Wonder if we ever met. We should swap Instagram info. I'm bobbybdroback1502. I used to manage Emerald City with Jake W. 1996-2001. Dann, Jake & his brothers, Kelly/owner of EC and and the gang would surf officer's beach/fence line and get so shacked. The El' nino of 97/98 was better than the one we just had in my opinion. Later brother, stoked if turns out we know one another. 🤙🌊

@TRIKushbeachside5 жыл бұрын
That looks like a nice model fo sho but I’m not to sure about the fresh vs salt water not making a difference. While a board would plane the same it would not occur at the same speed, you would HAVE to be going faster in fresh water to have the same amount of float/lift compared to if you were in salt water. Salt water is more buoyant and denser so you would not need to be going as fast to have the same amount of lift.

When I started surfing back in the 80s we never thought about all the technology that goes into making and designing a surfboard. I wanted a light board but these boards today are like surfing on a potato chip(read that description someplace) they're so thin. I see some of these guys like Jamie O'Brien break a board and back in the house and grab another board. I would be so bummed if I dinged my board. But we are talking 2 different budgets! Lol 🏄🏼♂️🌴🤙

anyone know what FRK stands for?
@firewiresurfboards3 жыл бұрын
It originally stood for 'Flipped Rocker Kelly" because Dan Mann designed two versions of it, one with a flatter rocker, and one that was more 'flipped' (meaning it had more curve). The one Kelly enjoyed more was the 'Flipped Rocker' version with more rocker. Months later we were looking at it and realized that FRK looked like it spelled 'Freak", which Kelly of course is talent - wise. So today, it stands for 'Freak'.

LAME... both these guys (Kelly Slater and Dan Mann) are sell-out kooks an they know it. They have their boards made by women and children in overseas sweat shops for $135 and sell them to sheeple for $775. What about all the people who made Kelly's boards since 1989 that made his career possible? Kelly's a millionaire 20 times over but the American craftsmen who made his career possible still need to eat an pay rent. FireWire goes overseas for profits... to leverage lax labor and environmental regulations... don't be fooled by their "greenwashing" epoxy bulls**t. Kelly Slater and Dan Mann: support your home or lose it. And if you kooks (that includes you Mark Price) wanna talk "green" BS do your production in the USA with proper OSHA and EPA standards. Nothing good about this Paul Carter, just sell-out corporate kooks destroying the planet and lying to people for profit.

If history has taught us anything when it comes to surfboards and Kelly Slater… most people can’t ride what he rides. Seems like if it works for him the average surfer will never be able get 100% out of it. Just think of how his CI boards from the mid 90’s almost single handedly killed surfing for normal humans. But if you surf like Slater, I bet you’ll love this board!
@firewiresurfboards2 жыл бұрын
The FRK is very different from Kelly's boards with C.I. Dan Mann hid a lot of volume through the center of the shape, and it paddles / planes uncommonly well for such a thin railed design. The rocker in the FRK is also far more relaxed than Kelly's earlier shapes with Al in the 90's. Its more functional for the common surfer than you'd expect, specifically in waves with a bit of push stomach high or bigger.

"Which means 12 feet for some of you". Stop the silliness, the front of the wave is all that matters. Going by the "Hawaii" standard of measuring height, a 25 foot day at Teahupo'o is 2 feet. That having been said....nice video and chat.
@petermyers4795 жыл бұрын
The existence of wave ranches is influencing board design. Seems evident here. They’ve designed a machine that rides waves beautifully. What they may be losing though is performance in paddling and other not riding activity. I hope my sentence makes sense. I’m not being critical, just making an observation. Wave ranches will be the future of wave riding competition. Interesting.
@Xainfinen5 жыл бұрын
You're right, but they're not forgetting that most of the surf is in open ocean and paddling is an important part of it. Having perfect waves on a dial give them more option through technologie with so much data coming from the studies of water displacement & motion tracking they can fine tune surfboards a little more above the curve like CNC did a few years ago. That's why we have performance shortboards that can suit beginner/intermediate level surfer and help them improve because of the better volume & surface distribution that steamed from CNC surfboard shaping. It's the best of both world, computer precision and man craftsmanship.
@radiokaput2 жыл бұрын
I thought the same. With that rocker and as they recommend to use it as low volume as possible, this board is suit for good waves in a not crowded break. At least for an average joe like me. But its outline really looks sweet and balanced and I love watching Kelly surfing this type of rockered board like he used to 20-30 years ago

i haven’t understood why there aren’t more surfers who ride just as good switch as regular. The pros in every other sport go pretty much the same either way.
