For Video with fixed audio select the following link: • 1968 -12-12 Firing Lin...
I kept this video due to the many responses in the comment section, and for those who wish to continue their current correspondence.
Saturday August 06,2016: I have added the video again with the audio in sync. I encourage viewers to download a copy from KZbin themselves as I am concerned about videos being removed that should be in the "Public Domain" for educational purposes.
The Audio is a bit out of sync. I may upload another video in the near future to rectify the technical issue. Nonetheless, the intention of this video is for historical preservation.(stated prior to another version of the video being uploaded)
"Taped on 12/12/1968. When Cassius Clay joined the Black Muslims, his draft board reversed its earlier determination (made in order to keep him out of the Armed Forces so that he could continue to box) that he was not sufficiently intelligent to serve. When he was reclassified, he pleaded conscientious objection, was refused, and at the time of this program, was about to begin a term in jail".-Amazon.com

I'm a 68 yr old white man and I have no problem at all saying this man was my hero, and always will be. I pray God is rewarding him for all the good deeds he has done, all the children who had a chance in life because of him, and the opportunities he gave to black people and all races, and underdogs all over the world. All the while, knowing he should have retired years before he did, but he sacrificed his well being and kept boxing so he could continue to travel the world and continue to help people of all races who were less fortunate in life. Most people remember his boxing skills and loud mouth, but he wanted to be known for what he did for others. He was the greatest!!

Can't help noticing the civility between both men. One speaks, the other listens. Commentators today need to go back and watch these old interviews and take note of method of interviewing. The point of it all is hat both speakers recognize that they have an inhouse tv audience as well as a national tv audience to communicate with. These two speakers are following the communications protocols. No constant interruptions or talking over each other. Very interesting discussion.

As a Muhammad Ali fan I have never seen this 1968 Buckley interview so thanks for uploading. He was about 26 at the time of this interview. Despite having a poor education in childhood and as a teenager one can see Ali intentions are to better himself as a man, help fight racism, not participate in adjust wars and be an ambassador for black equality - becoming a Muslim allowed him to do this with sincerity and conviction.

+Yew Wood Did you know that a Black man invented the main event performed at all rodeos for the last 100 years? Cowboy Bill Pickett invented the stunt called bulldogging (steer wrestling). In fact, he invented the word, too.Usually riding his favorite horse, Spradley, Pickett would chase down a steer released into a pen, jump off his horse and wrestle the animal to the ground. His trademark move was to bite the steer on the lip or nostril to subdue it quickly. No one had ever tried the stunt - with or without biting - before.Pickett was born in Taylor, Texas in 1870 to former slaves of Black and Native American heritage. By 12, he had quit school and was working odds jobs as a ranch hand and crop picker. Later, he joined his brothers in Oklahoma and started a “horse breaking” business. The Pickett boys entered rodeos to make extra money and that’s when Pickett introduced his bulldogging trick. Legend has it that Pickett got the idea from watching how cattle dogs on the plains would subdue the animals by biting it on the snout. So he tried it. Crowds were wowed by the improbable victory of man vs. beast. Pickett was a slight man, only 5-foot, 7-inches and the steers weighed between 800 and 1,000 pounds. Naturally, he lost a lot of teeth, too.Image from Wikipedia But his stunt was a hit and soon the 101 Ranch in Oklahoma signed him up for their Wild West Rodeo Show. Pickett moved his wife and nine children to live on the ranch and he toured with the show for 20 years. The “Dusty Demon” thrilled city slickers in New York’s Madison Square Garden, Canada, Mexico and Europe. He even performed his stunts for the British royal family (Queen Elizabeth’s grandparents).Pickett died in 1932 at age 62. He came out of retirement to help the 101 Ranch when it was struggling financially during the Depression. Perhaps slowed by age, Pickett was knocked down and kicked in the head by a horse he was roping and died of his injuries.The most widespread and egregious re-writing of American history took place with the myths of how the Old West was won. Missing is the truth about the thousands of African Americans who settled the frontier. They were trappers, scouts, homesteaders, cowboys, peace officers, cavalrymen and gunfighters. You won’t find stories about them in the dime novels or the old Western movies, but thousands of Black cowboys lived and worked in the West. And Bill Pickett was the best of the best.Like all the other African-American cowboys, Pickett never received the fame he was entitled to. Often he had to claim to be Indian because some rodeos wouldn’t allow Blacks to compete. And Western-movie cowboy stars Tom Mix and Will Rogers - who made millions in Hollywood - were Pickett’s assistants. (Pickett did star in two short silent films, now in the Library of Congress).

amazing, I've watched a few of these william f buckley jr debates on you tube (if for no other reason than to marvel at his waspish affectations) but you soon realise just how dumbed down most mainstream media news and debate show's really are these days. The problem's worse in the US than the UK I think, but on the whole the same can be said for mainstream media on both sides of the atlantic.

+izbavynasotlukavago he was, but if you didn't know that he's the very essence of what I imagine a wasp to look/sound like. There are 2 trains of thought where the term wasp is concerned, one is white anglo saxon protestant, the other is a more loose interpretation of the term. You must admit he has east coast old money oozing from every orifice ?

+Jaesen Tamele (GunsGodNGadsden) Uh? My point was that todays news seems nothing more than a series of dumbed down press releases interspersed with shleb tittle tattle. There are no independent mainstream news sources. That's all. I don't quite know where your 'racist' tangent sprang from. If that's what you read between the lines of what I said then you're much mistaken. It happens that william f buckley, I've since learned was catholic, so strictly speaking can't have been a wasp, but he has adopted every waspish affectation with mastery.

+Ross Rossiter He publicly made no qualms about his faith defining him except for Humanae Vitae, artificial birth control, on which point of doctrine he was a dissenter. And so by necessity he was among those in the modern Church who say that one no longer has to accept every de fide article of faith. Those two issues made him Protestant-like, and i understand the point you're making and his target audience. Yes, Catholics kept a pretty close eye on him.

+Jenean McBrearty Yes. Specifically he was an Irish-American Catholic (he actually studied in Mexico City's UNAM for his bachelor's!)... I don't agree with Buckley all the time but here he hollows out the ideology of the Black Muslims' "honorable" leader Elijah Muhammad. Ali was duped into buying into that scam. It's a shame since he was obviously bright.

@RCR I was thinking what would Cassius Clay's career and longevity have been, without his religion. I think you couldn't have separated one from the other, and had the success he had. The other reason I replied to you is; that he was loved by so many, because he loved so many, no matter what colour they were, and no matter what the NOI instructed him to propagandise. May The Lord keep him.

This was buckley's main job; doing it for years. He went to Universities and did a lot of training and many many interviews to be good at it. He was always prepared with selected questions for his interviews. Ali has not go through the same EDUCATION SYSTEM buckley did. Buckley also being a republican made it his objective to make Ali look bad. Here is a little info on buckley's background: was an American public intellectual and conservative author[2] and commentator. In 1955 Buckley founded National Review, a magazine that stimulated the conservative movement in the late-20th century United States. For an entire generation, he was the preeminent voice of American conservatism and its first great ecumenical figure."[8] Buckley's primary contribution to politics was a fusion of traditionalist conservatism and classical liberalism; it laid the groundwork for the rightward shift in the Republican Party exemplified by Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. There is a lot more. This is the kind of intellect Ali confronted day in day out in the 60s and 70s even the 80s. And he kicked ass
@roughhabit9085
@roughhabit9085 3 жыл бұрын
Well at least you googled him I suppose. Most morons in the comments section can’t even be bothered doing that . Ali didn’t encounter another intellect like this on TV because nobody did . Buckley was clearly the most literate and articulate person that was ever on American Television on a regular basis . This was not his main gig . He had about five careers not the least being the driving force behind the political movement he founded.

Education-> Educe -> to coax or to draw out, as in, some desired behavior. Prussian educational model was adopted in US. It is what US public schools are based on. It was devised in Prussia not to foster critical thinking but compliance. Prussian soldiers had disobeyed commanding officers in battle. In response, the educational model originated there, to train the next generation so they would obey their orders better. Public education in the US is a horrid business.

Buckley is a white, privileged, erudite conservative. He approaches the discussion from his ivory tower context. He appeared unprepared to lead a meaningful, issue focused discussion ("will you pay your debt?")... Ali, without any formal education, intuitvely and correctly sizes up the social tapestry of his time, and walks into the lion's den to take on all conservative comers. It is easy to overlook minor "inaccuracies"; is was remarkable to to watch a great champion try to educate those who were already indoctrinated and believed they already knew better.

Well said Christopher you may be interested to know that Buckley, has many documented links to the cia and fbi(an informer according to Wikipedia ). Other scholarly people suggest he was a paid operative to promote right wing thinking.His father was also cia . When he interviews Chomsky (articulate left winger ) Buckley resorts to threatening to punch him in the mouth ,which is pretty curious stuff . And here Buckley does his best to undermine Ali .truly I think Buckley is a disgrace . The book pied piper for the establishment reveals Buckley s motivations btw.

Muhammad Ali A REAL MAN!

I loved Ali, but he was blind folded by the Nation of Islam and his hero, Elijah Muhammad, who was conducting extramarital affairs with young Nation secretaries-which would constitute a serious violation of Nation teachings. After first discounting the rumors, Malcolm X came to believe them after he spoke with Muhammad's son Wallace and with the women making the accusations. Muhammad confirmed the rumors in 1963, attempting to justify his behavior by referring to precedents set by Biblical prophets. So how can Ali sit here at this interview saying that he believed in the sanctity of marriage etc?

He realised the teachings of Elijah Muhammad were wrong years after this, when Elijah died in 1975. That is one thing people forget to reference in this comment section, the fact that he converted to Sunni Islam in 1975. In doing that, Ali moved away from the radical teachings of the Nation of Islam and became closer to what Malcolm X saw in his realisation, towards the end of his life. Ali was intelligent, but impressionable, Malcolm X had realised the truth about Islam much, much sooner, if only Ali was convinced then, their friendship would still have been strong and Ali would have left the Nation of Islam sooner.

Thanks for posting this. I have never seen it nor knew that Ali had been on Buckley's show. I was always put off by Buckley's smug and superior body language which was somehow really pronounced in the context of Ali and the subject matter. I try to imagine a white conservative pundit today doing a similar program with a leader of Black Lives Matter, with an all white audience and more white journalists poised to ask questions. This fight goes to Ali on a decision.

note the subtle slights of a man who traffics in intellectualism but has trouble pronouncing "Mr. Uh-lee." "...Muuh..hammed.. elijah" instead of Elijah Muhamad. This, from a man who never stumbles on matters of academic and historical quotations. I am not a Muslim, but I think the difficulty in respecting different views in a pluralistic fashion is evident. Ravi Zacharias is one of the few today who can properly hold conversation with men of the caliber of Ali. The relevance is that he remains a patron saint of sort of conservatism. I'd categorize myself as such, but one who appreciates the engagement of alternate views while still standing on principle.

Even though Muhammad Ali left NOI a deviant cult you can not blame him for his views for the environment of the time he was living in and experiencing. The racial segregation and civil rights era gave African-Americans that view of White America. Muhammad Ali after-all became a Sunni Muslim later in life as Malcom X when he came back from Pilgrimage
@kidneymcsecrets8402
@kidneymcsecrets8402 8 жыл бұрын
@AZ Agreed! The US was still segregated, and would remain very much so, for quite some time. At the moment, due to recent and very frequent experience(s)with a few members of one or two local temples, I've concluded that NOI is now more than ever a gathering of embittered highly impressionable individuals who aid and abet the criminals and their unlawfulness, in the ghetto of their city, if not directly benefiting from those activities. But in the political climate and overt racism of 1967-68, I'd have to say recognition of their effectiveness in organising and self empowerment is evident. They were necessary to Muhammed Ali, and Muhammed Ali was necessary to many revolutionaries.

I love Buckley's tactic when Muhammad brings up Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the racist majority issue. He dodged that bullet, by firing a bunch of questions to veer away from the issue. I found it funny how Buckley completely disregards the long list of Arab nations and leaders that have support Ali as a "true Muslim" [he looks pissed during this part though], and fires back with Malcolm X. Though that has nothing to do with Ali's acknowledgement.
