For those pissed about the end, it was made to be realistic. Occam's razor, the simplist explanation is usually the truth. The game wanted to play on your paranoia and expectations of grandeur, only to have the conspiracies end in some man trying to get deal with something that doesn't really involve you. So many games treat you as if you're the center of the universe, and this game wanted to show you that things in life aren't always elaborate events.

@TheTruth-xp2of
@TheTruth-xp2of 7 жыл бұрын
If this is a stereotypical ending, please name a few games with a similar ending. The stereotypical game ending involves you saving the world, beating a bad guy, a friend or ally probably dying on the way, you possibly getting in a relationship or having sex with a fanservice loaded female character.
@watcherob
@watcherob 7 жыл бұрын
This is not stereotypical. It's mundane as is the rest of the game. That's the point. As the OP states you get paranoid about what the hell is going on and in the end it's nothing special. That makes this game different from any other game and I love it for it. You are just a firewatch dude with too much time on your hands. Also as soon as you hear more and more about the goodwins you know it's them, I only hoped it would be the kid and not the dad, that would make the end even better. Some nerd kid messing with your head that would have been awesome.

(spoilers) (also long) You know, I went into this game thinking there was going to be some sort of weird twist.. how pretty early on the game makes it clear something is off. You find out you're being monitored so on and so forth, find a camp full of high tech equipment and are made to believe that there is something possibly of a social experiment going on. All of these "conspiracies" are laid out in the open pretty clearly to make you think there's something bigger at play. What I don't understand is how the game sets up all of these troupes with the fenced off area, and all of that equipment with obvious government "research" at play to wind back the story to just be about some guy's kid that died in a cave and he can't coop with it. Not to mention how obvious romantic tension builds between the main character and D just to have her recluse and just leave. Now, I didn't open all the supply caches, I didn't find any secrets worth noting, and I didn't explore or cut through all of the blocked path ways. So maybe it's a completion-ist type thing that triggers different endings or story telling but somehow I don't feel like that is going to matter. I feel like the Devs didn't want it to be some sort of over the top weird ending and just kind of played it back as more of a reminder of how shit life turns out to be a lot of the time... I guess I can understand why they did that, because a story that is normal and turns into something of a government social experiment type twist is becoming a cliche if you think about it.. But I couldn't help but wish it DID just turn out to be something along those lines because the current ending we have is just straight unsatisfying I don't believe the game is shit, or has poor story telling, because it is neither of those. The atmosphere and the dialogue were all very well done and pretty gripping and i actually was pretty interested in what was happening next. I guess I just wish the ending wasn't so depressing, but again I suppose I can understand why they did it.

+RazorCamel There's a few more negative things worth noting about the game. Considering this is a video about another ending I'm going to assume nobody cares about being spoiled on certain parts of the game. For sake of being on the safe side I'm just going to tag this [SPOILERS] 1) It is pretty difficult to believe Ned moved all of the hardware, put up a tent, and then built a fence all in one area without anyone figuring it out. Not to mention how costly doing so would be. Granted, Ned became a hermit and would have quite the disposable income from all of his savings thus far. However that is some very high grade equipment and most likely wouldn' have been available to the public. 2) Inside of Ned's tent we see multiple beds (I believe three). Why would he have so many beds if it was only him? The short answer is just that it's a red herring to try to divert the player from connecting any dots. I doubt it's for the illusion to make it seem like it's multiple people and honestly Ned doesn't seem like the type to go through the trouble to do it. Ned built the fence and security station purely for the purpose to monitor what Delilah and Two Forks say to each other to see if they're onto him. It's hidden by all of the tree so neither of them could see the towers he built up. So why would he go through the trouble of adding extra beds with his line of logic that no one will search there? 3) Brian is stated multiple times to be a pre-teen, and evidence shows he was in sixth grade due to his homework. So why is it that he looks like a young adult when you find his body? He's either the lankiest yet build kid on the playground or was held back multiple years. 4) It's clear that the teens from the beginning cut the communication line, but how? They have no way of climbing up to the wire, they most likely cannot throw something up to the wire and cut it that way, and there is no way for them to bring the wire down to them. I'd say the wire would have to be around 15-20 feet in the air, which is too high for them to get to. There is the possibility it was Ned, who has a track record for doing the impossible thus far, so why not give this one to him, too? Because it's highly unlikely that he did it, and there is no evidence pinning him as the one who did it. Those are the only things I can think of off of the top of my head. To add on, I also believe the ending is a let-down and it's a disappointment that the devs don't allow for you to change the ending. You are able to either build a relationship or close friendship with Delilah, but neither play out. I don't see any real significance to this. It makes it appear to be some sort of writing maneuver that by making the ending more disappointing it reflects real life. However it apparently never crossed anyone's mind this is a story-driven decision-making game and there may have to be more than one ending. It feels more lazy and as if the writer wanted to wrap up the project or spent more time on the bulk of the game and put little to no thought into the ending aside from Ned's tape.
@Jonoz376
@Jonoz376 8 жыл бұрын
+TheGamerzOfTheUSAAll [more spoilers] That high tech equipment and the fence and everything weren't set up by Ned. It was set up by some researchers and Ned was just using it to track H and D. I would also say the wire was definitely cut by Ned too in an attempt to stop them from reaching anyone else. While I thought the pacing for the game was a bit off I was satisfied with the ending. It wasn't some big dumb conspiracy but instead something simpler and much more grounded in reality which was one of the main themes of the game.
@DaveLewis41
@DaveLewis41 8 жыл бұрын
+TheGamerzOfTheUSA To answer your first two questions, Ned did not make that camp. That was a preexisting camp that was set up by the research team mentioned in the note left at the Scout Camp. Ned has a piece of paper in his cave stating that he must clean out the camp and make sure that there are no traces of him ever using it before August 10th, which the note says is the day that the research team will come back. All of this info is in the papers scattered around Ned's cave. He was using the research team's equipment to monitor the Watcher's radios while the research team was away.
@xenovendeta
@xenovendeta 8 жыл бұрын
+Jonoz376 A few things. In the camp Henry clearly says they had info on his wife he never told Delilah about. So how did Ned get that information? He couldn't have. Ned was a recluse that got by, by stealing supplies from the watch and campers. Secondly in his "bunker" the notes by his lookout says the keys to the cave where stolen. Also if he was trying to hide the fact his son was dead why would he have left the keys for Henry? The game was a good game with a horrible ending. Had there not been some things to leave plot holes like the information about his wife and stolen keys turning up for Henry to find then yea, the ending while disappointing would have been more believable.

I don't know why people are disappointed. It's a simple and realistic end. The ending represents what Hank was running away from. He ran to get away. A summer place. A place where he could forget his problems. But dreams fade and eventually you have to go back. Summer only lasts so long. While he may not face Julia again, it's a perfect ending of common summer tropes. You're here for a moment and gone the next. That's summer in this game. A pause in the hallway of time. Back to reality we come....

Intentional or not, a disappointing ending still sours a story. Wouldn't you feel cheated then?

anyone that thinks this game had a shitty ending, are empty husks with no soul inside. the ending was beautiful, and if you paid attention, found all the papers and Ned's lookout. everything gets answered pretty much. people find the ending shitty, because they expected, crazy monsters or government conspiracies. but while the whole story is about getting away from life. trying to escape, but always being dragged back by reality one way or another. both D and henry were broken human beings dealing with life in general. looking for a pause. some time away from it all, the same as Ned. 3 years out in the wilds. no worry ahead. until you get dragged back to reality (getting found out by 2 fire watchers for instance) the whole setting, the whole story of this game. its something every human being should be able to relate to, so why people don't like this ending is beyond me. the must like living in a fantasy, the reality is that the ending of this game was perfect.
@keirmartin2830

+Lodewijk Vrije It's because the game builds up to something but doesn't deliver. The ending is predictable and Ned's story just doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in practice. If they didn't bait the player into thinking there was some grand conspiracy then it would've worked a lot better. Also, we learn nothing of interest about any of the characters. Henry's back story is abandoned and explored in no more detail and we literally learn nothing about D except that she may have a minor drinking problem. It doesn't work for me as a mystery or as a character study. Sure, there are some parallels between Henry's life and Ned's but it doesn't explore it enough. The writing is great but the narrative fails to say anything meaningful. I enjoyed my time with the game but the ending was just incredibly underwhelming to me. Not to say that you can't enjoy it though. I'm glad you did. I loved everything up to the ending and it's just a real shame as it'll be the thing that I remember most.
@LodewijkVrije
@LodewijkVrije 8 жыл бұрын
+Keir Martin "If they didn't bait the player into thinking there was some grand conspiracy" when did that happen? the only thing that happens is that you find a research camp that belongs to the government. you yourself started believing that its was some grand conspiracy. the game does not lead you to that conclusion AT all. so you just because you find a piece of paper that says all equipment belongs to the government. make you think its a conspiracy? when i walked into that camp saw the tracking equipment and remembered the deer i had found with one of those tracking devices on it. it became pretty clear that someone was just stealing shit from the government camp site. you say the came lead you to believe there was some grand conspiracy, but i don't think we played the same game then. because conspiracy hasn't been on my mind once while playing this game. and if people had payed attention to the game they were playing then it would be on their minds either. henry's back story is abandoned? yeah. thats kinda the point of the whole game, a break from reality a pause of his shitty life. in which he loves a demented woman. we dont really learn anything about D. well again thats the point. after 70 days in the wilderness, its weird how your only point of contact is someone you never saw and know nothing about. yet you do feel like you know her to some extent. the game builds up to nothing? no the game drags your ass back to reality where it belongs.
@keirmartin2830
@keirmartin2830 8 жыл бұрын
+Lodewijk Vrije The game doesn't lead you to a conclusion of conspiracy at all? Not only the government equipment but the profile's written about the two leads? Come on man, sure the game explains that there's no conspiracy but to say that the game at no point leads you into thinking there's something deeper going on is just ridiculous. The narrative is constantly baiting the character with things like H's sleepwalk radio chatter and his panic later on that he may be the one with dementia but those ideas are dropped as quickly as they come up. It's there for no reason other than to entice the player into thinking there's something else going on. The fact of the matter though is that the actual reveal isn't based anywhere in reality either. The two leads actions make no sense, Ned's plan makes no sense and he is literally there for the sake of a plot device. He is a deus-ex machina in every sense of the word. Like I said, there is a somewhat interesting parallel between Henry and Ned but it's not explored well enough to be shoehorned into the plot. If the game wanted to make a point about making a break from reality, it could have in a much more grounded way. The whole mystery aspect of the plot (interesting before the finale) could have been removed to make that point ever much more real. Furthermore, how is there a point to them not learning anything about each other? It's unrealistic for a game that's supposedly grounded in reality. The game had a really good opportunity to make a poignant message in regards to running away from your issues but it does nothing with it. Struggling with a family member or spouse with alzheimer's is a real issue and could have been explored in a mature and interesting way but the plot is literally "H leaves wife + Deus ex machina = H returns to wife". The way the plot unfolds really doesn't support the idea that Henry must return to reality. He could literally fuck off and get another job somewhere else which makes a thousand times more sense in the context of this narrative because he doesn't grow at all as a person. Henry isn't a character I can relate to because he doesn't reflect at all in the game except for when it's to set up a stupid bait.

***** yes i do know what it means, the point im making is, that as soon as you get the idea the government might be behind it. or some haywire research team. that gets immediately dismissed by the documents you literally find 100m further down the path. you open the gate, and get the letter from the inbox. this is the point where you start to think the government might be involved. yet 100meter down the path is all the evidence you need to figure out its a bunch of researcher tracking deer..... and that someone must be stealing stuff from that research camp.

+Lodewijk Vrije No actually, that makes no sense at all. Though I liked the way the game just lead you on and snapped reality with the most mundane anti-climactic endings, it was surprisingly cool. Man, I picked this game up after seeing a gameplay video of the first ~10 minutes (after the intro text of course) and I didn't know ANYTHING about it beyond what I saw in those 10 minutes. I just like the characters, graphics, dialogue. I did not even expect the mystery elements at all. So when I found the typewriter in front of the watchtower I got really excited about the game. To be honest that made me expect so much more of this game. [Spoiler ahead:] So I just finished the game in one session and I loved it, but I wish the conclusion would've had more to it than just a heartbroken dad, who won't leave the place that his son died at. Other than that the game was near perfect.

+Josh Go Actually, it was VERY well-done. The entire build-up and suspense was intentional, just as the "let down" at the end was. The story is about people running from their problems and trying to escape reality, and the end is reality catching up to them. Admittedly, it's very "artsy", but it's also very realistic compared to what I guess people were expecting.

+Thedoubt There were so many great climactic possibilities there but instead...they just ended it with a sort of "Well, that's life" message. No kidding, I'm fully aware that life can suck, hence the use of video games like this to escape it. It's really ashame that so many are hailing this as "deep" and "insightful" when in reality, if this were the narrative of any novel in a bookstore, it wouldn't sell 1000 copies. The story was building and building and building, only to end with no payoff.

They could have gone in a different direction with this game, like there's another lookout you talk to as well, so you don't know if D or the other one is lying or if they are working together against you. but the more i think about it the more I like the way they did it. the whole backstory with Dave and ron is just sad, it seams the whole bottomline of the game is about facing your deamons and moving on.. like Henry is running from his life with everything that happened to his wife, D is probably running from something. Ned is running away from facing the death of his son. the Ron and Dave side of the story is about Dave being gay and in love with Ron but Ron doesn't understand it, so dave is running from that. there's the old cabin that (probably) dave lived in, and in the outhouse we find the lyrics to "Ol shoshone" which is on a tape as well, in the cabin there is a broken guitar which I think the song was recorded on. the house is burnt as well which makes one think that after Dave found out that Ron was going to alaska with Debbie he got drunk he burned the house down and left. funny thing about the whole game is that the Ron/dave story is more interesting than that of Henry and Delilah...

Unpopular opinion incoming: I like the idea of adding this alternate ending. It suggests that Henry wants to die. His wife is irreversibly ill, he went through a lot of bad shit in the forest, saw a dead kid and finally the only hope for him left him behind with no immediate plans of meeting him... It gives us a chance to succumb to his suffering.

I'm gonna throw a wild theory out there just for fun. Delilah and Ned were in contact the entire time....thing about the start of the game where D takes a call and says "no he doesn't know" she had to have been talking about Henry to either Ned (which is the obvious choice) or possibly Simmons from the site (less likely and about to be explained). Delilah could see Henry no matter where he was yet she somehow didn't know about Wapiti even though it was in her field of view and she could see you when you're in the site....she has to be hiding something from Henry. Also why does she lie about the missing girls....sure she says she doesn't want to deal with cops but nobody would lie about something so serious knowing they could lose their job over it.

You know, I really think this ending makes more sense. If you really analyze the game, you can see that Delilah lied through almost the entire game. She never wanted to get together. She knew Ned was out there. She was trying to protect him - protect him from Bryan, who she thought was at home. it's obvious she cared a lot about Bryan. And so Ned tricked her. He made her think that Bryan went home, and he used his PTSD as an excuse and he begged her to let him stay out in the forest. So she let him, to protect Bryan. The whole game, all she does is try to prevent you from meeting him. After she finds out Bryan died however, she then realized that Ned tricked her even worse than she was tricking Henry. She then used Bryan dying as an excuse to not meet up. She said she had some stuff to do at home first. More than likely, she was still together with her boyfriend. Once Henry realizes this, he changes his mind. He does not want to go home to Julia. He just wants it all to be done. I don't blame him. I wouldn't have gone home to Julia either.

I'm not mad at the fact that there is no conspiracy plot involved but not having an alternate ending based on how you talked to Delilah is inexcusable. "This is like real life". Well, In real life your words matter. A lot. That's just bullshit. This is a game based on decisions and they took away the most important path. It's like making a platform game without jumps for whatever reason.

Plot Twist: Delilah was actually Julia. It says that Julia had alzhemers. In the end, Delilahis talking to Henry, and then in her final words, she calls Henry, Hank. If this was just a mess up in diologue, that would be fine, but a bit disappointing. Delilah also avoided seeing Henry, ever. Just a littlr theory here, but would be cool if these game brought out a DLC that confirmed this. :)

I don't understand why people dislike the ending so much. If Henry met Delilah and lived happily ever after, that's not realistic. The ending was exactly what it should have been. He took the job to get away from the past, all with Julie and everything, and that's what he got. Then he goes home and lives normally again. That's as realistic as it could get.

The ending, why Delilah recluses towards Henry. it's because she has a boyfriend outside of the watch, it's revealed after Henry goes to Wapiti Station and she kinda stutters/gets defensive about it. Most likely, she's coming to terms with the fact that Brian died and she could've reported it, she's finally got to leave, and she actually has a boyfriend and has been leading Henry on the whole time. If you look at it from this perspective, it makes a whooole lot more sense why she says, "Go back to Julia." Because SHE is just going back to her boyfriend. So disappointing, but a lot of small little details in the conversations like this

That’s exactly what the ending is. And, given the circumstances of the fire, his death would most likely be by carbon monoxide inhalation, which is a fairly peaceful way to go. I like to imagine that after the helicopter flies away, Henry goes back up in the tower, scribbles down some sort of note for whoever, and leaves in somewhere where it won’t burn with his wedding ring sitting on top of it. Then, he grabs the bottle of whiskey from his pack, sits in the tower and eventually falls asleep. Dying peacefully and having his body reduced to ash.
