving eras of baby boomers. Once baby boomers had grown up and scare movies in general had lost their lustre, Charles Cahill and Associates apparently lost their markets as well. They made their last film in 1985.

Pardon my ignorance by why do they run the Engines/Pumpers with 3 men on the back but no one in the side jump seats? We Vancouver ran ^ man pumps it was 2 up from, 2 in the jump seats, 2 on the back. Often the guys on the back would climb up and share the jump seat area if they had a long run

Hell we never had that problem! 4 assigned but usually ran with three

The riding on the back step has been outlawed in the states. Most departments run 2 in the cab and 2 in the jump seats. Some larger departments (FDNY) have 5 or 6 on each engine.

Gotta love tradition, our bid spots and engine assignments are still called the "back step" even though it's been 40 years + since anyone has actually rode on the back step of the truck.

Why, if jump seats were on the truck did they still ride the back step? 100 years of tradition unimpeded by progress!

5:47 helmets worn back to front. You cannot do that with today's modern Galifret helmets but at least they have heat reflective visors. That early 85ft HPV is a nice but of kit. We got our Simon Snorkel 65ft in the late 60's. It wasn't very reliable at all. The booms and hydraulics were OK but the Bedford engine and drive train were very poor. I was taught there were only three main causes of fire...men....women....and children. The human element can be found in almost 100% of incidents.

The firefighters in the film are not actually wearing “gas masks”. They are wearing what’s known as Self Contained Breathing Apparatus..(SCBA). Contrary to popular belief it is not filled with 100% Oxygen. It is filled with breathing air with 19-21% Oxygen, just the same as the regular air we breathe in the environment. Putting a tank on your back with 100% Oxygen would be like having a bomb or flame thrower on your back. Although Oxygen doesn’t burn it does facilitates combustion and will make anything that’s already burning burn faster, harder and can explode. Lessons learned in the Apollo 1 where the loss of 3 astronauts died after an Oxygen filled space capsule caught fire made authorities to re-evaluate the use of Oxygen in proximity to fire.

Could you image any city having the firemen riding on the back. People would be freaking out. Cars would be hitting them and yes they would fall off.

Justin Case LA City FD stopped having the guys ride on the back of the Engine, around late 60’s. One guy got it...hit/trapped his legs by a vehicle, nearly killed him. That was the end of having the guys ride on the back of the engine.

every periscopefilm has a buzzing his sound, because they transferred from video tape and not the original films, then periscopefilm seems to not know how to correct the sound his background noise , periscope film is an embarrassment on that level , but they are still proud of their library collection they share.

Nope, you are dead wrong and don't know what you are talking about. All our content comes directly from film transfers to HD and, in the case of KZbin, H264. There is no videotape involved. The audio is processed digitally directly from the original source, typically a 16mm film optical track.

Kudos for the video content! Excuse me for butting in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you researched - Rozardner Lucky Interview Reality (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a good one off guide for firefighter interview tips minus the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my work buddy finally got great results with it.
