Books about homeschooling: Dumbing Us Down by John Taylor Gatto. Any of his books will help calm your fears. He was Teacher of the Year in New York City and New York State, teaching for many years and seeing what it was all about.

it's easy, once you figure your system out. what works for some may not work for others. you can tailor your curriculum to each child. this is why public and private schools fail. they have archaic models for one size fits all. find groups to join, churches, libraries, 4H, martial arts, Facebook groups, there are many of us. zoos and museums are great as well.

You know what I'm gonna be honest. I am bitter as hell about this whole thing. I homeschooled my kids before it was cool. I'm black and not rich but I got married and had all my kid's from one man and we both decided when I was pregnant with my first child that I would stay home and homeschool our kids. Maaannn I got ridicule so bad from my family and "friends". NOONE was doing that, barely anyone was even married. My counties homeschool office was a one room trailer behind the school board 🤣. If it wasn't for old school Dr. Laura radio show i wouldn't have made it. I'm partly joking about being bitter. It's just hilarious that this is normal now.

Yes!!! You have paved the way, we aren't the same color skin but everything else is so similar. Yes, the things people would say, right? Like they had the right to make commentary...they weren't doing the work and they weren't supporting us! Homeschool mom of 15 years here. My oldest recently graduated with his associates degree (with honors) at the age of 17. Ivy League ACT score. Homeschooled Kindergarten through graduation. And now going for his Bachelor's Degree in gov't and law. (As long as money isn't an issue. Thankfully, his college doesn't accept gov't loans. Or even scholarships that other kids with his high scores would get.) Homeschooling can be done...and done well. Please don't believe the lie that it needs to be left to the "professionals". With the resources available today, brick and mortar schools are SO outdated. You CAN homeschool!

Teaching is Artisanal, rather than Industrial. If Public School were serious about raising the general literacy, they'd teach all students to teach, that Future Children could be literate when they arrive. The college you mention sounds like Hillsdale.

Keep considering it! That is one thing I have noticed about homeschool kids, they are articulate,and they know how to hold a meaningful conversation with a person of ANY AGE. I just started homeschooling my kiddo this year after watching my cousin do it with her 3 years for the past 9 years! One of her kids is a published author by the age of 15!

Highly recommend, I was Homeschooled ans I was able to graduate with my Bachelor of Science at 19 with no debt thanks to PSEO. You can basically test out of high school and get years of college paid for. I'm now homeschooling my own kids, it's wonderful!

One thing I notice about the young people on the sofa: when they aren't talking, they are listening attentively to the person who is speaking. That is not something I see all the time from young people today - these kids have learned to pay attention with respect.

I dropped out of my high school senior year because of corruption in the staff. I did home school to get my diploma and I swear I learned more on my own than at school. School was social, home school I was able to focus on learning.

I was homeschooled for 5 years and then decided I wanted to try out a public high school. I did really well for the first semester and just kinda started going downhill from there. After my second year I decided to go back to homeschooling and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. When it’s too much it’s too much. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Very thankful that my parents let me choose either way.

"How do you ever socialize?" was the constant question I got growing up a homeschooler. How ironic now. So grateful to my parents for their commitment to 12 years of at-home education (and a priceless parent-child bond!), my brothers who became my best friends, and all the friends (of all ages) met through co-ops, church, and community ed projects! My mom always said she thought God had a sense of humor because she wasn't trained to be a teacher AT ALL, and I echo that now here in Taiwan where I teach English. Homeschooling may not be the solution for everyone -- but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

LOL It truly is funny how the homeschool narrative has drastically changed over the past year. For years, homeschoolers were labeled as non-socialized weirdo's, who would be left far behind the public school kids, even though test scores proved that narrative false. LOL Homeschoolers were considered to be child abusers. Now, we are being called "hero's". LOL Oh, how times have changed. Different story when the shoe's on the other foot. All it took was Covid lockdowns. LOL I guess, better late than never.

I got that all time too 😂 funny because homeschooling allowed me to pursue my passions and still have plenty of healthy socialization. I was in dance, Martial Arts, tons of volunteer projects, church groups, summer camp programs, Co-ops we got out of the barn 😂 I have 5 siblings, we had lots of fun together and we're still close in adulthood, so many of my public school friends don't have those sorts of sibling bonds and I find it sad

The way we socialize in today's society is that most of the time we are just in our phones. Happens everywhere in public schools. At least when you're at home you socialize with family.

I've met many, some of my cousins kids are home schooled. Most do fine, some do not, just like kids in public schools. Some home schooling parents are true helicopter parents. Their kids don't do well in any school situation. It's all about the teachers, some parents are terrible teachers, just look around.

My childs developmental specialists (Doctors) have all been amazed at my daughters progress in her struggling areas in such a short time. They have gone from homeschool skeptical to extremely happy with her progress. Never would have gotten her caught up in public school.

@@jerryw6699 Every bunch has a few rotten apples. However, most kids that have been homeschooled are very mature and advanced in academics. Test scores have proven it for many years now. You can't just base it off of the very few you have personally known. Maybe, it is a family problem in your case. You did say it was your cousins.

Homeschooling is hard. I have 4 sons and they’re full of energy and some days it feels like too much…BUT I don’t ever regret homeschooling them and we have so many incredible moments together. I have had moments where I was close to putting them into school, but I keep coming back to the many reasons why I homeschool and I can never do it. The pros truly do outweigh the cons and the hard work is truly all worth it. Investing in your kids is one of the best things you can do ❤️

Same here. It’s a roller coaster ride but the many pros outweigh any possible cons. Homeschooling 3 currently pulled them out two years ago and a new baby on the way. It’s a worthwhile sacrifice.

@@run4cmt Unfortunately, you are correct. Recent studies are coming out that the medications given to these kids has had permanent side effects in their growth. I have a child with ADHD that I homeschool. You simply have to teach them coping skills, like with any other handicap in life. I have watched her dramatically mature over the years.

Canadian schools are not as broken as our American ones, but home schooling is still most often a better option. Avoiding masks all day is an added benefit.

When my husband and I decided in 2000 that we would homeschool our children, we had no idea how important that decision would turn out to be. We are in our final year (our youngest is a senior). No regrets. It was hard at times, but it would have been harder had we not built our strong family ties. 10/10 highly recommend. Would do it all again. PS The opportunities and curriculum options available now are so incredible. I'm a little jealous. 😉 Don't be afraid.

My husband and I both work full time, traditional 8 to 5, Monday to Friday jobs. We started homeschooling our two young elementary children this year. My husband goes to the office to work and I work from home. During the day the children have math and reading online and we do Science, History, Bible and LA once a week in the evenings or on the weekend. The beauty of homeschool is that it is flexible and you can do what works for you and your child. I want to encourage anyone on the fence to just jump and homeschool - where there's a will, there's a way!

The difference is that since the parents are the parents - no one can intervene when they indoctrinate the kids unless they teach the kids illegal activity. But, in a sense, every parent teaches their kids the way they would want them to be just like a school. It really is no different. I have friends who are not even Christian who homeschool. People forget that everybody that homeschools is not Christian or even religious. Some parents homeschool to specifically keep their kids away from anything to do with religion because of their own views.

Live local! If you have children in a public indoctrination center, pull them out. At the very least it deprives the school of the funding for your student. Home schooling isn't easy, but it's very worth it. Children tend to be better behaved and family relationships tend to be closer.

We pulled our kids this year and we were happy that they’ll be losing their funding. But, so many kids have been pulled that the government said they’d still pay the schools the same amount to help offset the declining enrollment. So it didn’t really work.

@@MP-ef9yo I'm so sorry your homeschool experience was so evil. It makes me want to cry. We know there is evil in EVERY walk of life. Even in churches/religious institutions. I can assure you this is not the norm. Also, it's very abnormal for a child to be "schooled" strictly by parents. Today's homeschool parents are more like facilitators of education. We have unofficial IEPs for each student. That includes: co-ops, live classes, online classes, dual enrollment, private tutors; we've even studied in Uganda, Africa. We've had discussions with NASA scientists. Served in local gov't with retired military. The world is our classroom. Then add your community sports and activities, 4-H programs (my daughter was even the president for two years), homeschool organizations like speech & debate travel teams, drama teams, etc. etc. Your "A." example absolutely happens amongst homeschoolers. But it's not looked at as an "assignment in school". Discussion is highly encouraged. Our children just don't have to stop when the bell rings after 50 minutes. And it's not limited to peers and teachers.

I am homeschooling my grandsons. My daughter, their mother, is the principal. Once kids have learned to read and are reading to learn homeschooling gets easier. My job is essentially to hold them accountable. Occasionally they are scolded for being off task but there is a point where they become self motivated. Now when I arrive even if I am late they have already started their work. When they get confused about something they will seek my help. I wish I had been homeschooled and I wish I had homeschooled my kids. While I got a good education academically I was bullied and miserable. My grandsons and I are close. They have friends through church and activities.

I've been homeschooling for 4 years and have spent $200 on it. The amount of resources available today makes it very affordable. I expect to spend more as my children grow older and have more specific interests, however I feel confident that I can still be frugal.

@Candace Tarbat...I use online materials, the library and physical materials. You can get homeschool items secondhand. I found a lot of great stuff at yard sales. This is great for the basics like math, reading and handwriting. I got 7 box sets of Hooked on Phonics and Hooked on Math for $70. That was my highest ticket item.

As a Brazilian, I'm really impressed with this argument around 4:00. It's very sound. Here in Brazil, there are different regions with multiple degrees of development. The more developed are those states that accepted individual liberty as a fundamental principle for life.

I am the oldest of five children homeschooled from kindergarten through high school. I wouldn’t have changed a single thing about it. Now I’m a homeschooling mother. When I was growing up we would get strange looks when we told people we were homeschooled. Now, when I tell people that I homeschool, I am applauded. Just started homeschooling my girls and I LOVE IT!! We are about 10 days in and my 5th grader is almost done with her entire year of math. I expect her to finish the 5th grade curriculum next week and then on to pre algebra, geometry, etc. We are working on foundations of chemistry and flying through Spanish. My 4th grader is also kicking ass. 100% on all of her spelling and math assessments so far, also learning Spanish. Both girls are learning piano and doing vocal lessons (with me) and we are studying US government structure and early US history. We did a science lab on aerodynamics today, magnetics yesterday and propulsion next week. Homeschool is awesome. I love the conversations we are having and it is amazing to see them flourish from the 1 on 1 attention and from being allowed to move forward without restriction and with full support. If you are on the fence, TRY IT!!

Homeschooling mom here, mom can do home based business. Also schooling can be done in far less hours than traditional school takes. Math and budgeting can happen at a trip to the grocery store. PULL YOUR KIDS FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

I have a small grandson that I babysit. If my health holds, I hope to be able to homeschool him in a few years. The school district he is in is not terrible, comparatively speaking, but they still teach that feel-good, everyone-gets-a-trophy BS. My daughter's friend was home schooled. It only took about 3 hours per day to finish all of her classwork, and when she went on to college, she was consistently at the top of her class.

I did a co-op-like style of homeschooling starting in eighth grade after going to public school. I went to school a different churches that would allow the program to have school there. I went two times a week. I had teachers, my core classes, and a couple of electives. Other weekdays I did my assignments at home like homework. Since we only met two times a week my teachers would make the most our time in class. I learned so much and really enjoyed it! My parents were more involved with helping my younger brother, but I did everything at home on my own. My mom could review curriculum. We had to order our own books, but she didn’t have to make any, teach lessons, or give assignments. We read all kinds of classic books which the public high school in my area does not do.

After I got kicked out of school for a reason that wasn't my fault (which, in my opinion, isn't too hard these days), my mom opted to homeschool me and my younger sister. I only had a few more years of school left. But, my sister was able to take advantage of it from junior high to high school. Technically, I'm still homeschooling in that I took up computers and have been studying them from home ever since.

I didn’t know much about homeschooling when my children were young. I think this subject deserves more awareness, especially in lower income neighborhoods. If people were given the tools, the knowledge and direction to do so, more children would be fortunate enough to be homeschooled.

@@LynnRPerry I agree with your statement, however back when my kids where young (mid 90’s) there weren’t many resources that I was aware of and I also had to work full time. There’s a lot more awareness and ease in getting that information and I’m glad for that.

The school board meeting I attended last month was a horrifying eye opener....they did not bother hiding their dismissive eye rolling. Very unprofessional and very alarming. I'm homeschooling my kindergartener this year as soon as I find work that's remote.

Meanwhile you could consider Homeschool at night and on weekends. Leave her with a babysitter who will do minimum school things. Read certain books or write one letter. Kindergarten is learning to follow directions, to identify letters, colors and numbers, to count, to learn months days and years. These are intentional everyday conversations between mom and child as they help make dinner, set the table, and go to the grocery store. You can do it,

@@traceymap totally agree with what you wrote. I work full time 8-4:30pm. My oldest son who is 18 in college doing remote college stays with her. At my lunch I come home and teach her also weekends we learn one on one. In between I make everything a lesson verbally. For now this is a start all I know is that she wasn’t going to have a mask on for eight hours. I’m in NJ and day by day it’s getting worst. People think I’ve lost it nope they did by giving their kids to the government! She is the youngest of my four kids the first three I didn’t homeschool however, things got so much worst!

A mother's presence in the home is priceless! Children naturally need and want their mothers, but society's message to us is that children will do fine with hired caregivers. Society has undermined the value of a wife and mother in the home and convinced many that her time and effort are best used in the pursuit of a paycheck or worldly accolades. In reality, young mothers will find no shortage of ways to use their time, talents, and energy to provide a loving home and quality education for their children. The truth is, when a woman works full time, her husband and children end up getting the 'leftovers' that she has to offer; the majority of her best waking hours are devoted to the job. One by one, moms can make a difference for themselves and their families as they assess the true cost of 'having it all,' reject that lying paradigm, and come home for themselves and their families. Your children's childhoods are fleeting; treasure that time and give it your best!

I nannied for a lady who felt the same way! I am so happy for her that she doesn’t have a nanny anymore and she just started going back into work only in the hours her children are gone. And they switched their children to Christian school this year! I encourage you to encourage others who have this desire!!

I openly say this. Always have. My career IS my kids and husband. My children are 21,15, and 14. Just moved to Texas from Missouri. I've been with my husband since I was 13. (I'm 40 now). In my heart, I literally live for my kids and husband. Them being great makes me great. My husband and kids having their needs met makes me fulfilled. Even from a teenage perspective I've always wanted to be a stay at home mom and wife. My life is setting their lives up for success. Their wins are mine. Their struggles are mine. Now starting homeschooling because of CRT. I wish i would've known earlier but sadly I take my responsibility and I simply didn't pay attention earlier. Now there's NO way I'll EVER send them back. I'm struggling starting, trying to get out of the school box I keep going into but ill press on because no way I'll allow them to receive funding for my children for making them hate the country I'll eagerly fight for.

I’m so glad to live in Idaho. I don’t take it for granted though, I look through my kids curriculum anyway (not in public school either) to make sure. Just to give you an idea of where we are, they still say “under God” in our kid’s pledge of allegiance. I’m one of the lucky ones but I know these activists are sneaky and persistent

22:00. I experienced this actual thing, about 25 years ago. Myself and 5 girls from the office went out to lunch. One of the girls, who was about 20, said exactly what this girl said. All of us, including me, reacted with genuine shock that she would say such a thing. (I've since become more enlightened. There's absolutely nothing impressive about making a plan to make it big in the world of corporate lawyers).

I was almost 30 when an older woman thought she should sit me down and explain how detrimental my choice to be a stay at home mom would be for me. In terms of my financial security at this point in my life we could say she was right...but during this crazy turbulent time when so many people my age are heart broken their kids don't hold the same values....mine do and they frequently thank me...not just for choosing them over a career but for homeschooling them as well. We are each others strength and support as we make decisions for our lives that are going against the norm. I'm so grateful for them...and for the choices and sacrifices I made to get us all here.

I was ridiculed and told it was a pipe dream to want to be a stay-at-home wife and mom when I was 17 working as a cashier at a local grocery store, lol. The 65-year-old woman told me that I would never find a man who would want me to stay home and that we couldn’t make it on one income.Here I am thirteen years later, married to the most wonderful man, with three kids so far, living the dream! It’s not always easy, but it’s always an adventure, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I'm homeschooling all of my kids!! With God's help! I just decide what my kids should learn and teach that. With ACE's (Accelerated Christian Education) help. I felt like a failure everyday but I just kept going, we've learned to shop at second hand stores. We eat inexpensively ,we don't go out to dinner. Every single thing we have done is worth it! We have our children and they are much more educated and mature than public school children. Just do it!!!

I was Homeschooled along with my 5 siblings. My oldest brother got his Doctorate degree at 23 and has his own clinic, my sister got her Master's degree from Mayo at 21, she made Captain in the Army at 24, I had my Bachelor of Science at 19, my younger brother was an electrician at 17 and is currently pursuing a double major in electrical engineering and computer science, the other 2 are still kids. Homeschooling is amazing. I quit my job in order to homeschool my own kids. If you can do it, DO IT!

‘Relative’ is dependent on the world experience and self-induced knowledge of the listener. The less the experience and self-sought knowledge, the smaller the mind, the less the relevance. After dragging along always a year ahead in public school i felt my only option was to drop out in the middle of the first semester of 10th grade, studied, took the GED test after 3 months and passed 88th in the state that year. Then lied about my age to a private college and entered university at 16 years old. Today i have my Masters in Theoretical and Radiation Physics, had my career and now have my dream…a sheep farm which allows me to read, study Scripture and work 16 hours per day, at 60 i hope to have a 20 year sheep farm career before retiring.

I'm glad to hear these young people had good experiences with homeschool. I personally didn't. I was behind my public school peers in two subjects and on par with them in others. I found this out when I finally was able to attend public high school and I loved it and excelled in it. I attribute this to my sub-par education at home, regarding both the curriculum and the environment. Not everyone is cut out to be a homeschool teacher and not every child will thrive in that environment. Take my anecdotal story for what it's worth; I'm not sharing it to discourage anyone from trying it. Just understand that it's not an automatic recipe for success.

I’m 1 of 14 children, and my mom homeschooled 7 of us. I was one of the children she homeschooled. She is a public school teacher and as a teacher she didn’t like the system and where it has been going in the last 20 years. I’m personally very grateful for her choice to homeschool me. Side note: we’re not Mormon or Catholic. 😂

Third year of Homeschooling my children. It’s been AMAZING! My daughters have been able to pursue their talents and gifts. We are able to go at our pace. Both are 1 year ahead in their strong classes. Math and Language Arts. It’s true that they have exceptional social skills with all ages. And they are SOLID in their morals and values. Highly self motivated young ladies and hard working. We are very social in our community and sports. This is very important to be stable and balanced. We go to church every Sunday and we do scripture reading every night before bed and we have excellent discussions. We are a very close knit family and we avoid the media and TV. All of my dreams have come true with my children. I have zero complaints 😊

We homeschooled our kids, K-12, and they were both raised in California. They both went to college; UCLA and UC Berkeley. They are now liberal and one has decide to no longer communicate with our conservative family. Be forewarned!

I'm so sorry to hear that and I appreciate the warning. My heart goes out to you, and I know some of your pain since I have one child who took this same sort of path (happened after going to a secular university). I think Dennis is right that sending Conservative kids to college is like playing Russian roulette with their morals. Some will end up stronger for it in the end, but most will become a part of the system. The system is just too massive and powerful, it is too attractive and too easy for most people. We will be sacrificing a lot but we plan to send our other kids to colleges that are inline with our morals. Don't lose heart and "keep the light on" for them as the other commenter mentioned. Also stay close to your spouse during this difficult time, and find renewed purpose and joy in your shared values and partnership in life. God bless

I homeschooled my four kids in the 80s-90s. We lived in Upstate New York which was/is super strict with parents, but I liked the accountability. Because I’m a certified teacher and child psych grad, they weren’t as hard on me. A local newspaper did an article on our family and put my contact info. We started a homeschool co-op of 30 kids. Homeschoolers came out of the woodwork. I taught my kids from K-12 and we didn’t have computers! We lived below our means, homesteaded, and made it work. Dr. Raymond Moore’s books made me a believer in giving my kids freedom to learn at their own pace, follow their passions, etc. Also Dr. Ruth Beechick helped me simplify on many levels. Their books are still available. Today my kids are between 34-40 and can think for themselves, have awesome passions, are married and have college degrees, some advanced. Anyone reading this, please don’t put a career or dream house before your kids. They do grow up and you can have a career later on. The culture is so bizarre and many online schools and jobs available.
